Not really it doesnt. Again it’s about money. Smash brought in lots of money. GH would not. Evo hasn’t been about community in YEARS. It’s about making money and Smash has the largest total entrants year after year. It brings in lots of money.
There have been stories about Wiz for year and no one on Evo staff gave a single fuck till it had the chance to impact their money, then they fired him.

And to add to Radiant’s Rant:
Even if Evo was about the community, Money still mattered. Attendance still mattered.
As much as we all hated it, Smash brought people and it brought money.
Evo still has bills to pay, and Vegas is not a Cheap place to have a convention at.
The contractor fees alone would kill a smaller Tournament organization.

To add more to what radiant and darksakul says
There are many decent fighters that weren’t been in EVO compare to smash and the reason why smash is considered like everyone else mentioned is $$$ they had a huge entrance also. Take note that smash even outsell SF lately.
What you are pointing about guardian heroes and smash isn’t mutual.
like I said earlier
Is that Fighting Games is designed with different win conditioned and priority in gameplay mechanics. The single player conditioned and priority were designed differently. Then follows the multiplayer aspect,
And Beat em ups isn’t the origin of fighting games, because there had been tons of PVP and 1v1 games prior to the existence of beat em ups. Wrestling, Boxing, Karate Champ, Pong and etc.
Street Fighter had been existing before final fight, Street Fighter 2 only solidify redefine the genre by redefining the 1v1 multiplayer aspect to be more concrete than it’s predecessor.
fighting games had influence beat em up with special move like execution because of it’s sudden popularity and that was an attempt to salvage beat em up when it’s already a dying and stale genre, when fighting games are rising. It doesn’t mean they are mutual because of having those features.
Same thing with DND and Warzard isn’t a RPG even it offers branching paths, Level-up system and items inventory. Those were just simply gimmicks that still doesn’t blur the genre and priority of their design.
Pointing out the side scrolling and pvp option of beat em up is nitpicking because those weren’t the priority in design of player experience from the ground-up.
