How should TOs handle the Gem System? (READ THE OP, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BALANCE)

Then the gems will be like the CvS2 groove system, so it’s not like that will ruin the game. Also, I bet it wouldn’t take long for people to figure out the most optimized and broken combinations.

i’m not that interested in sfxt. i already have a game that I play regularly.

however I do want at least one of the modern games to be interesting and fun enough to play. Dismissing gems would really suck. They’re one of the parts of the game that seems actually different enough that I would care to spend some time on the game.

if it’s just going to be sf4 with fancier combos that sucks. I understand the time issue. But really then it’s more a logistics issue than a game issue. I guess it depends what Japan wants to do.

I’m ok with presets but all they have to add is a meter preset and sets with different gems in each of them for people to choose from.

So apparently button configs/gem sets can be transferred by USB. Didn’t I suggest that earlier*?

In any case, http://shoryuken.com/2012/02/14/sfxt-gem-setups-button-configurations-transferable-in-tournament-mode-through-usb-memory-device/
So this, combined with default gemsets, looks like we have a game, set match on our hands.

There’s still the issue of DLC, and the fact that this just complicates setup thanks to the fact that most consoles used in tournaments have only 2 or 3 USB ports.

Until we find the magic that is… THE USB HUB! I figure 2 hubs with 4 ports each or 1 with 8 should cover it. Unless I’m totally wrong this should be pretty cheap.

Then you introduce the risk of players complaining about input lag from the USB hubs. Whether or not they do is moot. The point is you want to simplify things and reduce the things people can complain about in tournaments.

If you just plug it in and out then it should be fine. Just a little more work. I imagine that you don’t actively need it plugged in; it’s just preset codes for the gems to activate on the console’s game save in tournament mode.

I brought this up in another thread, but the USB thing isn’t the quick fix some of y’all think it is. We’re still making a ton of concessions for this game, for better or worse.

I thought the consensus was banning DLC gems?

Also, unless DLC unlocks carry over on the USB, people aren’t likely to be able to use DLC gems in any case. If they do, however, most likely a major TO will post a gem set including that gem and defaults, then people could set up the selection alongside whatever agreed custom sets, put it on a USB, and use it as the tournament standard. I’m willing to bet that, even with the new USB configs, people will eventually use pre-set lists in tournaments. I can envisage USBs being used to make setup quicker rather than copying each individual player’s stuff over.

Wait, so you’d be willing to cave into people complaining about a non-existant issue? Or do USB hubs lag? If they don’t and someone complains I’d just tell them to stuff their dumb excuses where the sun don’t shine.

Trust me, it’s an issue.

Alright! I’m really just learning by reading at this point but exactly how is it a problem? Is getting that many hubs a problem? Do hubs lag? Would the people complaining have a valid point? What does this mean for the validity of 2 player teams?

The issue is that majority of folks will be ignorant and will complain about stuff like supposed input lag and will raise hell about it, even if there isn’t any lag. Try as we might, folks will still insist and complain. Anyone who’s gone around trying to stomp out tech related myths in Tech Talk would know.

Fighting game players are a very superstitious lot.

I quite like the idea of using the gem’s numbers to select them quickly.

  1. Select two characters
  2. Go to gem-loadout selection
  3. Instead of picking a preset option, press a button (square or whatever) to go to numerical input which looks like this: [000] - [000] - [000]. Each of the brackets represents a gem. You select one number at a time, changing it with up/down and switching between them with left/right.
  4. Put in the three numbers for your gems in the correct order (ie 022, 069, 105). Pressing X will pop up a window displaying which gems you’ve chosen (just their names, ie ‘[022: Immense Power lv. 2] - [069: Iron Defense lv. 1] - [105: Purple Shablagoo lv. whatever]’) so you can see if you’ve selected the right ones. Pressing X again will finalize your choice
  5. Voila, character is now equipped with those three gems.
  6. Do the same for your other character.
  7. Play.
With a bit of practice and memorization, this would not take more than thirty seconds. It would require that players remember the numbers for their gems, but you can always write it down somewhere if your memory sucks.

Your thoughts/comments?

That’s a terrible idea because then you’ll have hunders of someodd people in a tournament fumbling to input these numbers correct, get mad cus they fucked up, have to wait for them, and then matches taking longer than button checks to start up. The usb thing is technically a solution but then you’re asking for more logistical problems, like for example expecting people to not only buy usb drives but to NOT lose them, let alone when traveling, or get them confused with other ones, shit grinding to a halt cus person A can’t find his usb drive so he has to go to the menu to set it manually. It’s just not a very practical solution. Only solution is default gems ordon’t play sfxt.

I wanna pre-emptively say a very honesty thank you to all the TO’s that go through the trouble of organizing the tournaments so there can be a community. But right now, you just got handed an insanely raw deal. This may be the first fighting game that needs rules requiring USB cards. SMH.

Are they cowardly too?

But in all honesty what if there was an “evo” USB hub or list of USB hubs? Forget gems for a second, I wanna see 4 player mode take off (not super street bros, the other one).

Also on rules for gems, if a guy misplaced his USB drive isn’t thay his problem? Make him pick a default load out.

This is a good option to have, but I don’t see many tournaments making use of them. The logistics are complicated.
