How SF(Game) Influences Comic Experience

I love the comic. I love the posters. I love the figures. I even love the anime, despite the fact that the Alpha flicks weren’t all that great.

BUT…

I don’t know about anyone else here, but the fact that Capcom has given up on Streetfighter as a GAME has really started to make me less enthusiastic about the comic. I still buy every DVD, action figure, and every comic cover (including RAW editions and Power Foil) that is released, but I definately don’t look forward to it as much as I would have back in 2000 when I still had hope that new Streetfighter GAMES were going to be released. Every person I know who buys the comics at my shop does so because they love the game. But how much longer can fans be expected to support a line that no longer exists in it’s original state?

I know that 2D fighters are on the outs, but what is there to stop SF from branching out as a different kind of game? The only thing I’ve seen lately are re-releases (Alpha Anthology/Hyper Fighting) cheap cut and pastes (Fighting Evolution) and pale imitations. (SVC Chaos)

I still support everything Udon and other companies do with this property, but it just dawned on me that I no longer enjoy it as much as I used to. And that little bit of self reflection really sucks.

Anyone else get that feeling, or am I just battling Seasonal Depression?

But how much longer can fans be expected to support a line that no longer exists in it’s original state?

We don’t know. I hope as long as possible. There will come a time when even Udon stop making Street Fighter comics but I don’t want that time to come. But I am expecting once they completed their Street Fighter III run of stories, they will be thinking about finishing Street Fighter comics all together.

But we don’t know. Anything can happen.

Yea, it does feel pretty darn crappy. I found that a good dose of Final Fight Streetwise provides a little relief at least, though, but your mileage may vary and it’s likely only a temporary reprieve.

Final Fight Streetwise seems to be too mature. Not that I have a problem with mature games but I prefer my Street Fighter games (and by extension - the Final Fight games) to be set in the fantasy realm.

I just pretend that all the maturity is some massive overexhaggerated joke. Admittingly, this is likely because it’s so grossly overdone that it’s impossible to take seriously.

How can a god-awful game provide relief of any kind?

Because it’s funny and you get to punch Cammy in the face.

Cammy is in the game?

Yea. I’d think she was meant to be a surprise given how she hasn’t been mentioned in advertisings or the website at all, except she’s right there in the promotional comic and instruction booklet so I guess someone at Capcom Studio 8 just really likes Cammy or something.

I think she’s an optional boss (for lack of a quicker explanation).

I don’t really have a problem with it, nothing to be too upset about. I mean, the comic is the reason we have anything street fighter that’s up to date really. It’s keeping it fresh and alive by both retelling the story and giving us new insight on it, answering questions and just being and over-all exciting read. If the street fighter games have come to an end it makes me no difference, will have the comic until its finished its run which we know will be a good one. Most likely will have some more animated stuff in the works (which we hopefully be on par with the comic in terms of quality, the comic has set a standard in my opinion) so its all good. All things must end eventually, but HOW it ends, the story it tells during its run and the fullfillment it leaves is what’s most important. Atleast that’s how I see it.

Correction.
