Watch the next Street Fighter feature Mel as a tweaked Ken.
How about when u first play sf2, where were all the Sf1 characters? huh? not there? OMG capcom are idiots OMG!!!
SF3 sequels are kinda fucked in the ass because you have one bigass fanbase favoring the old and the other half favoring the new. I dunno which group’s bigger, but nevertheless Capcom has never been able to please both parties, resulting in… failure, pretty much. Hell, the probability of a SF sequel is damn slim anyway.
With that question answered, if they ever make a sequel to SF3, they should remake SF2, using elements from SF3/SFA3/whatever. I think this would have the best probability for success/pleasing the fanbase. Basically:
- More traditional fighting
- No parry
- No airblock
- Somewhat less emphasis on super bar
- SF2 characters having SF3 moves and techniques
- Return of ISMs, a la SFA3. For example, Ryu could have one ISM where he gets no super bar at all, but have a fully invincible DP, fireballs with good recovery, hurricane kicks that sail over projectiles, etc. Specials and normals do above-average damage, but Ryu himself takes more damage in this ISM. Another ISM could be like ST, with Ryu getting the Shinkuu Hadouken and Shin Shoryuken as supers. In this ISM Ryu’s DP would barely be able to punch through fireballs, and are really only fit for (deep) anti-air. Ryu however gets tools like his f+MP overhead, and his f+HP into 3408503945 links, among other things. You get the idea.
- Return of speed settings. Normal would be… normal. I guess. Turbo 1 would be ST Turbo 3, and Turbo 2 would be HF speed.
- 2D, cel-shaded, whatever medium of graphics, I don’t give a shit. 3D, they better come up with some innovative methods of keeping some of the old-school fighting there. Hell, 3D would have a lot of problems to deal with (how would cancels work? crossups? sidestepping? what moves would track? what about OTGs?) Cel-shaded a la Viewtiful Joe would be Capcom’s best bet.
- Some new characters. 3-6ish. None of the old characters would be replaced. Think SSF2 when it first came out.
- Old school tunes! None of that gay SFA remix crap.
- Some method of getting out of blockstun. Whether it be red parry or Alpha Counter or pushguard or whatever, I’m not sure.
- Bosses… ST style. You get either M. Bison or Akuma. Maybe another new boss to add into the fray?
- Supers… One bar only. Meter lasts from round to round. Super damage should be toned down from ST, IMO. Prolly around 25-30%. More emphasis should be put on the PROPERTIES of the supers (e.g. lots of supers sail through projectiles) Basically, supers should have specific uses. For example, Guile’s super could be changed so that it has the invincibility of a douchebag, but does hemma damage. Thus, Guile’s super is intended to be comboed.
I won’t be outlining changes in characters THEMSELVES. You’re in luck
OrangeCat wins the thread.
And Higher Jin needs to play some 3s.
It sounds like people want SFIII to devolve. Just play Anniversary if that’s what you really want. 3s is different, and if people would pick it up instead of whining that it wasn’t a clone of SFII, they would have been better off. Go play Tekken if you want a series stuck in stasis.
And it’s retarded to gripe about Ryu and Ken being in SFIII. Because of the game engine they play nothing like they did in previous games, so you’re seriously basically learning a new character, aside from the commands (which in Capcom games are usually shared between characters anyway).
GameSpy I would have to disagree with you on the T2 to T3 translation. Given they lost characters into translation for T3, they still had the Mishima’s, and the Mishima’s are basically the Ryu and Ken of Tekken, there’s really no arguement on that. I’ll be honest, SF ain’t going to be the same without Ryu, Ken, and Chun Li, I don’t mind them adding new characters, but I really think that Capcom should keep alot of the old characters, I agree with many people that the cast in SF3 where very weak when compared to ST, does this mean that I’m not giving the new cast a chance, no, they just aren’t as appealing, given not all are bad, but many of them just aren’t.
There will always be comparisons with the new gen. to the old gen., you can’t change that, that’s like saying that people don’t try and compare Kobe to Jordan (btw Jordan still owns Kobe for free) so if Capcom counted to 4 or even made another SF3 run off, then they should have the old with the new as well, that way you can satisfy both sides of the playing field.
LOL, the new characters over old ones in SF3 is classic Noritaka Funamizu. Read any of his interviews. The guy hates making sequels. You’ll usually here him say something like “but the players want another sequel, SIGH.” He’s the main reason there hasn’t been an SF4 all of this time. Having new characters is a way to make a sequel without making a sequel. That’s my personal take on it anyways.
Street Fighter II came about because Capcom USA asked him to make a sequel to SF1, and instead he made Final Fight, ha ha! Capcom USA said, “THAT’S NICE NOW MAKE SF2!!!” You can read about it in the SF Eternal Challenge Book. But LOL, SF2 threw away most of the cast of SF1, wasn’t until the Zero/Alpha series some of them came back.
Personally I’m glad Ryu, Ken, Gouki and Chun-Li where included in the SF3 series, it was nice to have some familiar faces especially since the new ones took a loooooooong time to grow on me, three whole games…
This is why Im glad I kept my copy of Alpha 3. I dont mind there beeing mostly charecters in 3, and I really do Like a few of them (Ibuki) but I just dont really care for the complete cut off from the 2 and Alpha casts.
regardless of personal feelings there’s not a damn thing I can do about it so Ill just enjoy each game for what it is.
One thing that bothers me though, were the hell is Sakura. She easily could have been encourarated into 3 and Id like to see the type of fighter she became.
Ryu’s sort of the official Street Fighter mascot so he’s alwyas gonna be there and Akuma is always looking for a challenge. Ken and Chun Li while I enjoy there presence didnt have to be there.
I think the 3s cast is awesome. I like all the new characters except Makoto who I think is kinda lame, otherwise I think everyone is pretty damn cool in their own way. Shoto clones are as lame as ever.
I mean Alex, Hugo, Elena, Q, and Dudley are like my 5 favorite fighting game characters ever, and they are all from the same game. I dunno, I just really like the style of 3s.
I liked the characters introduced in the game much more than the ones introduced in the Alpha series, all which I thought were lame as fuck.
Anyway I think 3d fighting games are killing off 2d regardless of how good the games are. 2d days are numbered  .
I also see that Higher-Jin is bringing the 3s hate as usual . Sorry you can’t rely on your brain dead fireball tactics anymore (jk).
3s got me back into fighting games again because there were so many great characters I wanted to learn how to play and because I thought the gameplay was nearly perfect. I find it surprising that so many people seem to hate the cast tho I think it is a strong point. Kinda ironic since its Ken and Chun Li are the ones that make me hate 3s sometimes.
The answer to the old school vs new school in SF is to kinda follow tekken.
What i mean is they should have both sets of charcaters 1st u have new Characters and when you complete the game with one of them you unlock someone old school related to them i.e you finish with sean u unlock ken, ryu you unlock sagat and so on.
As for storylines you can make those up as only one person story is the true ending anyway.
If they did that for 3s it would of apealed 2 many more old SF fans.
If they do make a SF4 they should do something like that 2 keep everyone happy.
Honestly, this was said a looooong time ago. Funamizu and Okamoto where still with Capcom, but now they are gone. Capcom of Japan had the rights to SF, now Capcom USA has the rights. Who nows what will happen for SF4 at this point, I don’t expect Capcom to stick with that old quote forever. But whatever they do, it would be nice to see SF4 in my lifetime…
IMO, in order for fighting games to evolve and keep people interested there has to be introduction of new characters. But, I cant think of one game that has ever introduced ALL new characters. I’m not a big fan of 3s, but it’s not the fact that there are so many new characers, but more the fact that the characters are stupid. I like characters like yun, makoto, urien, alex, etc…but characters like remy, oro, and Q are bad character designs. I think that the bad thing about this game is the character design itself, and not so much the introduction of new characters.
i think it would be great to have all new characters, provided the characters actually had some appeal. all the sf characters were new at some point, so it’s not like it’s impossible to build popularity, but they need to come up with some better characters. i thought the 3s cast was pretty mediocre at best. as far as creating new characters, snk has been much better at it than capcom over the past few years imo. somehow the new snk characters these days just seem a lot cooler than capcom creations, although i still much prefer capcom’s gameplay.
Just make a SF game with SFA3, SF1 and SF3 cast with third strike graphics and everyone will be happy. They can call it SF: Gangbang
I don’t play any Street Fighter comptetively, but two points in your post intrigued me:
Why would removing parry and airblocking please the crowd? I mean, ok, airblocks I can understand. If you jump at your opponent, you leave yourself open.
But parry?! At least put in a Just Guard-function or something then!
FallenAngelII, lots of old-school SF fans miss the old FB zoning strategies which was such a large part of SF originally.
