Why dont you place top 8 first??? and then ask about prize money
Yes. I too would like to know the prize money of the tournaments. It would be nice if this info was posted up somewhere. I already saw that the money comes from the the $10 buy-in… But seeing as I do not know the number of participants, I still can’t figure out what the total prize money is.
This is ridiculous, some of you are incredibly defensive at the mere thought of how much money the top finishers in the biggest tournament of the year, are getting. Give it a fuckin rest, people have the right to ask, and I am one of those people, I have always wondered how the payout structure works, and the thought of only 10 grand for winning is just shocking. There were 90,000 people watching the stream on Sunday, probably more, but I had it full screen, and wasn’t checking, but that is a ton of people, there needs to be bigger payouts. Period. Flame me all you want, the fact is 10 grand is not shit for the accomplishment of winning Evo.
**Personally, I feel that if you win, you should get enough money to buy a couple high priced hookers (good looking, born female, disease free, etc.), a huge pile of blow (or whatever drug is preferred, blow is just the one most associated with having a lot of money), and enough to live off of for at least a month. **
I don’t think this is unreasonable, it’s Evo for fucks sake.
Kappa.
Yes since I am such an asshole for wondering about the money involved in Evo which is not easy to win.
Thats generally how payout structures are for tournaments.
Venue fee that people pay goes toward the venue/equipment needs, game entry fees goes toward the pot. Unless someone decides to donate some money toward the pot. Be it a person that adds a few hundred bucks, or a company that adds a few thousand.
Go watch the dogface interview of the cannon brothers back on 09 and they mention that they were taking financial losses every year just running the B series/Evo. Which pretty much happens at every tournament unless the TO also owns the venue. But the only case like that I can think of is DreamTR’s tournaments at his arcade. Which he’d still probably make more money renting the arcade out to families birthday parties rather than tournament goers. So comparitively speaking he’s still taking a loss when he hosts tournaments.
The general rule is that if enough people enter, the 3rd place player should at least make back his entry fee for the tournament. Which goes with the 60/30/10 or 70/20/10 pay scheme.
If you listened to the wakeup SRK podcast a couple of months ago with Keits and CEO Jeibailey, setting up a tournament is no easy task. Then you multiply the scale and factor in the location it is significant bigger operation which in turn is sure to incur more costs.
And EVO is much like the NFL, they do not have to or owe it to anyone to show them their books. Yeah it would build hype to disclose the winnings of the top winners, but to the letter of the law they don’t have to do shit.
People scream “More money!,” but don’t go to the tourney themselves.
EVO is still “young.” It took the AFL-NFL 15 years to really get noticed. Only then did it truly rake in the cash, but even in Football’s infancy, the talent and skill was beyond awesome - Vince Lombardi legacy.
What people forget though is that MANY of the people who go to compete know that the chances are against them to make top 8. So why go?
Really good reasons:
[]Why spend $1000s at Universal Studios or Disneyland? You’re still only in Orlando or SoCal.
[]During after hours at EVO, YOU’RE IN LAS VEGAS
[]No slight to Orlando or SoCal, but there’s a reason the organizers chose Las Vegas
[]Why spend $400 (travel and room assuming you share a room) when your skill probably won’t put you in the money?
[]EVO is like the Superbowl and World Cup and Wimbledon and the damn Horsey & F1 Triple Crown in the sense of competitive level and environment
[]EVO is UNLIKE those aforementioned in the sense of MONEY MATCHES!!! Didn’t yall watch the after hours stream? How much $$$ do you think each player racked in? Do you know? Since you don’t know, do you have a right to know? Hell no. You can’t ask the Green Bay Packers to play an Exhibition with the former Superbowl champs, the NO Saints, after the Packers win. But you can challenge Tokido to a money match.
[]What if you don’t want to challenge Tokido to a money match? Then side bet on the match you’re watching against someone else.
[]Reminder of above: You’re in Las Vegas

CAPCOM can’t bring you EVO, Namco can’t bring you EVO, & we all know Midway (b/c they’re bankrupt) can’t bring you EVO (kudos to Nether Realm Studios for saving MK). A few choice guys started it, and a community is nurturing it. This was the first EVO that had substantial heavy investment from the big wig companies who previously thought the tourney was just a bunch of boys mashing buttons.

Moral of this story (sorry I took to long):
If you want EVO to have more money, more hype, more involvement from sponsors, & more hot models like E3 (<— this would be awesome), you can do your best by putting your money where your mouth is and go to the next EVO.
Personal note: I haven’t been to a single EVO =( b/c I never have enough $$$ to just go. I will next year =D BRING BACK 3S!!! If the tourney organizers don’t like 3S, so be it. I’ll hang out at the Focus Fire set-up.
Suggestion to EVO organizers:
Have yall ever thought of a “Donate to EVO” paypal button? Not to the website, but specifically to the tournament itself? It would provide an outlet for people who can’t go, but want to go to at least support the competitors. Maybe it can help stretch the payout to the top 8.
Also, how about more raffles? Does SRK even have any raffles? “$5 ticket gives people a chance to win a room at EVO” or something like that.
im sorry man said the same thing u said cus did read your post
All you whiners about the cash prize are complete idiots. Totally ignorant. People go to these events not to make money (yes, there is a chance and that fuels motivation) but seriously, people go to tournament events to have enjoy themselves. It’s for fans to get together and have a laugh.
If you up the prize money, it gets more attention, sure - for those who aren’t even fans. You will get these random people whose only aim is to win that prize money (you whiners, maybe?). Can you imagine the outrage from fans, if Chinese gold farmers suddenly gave up gold farming on WoW, trained their ass off on SF4 or Tekken for a year, enters tourney, wins the event, gets the million dollars and when he gets on the stage to speak he says: "Thanks for the mil, I don’t care about SF4, the money is good though!’ This is then proceeded by wins in Tekken, etc by his gold farming posse. SWEET!
Whenever you include large sums of money in something that you enjoy, things get ugly.
P.S. @Graphf: $100-200k is peanuts. I don’t know why you are trying to work out who is pocketing the money (which I don’t even believe there is much to pocket after paying for venue and other expenses). To me, that’s almost like trying to work out who’s the person who paid one dollar less for a restaurant bill split between 20 people… just get over it, for God’s sake.
