How much mashing is ok?

Ok. I’ve been way out of the game. Last street fighter I played was II. I downloaded stv about a month or so ago and been playing a little. Pretty much only Ibuki seriously. I was doing good on level 5 cpu so I did the PSN 3 day free trial for online. Yeah I got smoked. Think I only won 3 games and lost MANY. Kinda ruined it for a bit but I’m over it.

I’m trying to get better and reading reading reading and trying to get my muscle memory. I really trying to mash less but I find it nearly impossible to hit the button only once for a given move.

Example is ibuki’s s.mk s.mp hard DP. I hit the mk once then I prob hit the mp like 2-3 times and then try like hell to only hit the hk once for the DP. Is this pretty typical of most players? I find the timing to be so very very tight on all these combos. Is there any training aids that can help me get my timing better so I can mash less?

Thanks

1- timing for combos is not tight in sf5. it’s very easy. sf5 is the most scrub friendly game in the series.
2- game allows buffering so “mashing” will help your execution in certain combos. for example, target combos are a series of normal hits that cancel into each other. in this game, to get the target combo you need to hit the buttons in correct order. it doesnt matter how many times you hit a button, how many inputs you sent for that move. if the target combo or a cancel combo is lets say a>b>c, it doesnt matter if you do it like aaaaabbbcccccc.(as long as you send the correct input during cancelable frames ofc.)
3- buffering can be considered ok but, generally mashing will not help you up your game. mashing inputs without confirming hits will get you punished.

@drskull you say the order is all that is important but if I do s.mk s.mp hard DP I feel I have to time that s.mp perfectly. There is a need for a delay between the s.mk and the s.mp. It is on certain connection strings I feel.

Thanks for your reply.

I forgot to mention sorry, for links you have to time it. the game allows buffering but still it’s not tekken.

to sum it all up: you can mash cancels or target combos, yet you have to time the links. I dont know if you played sf4 but this game (sf5) is pretty easier in that aspect. there is a much bigger window for linking two normal moves.

while linking normals you can double tap if you feel that it helps you landing combos.

I presume you are a new player so I suggest you to start with easy to pick chars like blanka or ryu until you get the feeling, not ibuki. this game is easier than the other sf games yes. but some characters are still hard to play compared to the others.

I’m a new old player! Middle aged man trapped at home with kids. Used to play TekKen a lot back in day and soul caliber. Maybe that is hurting me now because that was just the order.

I hear you on Ibuki, but she is fun too. On sf2 I played ryu, guile, and a little blanka. I like quicker players.

new old stock with the original packaging.

I hear you man, I don’t know if 32 counts as middle age (if I die when I’m 64 yes it does!).motor skills and reactions fly away with age I used to grind sf4 but I’m a filthy casual now.
