How much did Daigo Win? the other winners?

Yeah the Facebook comparison is a stretch. But I think his point was more that Evo will grow rapidly over the next several years.

The Evo brand is really worth nothing, the only people I could see placing a value on it are niche gaming companies/organizations. I know that in Shoryukenville, where everyone is a hardcore Street Fighter fanatic that it seems like this huge event that everyone cares about, but outside of our little circle, who is left? To a non Street Fighter fan/player, a competitive Street Fighter match is confusing and probably uninteresting to watch. Now I know you’re thinking “No way Evo is MAD HYPE, how could anyone not want to watch it?!?” well, when was the last time you sat down and watched a Starcraft or a Counter-Strike match (which btw are both more popular than Street Fighter)? Also, would you watch that over an episode of Cops or Cheaters? Maybe you would, but I’m willing to bet that the majority of people in our demographic alone (Male aged 18-35), would not. Again that’s still only one demographic, if you’re looking at anyone older than 35 or anyone female, I’d say 99% of them would rather watch a sitcom over a videogame tournament. It would be much more profitable to advertise during an episode of Cops or Cheaters than the Evolution tournament since you’re advertising your product to a much larger audience.

And if you’re talking about Evolution making a profit some other way besides advertisements (like how Blizzcon charges $150 a ticket), I’m guessing that would be met with some backlash.

Agreed

He is right, even people on the street who love SF and other fighting games a very high precent(high precent as in almost…all of them) probably do not even know about Evo maybe if capcom and other companies put fliers inside the games they sell perhaps promoting Evo it would help get the word out a hell of alot faster then us. Which brings me to another point…I wonder why capcom/others haven’t tried that? lol it actually seems like a good idea I would assume there are some kind of legal issues and people would be arguing over money ~.~

IMO, EVO could be as big as how Poker exploded commercially when Main Events were published on ESPN. it definitely has the potential. whats great is how advanced fighting games (particularly) SF4 has gotten to where it applies the same skills such as being patient, gutsy, executing, or mind games that Poker or even a game of chess has. you could do a 30 min segment (including commercial breaks) on just only 1 or 2 matches with commentary and breaking down how the fight went and what mistakes were made, something like Gootecks’s Cross Counter show. that definitely has G4 potential. heres a vid i found on Arturo Sanchez talking about SF’s potential

What they make and how much it’s worth is different I think. For example nemo from SD was explaining to me how his liquor store makes X amount of dollars yearly, but could be sold for $1-$2mil.

At least that’s what I think Geo is trying to get at.

Exactly right. Companies are valued on everything they will potentially earn in the future. There is an accepted way to do this valuation within the business world with a formula.

If you think that Evo will get larger, have lots of sponsors, that fighting games will become more mainstream, and that a potential buyer would like to be able to advertise to all those people, then Evo could potentially be worth quite a lot of money today.

It’s why venture capital exists, why people invest in early stage companies, and why companies which lose money today still get bought and sold for vast sums.

Take it for what it’s worth, but I heard through a reliable source that G4 and Electronic Arts are getting ready to engage in a joint sponsership for EVO, and that part of the deal calls for expanding the event to twice a year as well as moving its location to the LACC.

Dear Lord I hope you’re trolling.

really? news to me. who is your “reliable” source?

I couldn’t have put it better.

yo uhhh

Where do I invest in EVO and get on the board? lawl

The lack of an understanding of basic economics in this thread is mind-boggling.

Considering how Geo was also talking about EVO as a future asset, among his other points, people should…you know…read.

I can give really simple examples, but having an understanding of the process of purchasing an asset and how said asset’s value is determined is all you need.

Thank you kind sir. You’re exactly right, it’s the idea of valuing something today on the basis of its higher value in the future that some people are having a hard time grasping.
