How do you go about picking a character to main?

I pick top tier…

It doesn’t matter… If it’s your first play just pick a cooler one and get your ass kicked after the 3rd match

Match-ups and tiering play a big role in selecting a main. Because no matter how much you liked to play as Sean in 2nd impact he’s just not worth it in 3rd strike.

Depends on what game. Marvel, there is no choice. 3rd strike, it’s playing the same game without good options (imo, Dudley/Makoto are as good as YCK).

A game like SFIV or anything along those lines, I’ll pick whoever my favorite character is. Not the way they play, just whichever I think is cool. I’ve forced myself to play characters correctly, even if I happen to hate their play style. Fortunately, the characters I like always happen to have a good balance in them. Either way, to me…playing the character I think is the coolest always outweighs the style it forces me to play. Overall, I’m happy if I can use who I want viably.

Depends on the game really. If it’s a series I’ve been playing for a while I tend to just stick with favorites, like Guile in SF games. For 2D fighters, I mostly like charging characters so I go for those first. 3D fighters, I don’t know, I have to like how they play, don’t care much about how they look. Funny thing is, even though I don’t do this on purpose, most of my mains are all blond. For example: Guile, Abel(SF4), Paul, Nina, Steve(Tekken), Terry, Benimaru, Ash(KoF). A lot more, but I just always thought it was funny that most characters that appeal to me happen to be blond.

The most Goth/Punk/Emo/Scene character in the game.

Guilty Gear: A.B.A
Soul Calibur: Tira
Tekken: Lili (Emo custom)
Million Knights Vermillion: Yuri
Daraku Tenshi: Ruccio Roche

I suppose you tend to have a few characters who you are very comfortable with (generally Ryu, Guile, Sagat and Zangief, who recur in most games). But then you might see somebody else who you like because they are cool, or unusual, or whatever.

Actually, I think unlocking characters is lame. However, I do like the combo missions from SFEX and SFIV, as this is something that forces you to think about each character for a bit.

So who’s picking my BB main for me!?

Depends on the game. It could be any combination of playing style, character design, animations, characters friends are playing or other superficial crap.

I know right…

My mains tend to be big, strong, and slow (usually grapplers). I like using characters that do the most damage in the least amount of moves cuz my dexterity to pull of complex moves/combos isn’t what it used to be.

i like to pick guys that have unique fighting styles and can be used in a way that confuses opponents. In SF IV = Vega, in Soul Caliber = Taki, Mortal Kombat = Milenna (although I used mad diff. characters in MK II).

I also use Ryu because he’s the F’n man ever since I was a kid and could barely see over the arcade cabinet throwing hadokens

whoever i think looks cool. i also have to see whether a characters moveset allows for lots of interpretation.

When I first start the game, I pick the character with the most sex appeal and has flashy stuff. If I’m solid with them, I’ll stick with them. If not, I’ll fuck around with every character until I find someone that fits my play style (mostly rushdown or a fast character with a good defensive game).

Usually it’s the “badass chick” that I look for first(Ivy, the Williams sisters, Viper) , and if the game lacks that, it the “homo-looking” guy( Raphael, Vega).

Sometimes I find match vids of certain games and see which character looks fun.

mvc2 i picked sentinel every time, i love giant robots that beat the shit out of everyone and knows kung-fu unfly. i picked zangief in alpha 3 cause hes a fuck monster. i picked blanka in sf4 cause blanka is fucking blanka. 3rd strike i picked chun cause i hate 3rd strike. st i picked claw cause wall dives r to good. kof games i have to play billy or whip or i wont play

It’s hard to say, but there’s typically a character in a game that I just sort of gravitate towards. Mostly a look thing, with maybe sometimes some influence from their personality. After that comes their playstyle, though, I can’t really think of a situation where I decided on a character and thought “you know what, fuck this character, they’re too hard/too shitty”.

I do attempt to learn the basics for as many characters as possible, though, so that if I find a character I’m most comfortable with, I can stick with them for certain matches while I attempt to step my game up with the character I really want to main.
