Play through arcade mode a few times, usually starting with whichever character is on the cover to get acquainted with the game and also to see which other characters were badass. Proceed to further playthroughs to see which I’m good with.
This.
I played Asuka (Elegant) and Yoshimitsu (Unique) in Tekken … For SF though, I found solace with Chun-Li.
In GGX2 it was Venom, Johnny, Jam.
My mains must look good while they kick ass. I actually play fighting games to pull off visually rewarding combos more than I play to win.
-charge character
-safe combo ender and/or block string
-good poke
-mobility
or Rolento, Karin, Adon and Dudley
I say try to find a general character style with options that fit your playstyle. Just look at a game you already play a lot, look at your mains, then ask why is that character your main, then keep testing in the new game until you find that character that fits that playstyle.
IE: I usually use characters who are very technical, and very hard to defend against if played right, they need to have a good rushdown , they need some sort of projectile which can be used for some defense when in far range, also I like to do jump mixups a lot in general. So when I pick up a game I know thats what I’m looking for. I always look to play 2 characters exclusively I noticed also.
My mains are
Ibuki/Ken in 3rd strike,
Doc/Falco in SSBM
C.Viper/Rufus in sf4,
Lei/Nina in Tekken,
ST: Chun/Fei long
VF5: Eileen
Id use Millia if I played a lot of GG also.
:wonder::sad:
On topic.
I usually go by appearance, play style and a tier list.
i just learn every character and pick 5 main characters or teams
the more blockstun the better

Either have to be grappler with a dp or a little girl.
I tend to go for female characters I find attractive. There’s a user around here with a “Beret Fetish” avatar (Cammy, Noel from BB, and Sion from Melty Blood), don’t remember his name. Pretty much described me to a T though, those are three of my favorite fighting game females. So basically any girl with a cute hat.
There are a few exceptions, like Seth in SF4 (disappointed with how Cammy plays in SF4), Lee in T5, and I usually have either K’, Kyo, or both in my KOF teams.
Play a few times in arcade mode and see who I can play the best with and the most comfortable with. I test out other characters to see if they are good enough to be my main.
For some reason, I tend to main the titular character (who I usually think is the coolest) and female character, at least when I first get the game. I think I’ve subconsciously done it since Street Fighter II. For example:
SF II: Ryu & Chun Li
Mortal Kombat games: Sub Zero and Sonya (later Kitana)
SF Alpha games: Ryu & Chun Li (later Sakura)
SF III 3S: Ryu & Makoto
SF IV: Ryu & Chun Li
Tekken games: Initially Kazuya & Nina in the first two games, currently Jin & Asuka as of T5DR.
Virtua Fighter: Akira & Aoi
Guilty Gear: Sol (I later switched to Johnny, because he’s pimp) & Baiken
King of Fighters XII: Kyo & Leona
Blazblue: Ragna & Litchi
I eventually branch out to other characters, but those are the first two characters that I initially practice with. I don’t know, just for some reason, I strive to main a male and female pair /shrug.
Whoever I kick the most ass with.
Pick what u have fun with.
I usually go for the mysterious or underdog character specifically low tier like
3S Q SF4 Fei long
no shotos because they have a boring ass fighting style that you have probaly seen a thousand times literally. Best bet is to just fiddle with anybody til you figure out your best playing style.
Find one I like.
Play through all of them until I find one that I’m comfortable with. They’re usually the fast ones.
When first started playing Street Fighter I gravitated to Chun immediately (but that is probably because I was filling a stereo stype with out knowing it). But because of that I tend to do well with characters with a mix of charge and shoto moves. Venom from GG immediately comes to mind. He’s the only character that I play seriously in that game, i dont even have a second, lol.
Arcana Heart: Maori Kasuga; Kamui
Every street fighter or sf spin off: Chun li; Vega; Bison;Guy
CVS2: Chun/Vega/Rock
KOF: Vanessa/Momoko/King/Kasumi/Rock
Samurai Showdown: Ukyo; Nakaruru; Hattori Hanzo; Charlotte
MVC2: Chun/Black Heart/Psylocke (man I suck lol)
Cant think of anyone else right now.
Almost purely aesthetic. I learn to deal with that whole “gameplay” business afterward.
For casual games I’ll start with the “main” or average/well-rounded character until I get the feeling of the game/engine, then I decide if I want a faster, more stamina or whatever.
Now, if I want to master a game, I will play all chars until the end of single player, test them in training mode and then choose one to main.
I pick the ones that look cool, have a cool background, or have nice legs (in that order). I usually end up with the spazzy, obnoxious, high execution ones.
