How do you define "cheap character"?

this thread sucks

Huuuuuuuuh?!?!

But-but, if there is no such thing as cheap, how can you start playing cheap?! Won’t this cause a rip in the space-time continuum somehow?!

You want the real definition of cheap? Ask Smash players!

On a serious note, everyone’s definition is different, which is why its never, ever, ever, ever right to ban something from a game based on how a bunch of people feel. I know this isn’t on topic, but proof should be required.

On topic, I used to think a lot of things were cheap. Now I think they are hilarious. Proceed.

This thread is cheap

Sim in ST is cheap. =p

Also, toilet paper is pretty cheap. Shit, gas is cheap now too.

Pretty much any technique that has ever won a fight has been called cheap by people.

‘Hey, you can’t just keep attacking me in the corner’ or ‘hey, stop throwing me’ or ‘hey, don’t use X character because they’re cheap.’ or even the one time my friend told me to stop launching me into air combos in MvC2.

Combos really are cheap…

Use the tactics that when, if the game is so stupid as to allow ridiculous things (like infinite throw loops for every character) then the game isn’t worth playing.

If I had to use a definition: Something that is low risk, but has a good enough payback. It’s efficient and safe.

Pretty much how I feel on the matter.

Also, if you have to either ban it (legitimately for a tournament) or a majority of people stop playing the game all together just to show the people who use it just how much of a dick they’re being… then it’s apparently “cheap”.

Synonyms: broken, banned, god-tier, “Is that all you know how to do?”, fuck this

But yeah… It’s Marvel… Are you really trying to differentiate what in that game is cheap?

imo a cheap (broken) char to be something where the only way to beat it is to use it yourself

You know the government has really fucked with your mind when statements like this come out of people. Madness ! :wasted:

All this “cheap doesn’t exist” nonsense is silly. Of course cheap exist, and it’s something that requires low risk / effort and gives a high reward. You get something big for very little, hence it comes cheap. Things like Vega’s walldive loop in ST, for example. I’m sure all these posters who say “cheap doesn’t exist olol” agree that it’s a silly low-risk high reward tactic that would be better out of the game and that it being taken out in STHD is a good thing.

Now, using “cheap” stuff is by no means dishonorable or a crime and, as long as it isn’t something truly broken (ST Akuma) nobody should be looked down for using it (I main Honda in ST, who am I to judge anyone heh); it’s in the game, and you do what you have to do to win. They are even really fun to use usually, too. But that doesn’t mean that “cheap” tactics don’t exist and that they shouldn’t be fixed if given the chance.

I mean, the author of “Playing to win” that people like to reference in this kind of threads has been working hard to get rid of such stuff in STHD!

As an aside, I make a distinction between overpowered and cheap. There are things that are very powerful, but require a proportional amount of effort to pull off (for example: Extra mode Kyo’s infinite in OG KOF '98; very rewarding but really hard to pull off).

^ I agree with that, exactly right. Cheap stuff exists and you should expect it in any fully fleshed out fighting game. Try not to complain about it.

If people don’t think there is such a thing as cheap, they are delusional. Even Tokido admitted that Claw was cheap, and he uses Claw as his main. The definition is pretty simple, it’s just any strategy that is relatively easy to execute AND is far too advantageous.

Tick throws in ST are cheap (Zangief especially). O Sagat is cheap. Claw is cheap. Whip’s stand CD in kof2k2(something I abuse) is cheap. Choi is cheap. Athena is cheap. There’s a lot of cheap stuff. Technically beatable but requires far too much effort to beat, and puts you in a very disadvantageous situation when attempting to beat it, while hardly putting the user at risk.

Cheap is throwing fireballs all day. Because I play a grappler. If they fought me close range, I’d own them!!!

NOOBS@@@!!!

If your definition of cheap is a stupid character that wins with little effort then yes there is definitely something as cheap (walldives, O. Sagat). If by cheap you mean a character that destroys a game (Akuma, SNK bosses) then no, there is always the option to ban such a character. I like the second one mainly because I don’t like the word “cheap” thrown around.

Ken is so strong in Puzzle Fighter its almost always a stupid idea to not pick him. Yet the game remains fun even in Ken vs. Ken. I actually think its a better game that way. Does this make Ken cheap?

Cheat codes are cheap :stuck_out_tongue:

The Game Genie is a Cheap character.

cheap are asians on the corner that love you long time for five dolla!!!

seriously though i dont consider things cheap unless you cant beat it period. being able to infinite all day in bleach:bof for ds til you get one meter to damage cancel then i flash step behind and repeat is cheap since you cant stop it once its landed and theres no dizzy out. using certain capsules in dbz b3 is cheap as you can alter the system so your opponent has to use double ki to teleport counter, and loses ki for transforming while you are pretty much playing on the default system using yet another capsule. with that setup you can infinite someone all day.

yes those games are fun for shits and giggles but as long as those options exist in them you cant play them too seriously.

as far as mags goes those msp players just suck since any good corridor will slap them in their face making psylocke useless from afar if youre playing a proper cable.

What can I get for 5 dollars?

Anyting you want.

top ramen is cheap.
