How do you deal with a 40 hour work week?

I worked 116 hours a week for 4 years until I get layed off late last year (oil field). This 40 hour work week stuff is awesome. I get to go home every day and have 5-7 hours to myself each day. I imagine 40 hour work week would suck if you had like a 1 hour commute each way though since you’d only get 3-5 hours to yourself and the driving would probably be worse mentally than your actual job.

Technically it is a ‘day-rate’ whether you work 4 hours in 1 day or 24 hours you make the same. Generally you work 12-16 hours. Sometimes a job ends at like 2 a.m. though and you get payed for the full day.

I deal with it by Using an excel sheet with all my scheduled plans. on weekends i clean up the house and go to Dave & busters.

My mom pays half my rent and my aunt who lives with me pays the other half so I don’t work. I’m 24 (will be 25 in July) and I haven’t had a job since I was 19.

I’ve had about 5 or 6 jobs in my entire lifetime (shit, I may have had seven) and I just kept getting fired because I couldn’t keep my anger under control. Every job I ever had I got fired for the same shit…an angry outburst that resulted in someone getting punched or something getting thrown or a window being broken. The same thing would happen. I would get hired full time, be good for about a month or two and then I just fly off the handle and lose my fucking job. Then I’m sitting at home waiting for my last check while my mom is yelling at me for losing yet another job. The only time I didn’t get fired for something aggressive is when a co-worker prevented a suicide attempt. I tried to hang myself in the utility closet. Man those were dark times. This is also the only time my mom didn’t yell at me for losing a job. She also stopped pressuring me to get another one after that happened.

Right now I’m in college for computer science. I’ll probably start working again when I graduate…that’s if I don’t have the same problem as every other graduate. You know, finding a job. Even then that’s a long way off. I’m just finishing Calculus 1 and I haven’t even enrolled in a programming class as of yet. I’m just taking gen ed and math courses right now.

If you showed that sort of side, maybe your “friends” wouldn’t be jacking you. Also good luck getting a long term job with issues like that and if you list those jobs on your resume the corporate people will call and ask what happened.

Basically enjoy working retail, unless you have a hookup.

Look into a trade school honestly. Does not seem like you would work well working an it job.

sheeeeit, I just look forward to break times and lunch…along with the fact that even during the most stressful times at my current job, it’s not even close to the misery and stress of the one I had before it. Also–there’s portable gaming for those breaks and lunch. The PS Vita is with me every day.

Hours-- if I work every bit of the overtime this week, it’s possible I could get 70+, actually… I’ve already worked 41 so far. Like the great WuTang said: Cash Rules Everything Around Me. The pay from all this overtime is going to be so delicious. This is despite me not getting the “1.5x” bonus normally associated with overtime, due to my position. If I got that 1.5x for the OT, oh that pay would really be insane then.

Motivation to find another path is what keeps me going. As off as that may sound, I find keeping my current occupation as a stepping stone to a better opportunity. I’ve flat out quit my last job because it became too much to deal with. My current gig is enough to get by and build back up from the time I was unemployed. My advice is to hang onto the job and do some soul searching on what might be a great move up.

I’m not going to complain about the job I currently have because I do not intend to be there that much longer but man is it super ass…

Use your spare time to do reading, learn a new language, study new subjects, start a side hustle. You should consider yourself blessed to be in this position. Either you’ll be promoted to a point where you have no free time, or your life will be enriched with your extra hobby time

I just work at a local grocery store overnight. but with us we can leave once we are done even tho that only happens like once every 2 weeks. i average about 45 hours a week. I sometimes go help other stores on my days off for more overtime if i dont have any plans. I like having money and time goes by fast with my kind of job.

I work every night in a warehouse getting whipped like a darkie. In the 14 months I’ve been here my bf% has dropped to 10% and I’ve put on roughly 30 lbs of lean muscle. Also ive gained working knowledge of Polish since its only me and the remnants of the Red Army in this shithole.

This is silly, i work 50-60 every week and have two kids at home. if you are bored find another job.
I am in marketing as well(advertising sales) and i know a lot of companies are like yours. they have heavy redundancies in marketing(hospitals are the worst) and the truth is they could let go of several people in your department and if you are lucky enough to keep your job they will pile the work on you.
Chances are this will happen, my advice don’t complain about it. If they know you are not busy companies are always looking to cut expenses.
Is your company public? if so all it takes is the stock to drop one point and they will start looking at ways they can reduce staff.
I have been in the professional environment for 16 years and I have experienced both ways. believe me too slow during the day is better than too busy.

I honestly could find another position tomorrow. I just got some offers today from other companies. I won’t even indulge them because they don’t work with my interests, it’s kind of a first world problem thing. I’m not worried about anything other than my free time anymore. I probably should start my own business, or change careers.

If you have to question how to deal with the 40 hour work week, you’re not pushing yourself enough. I lump it in with people that complain about their pay: what are you going to do to change it? Leadership paths get you into a role that makes that 40 whiz by real quick and next thing you know you’re pushing 50-60 hour weeks. But you’ve got to want it and you’ve got to have the passion to want that. May be time for some reflecting on where you are and where you want to be on a specific timeline that works for you, not just “someday it ‘might’ work out”. I’m guilty of being complacent in my own progress through the business world. It’s not a shame to hit a flat spot in development, it’s a shame to stay that way.
