The guy’s going to be a scrub for life if you start him off with Blanka. I take back what I said about Iori now too, since my friend mentioned to me that a beginner might get into the extremely bad habit of spamming Iori’s roll. Recommend to him Cammy, Sagat, and whoever else he wants for now. Don’t post here saying that you painted the shit out him to make him quit in casual as well. He’s going to see that post and assume you’re bragging. He’ll quit for good then and good luck to you finding a new guy to play with.
The reason Rock’s so good because of his corner mix-ups? You came to that conclusion from watching those videos on the Toro/OTK website I’m sure of it.
Although it obviously helps, Rock doesn’t need the corner to play a solid mix-up game. The reason Rock is so good is because he has five frame d.HK, long ranged d.LK that gives +6, random elbows, JD, Reppuken, one button anti-air, three all very useful supers, a super long ranged 360 grab, j.HK, counter hit d.MK xx elbow. The teleport doesn’t even come into play until you play against good players that know to block, because most mashers and wake up super users will mash you right out of epsilon setups like “random d.MK xx teleport xx grab, assume it will always work” anyway.
Practice punishing rolls, jump-ins, whiffed moves, and mashing first and foremost. Know your combos too of course. Worry about all the gimmicky corner stuff later.
A good combo to practice would be the 360 grab, break, then super for example. 360, laser, and then juggle with a d.HK in the corner is another useful combo, but it’s up to him whether he wants to practice that or not since the timing is a little bit harder than just doing a super right off the bat. Things like counter hit d.LK, d.MK xx super he needs to know for sure though. That’s Rock’s bread and butter.
You wont be a begginner for life if you learn CBS first. Take Cammy for example. She is brain dead easy to learn, and good pokes. All he needs is to use two buttons. Gives him an idea of how footies is played.
