How do I change the region on my PS3?

Hello. I have an English PS3, but I am now in South Korea teaching English for the next year. When I try to play SSF 4 online, it keeps thinking I am in America and so it keeps trying to match me with Americans which isn’t good because A) the lag is horrible most of the time and B) because of the time difference there aren’t always a lot o ppl on. I can go into quick match and set “Region” to any, but I was mostly wondering how to do this so that for Endless Battle and Ranked modes it would stop giving me Americans. And on the flip side, because I have that little American flag next to me I feel like a lot of Asians think I will have high ping and they don’t play. The other day I set Quick Match Region to any and tried to play with some Japanese and Koreans and I got kicked out of the first 5 lobbies I joined.

Same thing for 3rd Strike online. I feel like it is always trying to give me Americans because most of the time the pings are outrageous. Plus a lot of them have mics and I can tell they are American.

Sorry if this isn’t the place to post this but I figured it was kind of techie lol.

I think it is depending on your account. and since the account management for the ps3 is so crappy i guess you need to create a second psn account for your new region.
You could also change the language of your ps3 but i guess this wont change anything to the region of your account.

You can’t. Region setting are set by the Hardware in the Console and your PSN account. Making a new account will not work, as the Network still sees a US PS3 and not a Asian PS3.
Region setting on your PS3 effect your PSN network settings and DVD/ Blu Ray Region Lockout. This is to speed up the PSN account creation and sign-on process as well as your other PSN setting like the Online store. This does not effect games being played as there no region lock out on games on the PS3.
Also until recently the PSN network is managed differently in different regions.
While there are software means to change this, you be in violation of the terms of your PSN account and can have your account banned.

You only other option is to contact Sony directly and see if they are even willing to help, but this could be a one way process.

That’s not how it works. I have an Asia region PS3 (HK specifically), but if I log on with my American PSN account, it shows my region as US.

To the OP: just make a Korean PSN account. As far as SF matchmaking is concerned, it will display you as Korean.

It’s based on your account.

Get an Asian PSN account and you should be fine.

Dang. Alright thanks everyone for the responses, appreciate it!

Never mind, I did not realize they changed that. When I first made my account according to Sony at the, it was not an option.

You must be confused with a different system PS3 has always gone by account not to trash you but you should really not give advice to anyone if you don’t know what you are talking about it can really waste someones time or money

It was not my intention of misleading the guy and I did not talk out of my ass. I spoke what was once true, apparently Sony ditch that part of the code long ago in a older firmware patch and I was not aware of it. I also based it from something I tried to do 3 or 4 years ago and failed, there was an error text but I long since forgot what it said.

well at least it turned out it is changeable ^^
i also had the problem but only for PSN online store cause i live in germany and here you get less content then in the US for example. So i also had to create a second PSN account in order to fix that

Hmm? I’ve been running multiple accounts on my PS3s since '07.

Doesn’t Korean PSN require a resident number? I think most Americans get theirs through Japan.

I have an Korean Alien Registration Card that I thought would work since the number is in the same format but it ended up not working…might have to go the Japan route.

A lot of places in Korea will not take foreign resident numbers. Looks like PSN is one of them.

Japan is the best route you have. I think all of the expats in Korea use Japanese PSN accounts. I think the only way to create a Korean one is to have a resident do it for you, say a wife or girlfriend or really close friend.

Knowing my luck I probability screwed up something along the way

Elboborey,

I have a us and a korean psn account and a korean ps3. I also used my alian registration with no problems. I play my u.s. Cod: black ops on both servers. I have a few other korean games witch play fine. Though my assasins creed2 alot of the written stuff is in korean even though I set it to english.

Missing person,

I have never had a problem with any site or place in or outside of korea accepting my id number.

Also what do you mean alot of expats get their id’s through japan?

You don’t. You have to create a new account.

The Xbox Live options on region changes is slightly better. But that’s not saying a whole lot.
