How do I build an exact copy of a Madcatz/Hori out of wood?

I am looking for schematics on some of the more popular fighting stick cases as I intend to craft one out of wood. I want to copy some of the more popular cases for aesthetic reasons as well as ease. I want to put custom art and everything after and I feel it would be easier if the case turns out exactly like a TE2 or a Hori Rap4 or something lol. If anyone can help me find exact build schematics PLEASE let me know. The only ones I can find are the ones on Slagcoin

Dude that’s like me asking, “how can I build my own space shuttle”? Just look online at examples of wood made sticks and make one similar to that. You’re not gonna make an EXACT copy of one of those sticks. Just sayin.

I don’t think you’ll find anyone with exact schematics of retail arcade sticks, mainly because if you’re going to build a custom, why copy a retail stick? If you want the look of the retail stick, why not just buy it?

Besides, building a case out of wood is different than molding one out of plastic; you have to think slightly differently because a) plastic/metal casings are more hollow that mostly-solid wood cases, and b) mounting/assembly is something else that needs to be planned out too.

You’ll probably have to the homework yourself on this one.

You are not going to find exact schematics for any retail stick. And even most people who made something that sorta mimics the TE designs aren’t going to share.
Trust me I seen flame wars pop up because two stick builders just happen to pick very similar design elements.

Your best option is look at what Mad Catz based the TE sticks from, the taito vewlix arcade cabinet.
There been enough Taito Vewlix arcade schematics out there where you can take what you need for the panel design and make some modifications to the design to have a “fight stick” sized Arcade controller.

if you can make an exact copy of the OG hraps that would be bad ass. and ive seen central american woodworkers who have made cases that look close to Madcatz retial sticks or even better.

I don’t understand why you’d want to make one yourself when there’s already a zillion existing sticks out there. Just shop around for a broken one with the case still in great shape. Then scrap everything, clean it up, install brand new stick/buttons, and maybe some spiffy custom artwork.

Done. Got yourself a NEW stick. That’s what i did for mine.

While I generally agree, nothing else comes close to the solid, stable feeling of playing on a wooden (or heck, even MDF) stick that you’ve made YOURSELF.

That said…why copy design cues from production plastic sticks? Come up with something new and different! Or better yet, just keep things simple and focus on making sure that your edges line up, your sanding is smooth and even, and your paint/stain application is perfect.

You’re probably not gonna find schematics for retail sticks. If you really want to go that route, I would recommend downloading a free prototyping/3D modeling tool like SketchUp, measuring (or requesting the measurements) for the sticks you’d like to replicate, then build your stick from those blueprints.
On the other hand, I’ve seen some absolutely gorgeous sticks that people have made out of wood. If you just look at the general structure and shape of something like an HRAP or a Panthera, it’s not something that looks like it should be made out of wood, it looks like it should be a big, glossy hunk of plastic. If you have the ability to craft something like a TE2 out of wood, then do something really cool from a design you made yourself.

I’ll plug Sketchup for a second time, it’s a great design tool for projects like this or for anything, really.

Just freeball your woodcutting/hollowing/hole cutting out of a solid piece of wood and then throw on the metal control panel of your choice. As long as you level it, sand it smooth and stain it, it should come out good. Design and order the art and plexi for the commercially available control panel you installed. You can find the overall dimensions of the sticks you want to imitate to assisr in finding he right size piece of solid wood.

Make a worklog
