How did you get into fighting games?

About 1993. I saw a SF2 cabinet at a rollerskating rink for the first time. Before that, my older brother had told me that this game was just the greatest shit ever, but that was my first time seenig it. I remember seeing Dhalsim and Vega and thinking they were like the Predator 2 characters- the crazy claw-having mask-wearing thing and Dhalsim was some how related to the rastafarian guy. He wore the skulls on his necklace because he wanted revenge, or something.

I was ten, alright, fuck.

What seemed like an eternity later they got it at the 7-11 a few blocks from my house (remember when they used to have games? A sad day when they stopped that…) and I still remember that two kids named Michael owe me 50 and 75 cents each. It was +10 years ago, but I haven’t let that shit go. Interest motherfuckers, that shit builds up. Later still, I remember seeing CE next to a 2 Crude Dudes cabinet at a liquor store a few blocks in the other direction and thinking it was more hotness.

Of course by that point I’d seen the old shitty WW book made by GamePro (not to be confused with the boss HF guide) since one of the kids had brought it to school, and thought it was The Shit.

At some point when CE came out on the Genesis my older bro borrowed it from a friend. I didn’t really know how to play but tried to beat the game on the hardest difficulty anyway IIRC, and lost over 100 times. But I beat that shit. It was probably 1 AM, but I beat that shit. Fuck you, Bison.

I was in love with Street Fighter from pretty much when I first saw it, and actually had SF1 for my Commadore 64, which I assume most people didn’t even know existed.

Still brings back memories. To say nothing of seeing the later Capcom games and going out of my fucking mind X-Men: Children of the Atom (nuts!), Marvel Super Heroes (insane!) and then in 1996…X-Men vs Street Fighter. Beyond words. As a comic book nerd and someone who was also in love with Street Fighter…?

This was mostly just playing against the CPU and fellow scrubs, I didn’t start going to a real arcade until like 1998 when I started going to the old Birdcage Game Room in Sacramento (R.I.P).

Shit was amazing.

Etc.

My first experience with a fighting game was at a pool hall down the street from my house. I remember seeing a lone machine next to a pool table called Street Fighter II. I remember distinctly thinking to myself:

“Street Fighter II? Where the hell is part one?”

So I played and chose Blanka. Couldn’t do any specials but found out I can shock people by mashing all the punches.

It went from that to Mortal Kombat. I got really hardcore into that for a while because my brother was undefeated in my immediate group of friends.

Soon later, discouraged from MK I found out my cousins had picked up SFII for SNES. I was able to beat them a majority of the time so Street Fighter came into my liking.

Rest is history…

there were several arcade stores around my school when I was in elementary schol

i played Street Fighter II and World Heroes when i was 6. Then X-Men vs. Street Fighter at the arcades.

i Don’t play any other genres. no sports or RPGS or anything.

sometimes Ninja Turtles or Sonic the Hedgehog or Megaman.

Well yeah I started off playin zangief when I wuz lil. And now look at me. I use the best zangief known to man today.

I’ve always been a gamer. My older brother was into video games and I guess he got me into them. I don’t remember getting into them, nor do I remember playing my first game. They’ve always been a part of my life to me and fighting games were part of that. I even had a SF2 cabinet in my basement for awhile. Broke eventually, though I wish I still had it. Bet I could learn to fix it.

Saw some friends playing a SF II hack for the NES,and bought the Genesis Champion Edition. The game that REALLY got me into the scene was SF Alpha 2 for the PS one.

I got a owned by some kid who ran the arcade when i was a kid…he had his thugs with him who where to old to be hanging around him…deal was I lose I hand over all my tokens and I win they dont take my tokens…so I went to buy the game…got it…became godly and went back and owned him…his thugs tried some shit my friend was with me so the fight was already over…we won…got banned from the arcade and thats how it began

sounds like something from a movie doesnt it…it happened

Remember seeing a guy play SF2 at wal-mart in the early 90s and decided to play against him, got my butt whooped. Later my child-hood best friend bought an SNES and everytime I came over we would play sf2 all night. From there on it kind of faded away when I was growing up. Fast forward to when I joined the active duty army in 03’, started hitting up on the arcades in 04’ and it rekindled my interest.

…One Day a small kid walks into an Arcade with five dollars from his Mom. He looks over, and sees a crowd of people cheering & screaming over at a game. The boy goes to take a look, and sees 2 men playing Marvel vs Capcom 2…The rest is History.

My first fighting game that i practiced was Virtua fighter 2. I didnt really take it seriously.

sometime back in the 90’s i was scanning the machines looking for left over tokens and i heard Cammy’s theme music and saw the stage. I dont remember what SF it was but, that shit just blew me away. I tried playing and was really embarrassed at how bad i played compared to other people. I could tell there was some major skill being used, people playing mind games and stuff, it was fun to watch.

Years later in 2000 I was tripping and was going to play the skateboard game and there was this crowd of asian kids that i knew from school playing a bunch of street fighter games including marvel. i heard the cammy stage music again and was hooked.

The reason that i HAD to play was that i could see the skill and strategy. I wanted to be that good.

I got Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter for my birthday one year, and I thought it was badass. Then I got SF EX@, and thought it too was badass. Then I got Capcom vs. SNK 2, and it too was badass. Then I got KOF 2k2/3 and it too was badass. And it went from there.

I believe it was an SF2 cab in a Marriot hotel lobby in 91. I was hooked for life after one play.

Played Street Fighter 2 in the arcade. That’s all it took.

Important part topic wise:
My sister and I got a Nintendo Super Famicom with
Street Fighter II The World Warrior.
We started to realize we loved the 2D versus fighting game genre
which we called beat 'm up at the time when
Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting was released for Nintendo Super Famicom.
Our Grandmother made the remark: "Do you people not already have that game?"
In her eyes it was the same game,
for us we could tell everything about the differences and why it was so good.

Not Important part topic wise:
Later we saw The King of Fighters '94 in a magazine,
we where amazed with the amount of characters in it.
And everything looked so big and clear.
We checked out the local rental shop and there
you could hire video game consoles and a game so we did that.
And experienced the Neo Geo for the first time.

When Mortal Kombat II was released we played that a summer vacation long.
We did that also for Super Street Fighter II The New Challengers.
Mortal Kombat series is worse on a Nintendo Super Famicom because
it is more censored then their Western counterparts.
I am really sorry we did not get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Warriors
instead of Mortal Kombat at the time. The TMNT: MW game is more advanced
and looks quite like a SNK game, technical wise.
Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting is our most played video game
on the Nintendo Super Famicom.

My sister has played more versus fighting games then I have.
We both played the whole The King of Fighter series up until part 2003
and Street Fighter II series and up.
We also played games like Waku Waku 7, Capcom’s Vampire series,
Voltage Fighter Cowgaizer and many more.

I tried to learn 3D versus fighting when Tekken 5 game out, that late.
So far it is not to my liking.
My sister just dislikes 3D versus fighting games.
It might have to do with FX Fighter and Battle Arena Toshinden.

Currently we are playing:

  • Capcom VS SNK 2 Millionaire Fighting 2001
  • Street Fighter III Third Strike
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves

Since we are not happy little kids anymore my sister and I
can not play video games together as we have been used to.
So I do not know what she is actually playing currently.
I am willing to bet on any thing she can get her hands on
if it is a 2D versus fighting game.

To satisfy my Street Fighter II lust nowadays,
I play Hyper Street Fighter II on the Sony PlayStation 2.

Being one of the “big people” now I finally got myself a SNK Neo Geo MVS
a few years ago to play The King of Fighters '98 on it.
And am currently anxious to get my hands on
The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match for Sony PlayStation 2.

Currently I am planning to play Guilty Gear XX Accent Core for Sony PlayStation 2.

These where my lines in history of versus fighting games in general.
Off course I played many more versus fighting games,
However the ones mentioned are the ones that formed the way I am today.

So now I got Clich tips like:

  • Try before you buy.
  • Study the game on the internet before you get it.

i dont really remember why i started playing fighting games…(animated sprite violence maybe?:wonder:) but i do know the first fighting game i played was sf2. Ken was the first person i ever picked because he had a red gi. My older bro and cousins used to kill sf2 and Mk…i probably have them to thank for being into fighters so much.

Also when i performed the “sonic boom” with Guile (this is when ppl used to pronounce his name as “Gully”:looney:) for the first time at this arcade in Bridgeport, i remember everyone was like, “oh snap this kid is niiiicce!” i was like seven or so at the time.

-oh yeah, and when i saw Sub-zero’s spinal cord fatality in MK…that blew my young fragile mind away…the Pit was crazy too :wow:…

 gully, i thought i was the only one who called him that.

Mortal Kombat II at the washarateria across the street. They took the machine from the washerateria and I soon got it for genesis with a six button. I grew up off that game.
