It’s not really a bad idea to copy a better player, but that won’t work for long time. You have to master some Akuma set ups and combos yourself.
If you don’t improve your execution on combos or punish the opponent’s mistakes with some fat combos, don’t expect to win with some random mix ups.
JR is very good with Akuma. Very aggresive style.It’s more fun and looks cool anyway.
But, he is a veteran player with good knowledge on the character’s flaws and match ups.

Edit: If you can’t parry well yet, learn to block and tech grab. Better parrying means more experience or some talent(ex, Dyne is the god of parrys online).

It helps a shitload to have opponents who don’t block or push buttons. Ask the guys who fight against me, they know.
not sure whether it’s coming across clearly enough from other posts, but if you pretend that JR just loaded up training mode and set the dummy to “no block”, would you be as impressed? that’s essentially what’s happening cuz none of his opponents in those videos are trying to block anything. nothing against JR as a player… more of a commentary on which videos he decides to post

nevermind all that, just practice. there’s no magic bullet in this game, you’re not missing anything… just time and practice.
edit: i realized that you might misunderstand me and think that it’s simply harder to do those combos in a real game (i.e., with people who block). let me clarify by saying that this game is not just about combos.
