How can anyone play SHMUPs with a stick?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but all the sticks I’ve seen either are registering a direction or they aren’t. So you can’t go slower by pushing less on them like you can on say, a 360 controller. I would think this would be a big disadvantage, right?

I dont get a word you’re saying how does it effect you?

I get what hes saying but there aren’t any shumups that work that way, atleast not any I’ve played.

I tried to play Ikaruga with my stick after playing it for awhile with a controller, and it seemed like a huge handicap since you can’t move slowly. I’m wondering if I’m missing something or if people just play like this despite the difficulty

To be honest, It sound’s like you need to get use to using a stick, Also which stick are you using?

Because traditional shmups don’t have analog control, not even Ikaruga. They’re originally designed to be played in the arcade with likely the exact same parts as your stick (if you’re using a TE or HRAP or even a custom).

Err, does Ikaruga have slow movement?

Every SHMUP I’ve played either has a set movement speed or a button that changes movement.

It must be just the 360 port that has it then. My bad guys

I don’t think the 360 port has it but I could be wrong. This could just be a case of playing on the wrong stick. Playing on a JLF would make it hard to move accurately because of the large throw it has. Hell I even have problems playing shumups on a LS-32 (I find the throw to be big for shumups). I’m currently looking for a seimitsu stick with a shorter throw atm.

I wanna try an LS-40 but what I want to know is if the LS-36 mod has a shorter throw than the LS-40.

Traditonal, non analog, arcade controls are fine. With them, people have been able to do things like (Ch. 5 perfect clear, Dreamcast version).

I use my TE on Ikaruga all the time. Plays great as long as you switch to 4 way.

360 version of Ikaruga takes advantage of the joystick sensitivity. You can move in more than 8 directions. If you want to play it like it was meant to be played in arcades, use an LS-32!

What the Dick?
I only got to Chapter 2.

And I don’t know any Shmups that are Analog either.

Ahh no wonder playing on that port feels like shit sometimes. Still one of my fav shumups  I still want a Seimitsu stick with a smaller throw though.

I love using the LS-32 with round gate but the pivot and throw irk me a bit.

I saw that video!

What? Seems like that would handicap you quite a bit since you wouldn’t have diagonal movement.

Anyways, yes, most shmups do not have analog control, so a digital arcade stick is fine for them (the only exception I’ve played recently is Soldner-X 2 on PS3).

Dual wielding Ikaruga is probably one of the hardest things to do. That video always wows me.

Playing shumps on a stick on a home console is how one replicates the arcade experiences. I don’t think I’ve ever played shump in the arcade that used an analog joystick. In a shump, if you want to move slow, you exploit the parts of the game where there is slowdown. =D There is also really no need to move “slow” since shumps gives you leeway with the character’s hitbox.

It’s just something to get used to…like moving from pad to stick for a fighting game.

I forgot about that. I guess thats the reason why Ikaruga for Xbox Live Arcade doesn’t have slowdown and has analog joystick sensitivity instead. It all makes sense now.

Jesus, now I’m insanely glad I didn’t sell my copy of Ikaruga for the Gamecube yet! Man, after hearing this, I’m never going to play Ikaruga on my Xbox 360 again! :wasted:
