How balanced does it feel?

Hi so, I haven?t gotten the game yet, I will be soon, but just wondering how balanced does this game feel to people? Now I?m not asking for a tier list and I know it?s still early so things can always change, but just does it seem like for the most part all the characters are balanced or close to balance? Or is there any obviously over powered or under powered characters as of now?

Thanks

I wouldn’t say any characters to my knowledge are blatantly over/underpowered but there really seems to be some bad matchups. I don’t think the guide is exaggerating when saying some matchups are 8-2. Probably will be a counter-pick heavy as the game progresses, IMO.

theres a handful of good characters and usable characters, and then there are some that just suck

looks at Sheeva

You look at street fighter and you see characters with and without certain moves or require holding. You look at mortal kombat and you see characters with moves but different range or height. Sheeva has some unblockable moves but so does Ermac. All in all, characters are more balanced then any other game you’d find on this web site.

I actually find the game to be pretty damn balanced. You don’t have characters that pretty much dominate the field such as Saget in SF4. Instead, people pick a character because it suits their play style. The cool factor doesn’t play a part in this because every character in this game looks badass.

However, if I were to say a character is broken at the moment, it would be Kung Lao. That guy can pull off 70% combos in corners if you have the skills properly.

However, I have yet to meet one Kung Lao.

I feel like teleporters and sindel will be best. Sindel because she has amazingly fast projectiles and can actually zone in this game and teleporters because they can handle Sindels projectiles

I don’t know about that. Personally I feel Lao,Nightwolf, and Raiden are a bit above everyone else. Kabal I think is a bit underrated also.

Lao has some retarded dmg output and great options (spin …).

Raiden has a great anti-air (EX Shock), solid combo’s and his teleport is nigh instant. Very hard to react to and almost impossible to punish on reaction.

Nightwolf has amazing priority/range, solid projectiles, and he laughs at all other zoning in the game.

Kabal shut’s down pretty much everything when he has EX meter to the point it’s a bit disturbing to be honest. You can’t zone him and you can’t jump without putting yourself at considerable risk. He’s really solid upper-mid at least.

Of the ninja I think smoke might be the best but not 100% on that. Ermac seems solid but his mixup is weak and he is forced to rely a lot on forcepush which I’m not sure will be a tactic that survives at high level.

The game has been officially out for only 2 days but you already know this.

Your right on the money Sephiroth, but I would add Smoke to the higher tiered list, simply because he’s got a really good teleport, invisibility, a projectile that almost always equals 20+ percentage in damage, and he’s not as easy as he should be to punish.

As far as like bottom of the barrel, I’d assume it would be Sheeva. Though, I don’t really think she’s as bad as people think. She’s got several unblockable moves, and a few unblockable throws that equal a nice chunk of damage. Her high and low mixups are also pretty good, and she can fireball war long enough to setup her drop bomb.

Personally, I can’t rate her too low, cause she can rip your arms off and kill you with them and thats beyond hilarious.

I use Kabal, and I agree that he is stupidly good, but he doesn’t have good enough high low mixup potential up close, and he gets damage scaled so hard on his dash move that its difficult to put him in the higher end of things.

If I had to give it a hierarchy:

Teleporters > Capture move specialists (Kabal, Cyrax, Saibot, etc) > Zoners > Strikers > Grapplers.

Don’t forget that Smoke also has a projectile counter which, along with his teleport, makes him impossible to zone.

I think that Ermac is better than smoke. His moves are too fast to have as much range as they have.

Its easy to overlook cuz hes so popular but im having a tough time justifying guys over scorpion. teleporter, easy 40% combos, air throw, hes just got alot of tools.

Balance is good. No ridiculous combos from what ive gathered maybe a few corner issues with some strings being a bit over the top but thats what breakers are for.

Pretty balanced. quite surprised at this, they did a good job on this game. i’d say the balance is a bit better than ssf4, not a whole lot better but better

i actually believe the strikers are better than the “capture” lot, Cage & Wolfs wakeup enhanced moves are safe on block (not to mention fast & cover full screen) unlike some of the other guys, like Kabal, Sector…& a lot of them are way too slow (Sub Zero, Noob, Quan)
all characters can do a lot of damage though, so i think we’ll see a lot of variety

i think the tiers will boil down to this:
1.fast/safe teleport
2.wakeup move
3.damage potential

The game hasn’t been researched enough to give any accurate idea of ballance. Though I will say that I think MK accomplish ballance in “rules of engagments”. Their seems to be a ballance attributes of offense and defense. As in teh game doesn’t cater to style of play (how ever characters may apply them differently).

As for characters, The only thing people are noticing are damage and tools aplications. But I do feel some are weighting characters abilities ineffectivly. People seem to rank linear characters high while abstract characters low.

I agree with this for the most part. I think the combination of the ability to pressure the opponent with rushdown as well as play zoning/far away pressure will what make the best characters stand out. If a character is only good at one he will have some trouble.

My fav character is Johnny Cage and his options fullscreen are nearly non-existant. The reason this is so bad is that the length of stages is much longer than any other fighting game i’ve played, allowing people to run away in one direction for a long time if you don’t have a teleport to threaten them with. He essentially can forceball (okay dmg, 1% lower than some other characters) or EX shadow kick (from near full screen), or just dash-block in. This is even worse if the enemy can teleport in on you obviously, keeping it a threat to you even while you are attempting to get in.

Hard to tell. SF4 felt unbalanced too, until i learned how to properly counter stuff.
All I can say, there is no crazy unbalance at the first look.

I don’t know if ermac is higher than smoke. He seems to either win or lose in a lot of matches for me so far (I’m maining him). He seems to have 3 kinds of matchups.

  1. You have your matchups where people have laughably easy answers to your zoning game that lead to favorable dmg for them and you just lack the mixup to really make up for your destroyed zoning game. Ala your Smoke and imo shang tsung (his fireballs really wreck any attempt to zone him as they trade unfavorably).

  2. They don’t have consistent answers so it become a staring contest for ermac because he just wants to use random force push to keep them back, bait something he can teleport punch into a 50/50 throw or mid mixup, or bait anti-projectile into big dmg. Your Kabal, Mileena, teleport punch characters.

  3. They have no real answer to your zoning so you forcepush and anti-air them until they throw their controller in frustration. Ala your Jax and Sheeva.
