Nobody ever said it’s the “sole” reason. But religion (which is simply a specific form of tribalism) is a factor that makes good people to take part in horrible things. Imagine that a tribe in Africa exists where they have a tradition where they cut off every baby’s left toe after birth. It would seem horrible to you, and it should, but circumcision also involves needlessly cutting off body parts from babies and society seems to have no problem with that.
That is the problem with religion- It makes the “bad” seem “not bad” in your brain. In the same way that circumcision is normalized in the west, so is killing your own daughter for commiting adultery in other societies.
Some people get lung cancer without smoking, but does that fact magically change the damage that smoking DOES do?
Religion is pretty much non-existent in the world these days, yet there is more violence and more oppression that ever before. You have a very child-like simpleton view of how the world really works.
While it is undeniable that there have been lunatics who’s actions where rooted due to distorted religious beliefs, it does not mean that the world will improve if people became atheists. Since when has Atheism contributed more than religion in terms of charity work? I’m not saying that people with out a religion are incapable of doing good but the point is lacking a religion does not decrease any crime rate at all. Go to some high crime area like Camden or St Luis and ask how many of the “gangstas”, drug lords, and sluts have a religion/believe in a god? I can bet my money that the majority of them don’t or just don’t give a shit if a god exists or not.
If people do become atheistic then gradually what people view as evil (such as murder) becomes just a point of view. If i killed somebody who the fuck are you to tell me that i am evil for doing it? Eventually, our universe will one day burn up into nothing, hense everything in the past or present will eventually have no matter so really why should i give a shit about what you (a person who will one day just die like everyone else) think about how my “morality” should be in acceptable ranges? Yes the counter argument is “well what if this guy says he is doing it because his god says so… who are you to tell him he is wrong”… simply due to the lack of any evidence that his god is actually telling him this and the fact that there is visible counter evidence in their scripture to tell them they are wrong. Again, i’m not saying that anybody of a lack of religion is incapable of doing good BUT a lack of religion will not make the world better.
People do things based on how they were raised… some people took several substances that destroyed their brain cells and made them lunatics, or some people were in a severe state of emotional/mental instability and got influenced by a bad person who brainwashed him with religious lies so that person can become a pawn.

So existence of god is the only thing that prevents you from being nihilistic and sociopathic? I don’t think most people are like that. Some have abnormal brains, but MOST people were developed by evolution to not rape and murder the people around them.
The bible says we should kill gays, so how did it happen that one day people decided “Hey maybe we shouldn’t kill gays!”
Seems like people ARE capable of making moral decisions, and these would be improved once you remove religious and traditional barriers.
I will repeat, a lack of religion does not mean a person is incapable of doing good however an increase of atheism is not going to bring the world to a better place. Whether you like to accept it or not, the belief in a god has a better chance in preventing evil due to fear.
Even the great Deist Philospher, Voltare stated: ‘If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him’… reasons why is because the fear of god creates a policeman thought than any wrong i do, even if it is something small as telling a lie, i will eventually get my assed burned in hell regardless if i somehow escaped the law. If there was no god and a person manages to escape the law he/she has nothing to worry about, does he? The logic is, if i have no fear of a high moral lawgiver why the hell should i give a shit about what you think is good or bad with the deeds i’ve done?
