Honest question about picking high tiers

Simple if your playstyle clashs with the strategies that make the top tier character good, you aren’t going to good with him/her, for example if someone keeps trying to rush down with Nu in Blazblue they won’t get as far no matter how “top tier” she is since they aren’t playing on what makes her top tier.

You have to “click” with a character to play them well, to be able to understand and utilise their strengths and weaknesses.

Also matchups > tiers, if you have an even or good matchup against a top tier character then that character being top tier really doesn’t have any effect on you.

yeah! that’s why I stick with Akuma!

Personally, I don’t necessarily play to win, I play to learn. ((The exception is at tourneys, then I play to win)).

My goal when I play every casual match, is first, to learn something. That can be applying a technique in a new way, or discovering a better way to deal with a certain situation. I want to win the match, and I’ll definitely do everything that I can once I’m in the match…but my focus is on becoming a better player, as an active process.

So yeah, if my ONLY goal was to win as many matches as possible, then sure, I’d abandon Chun/Dictator and I’d play Akuma, Sagat, Ryu, or Boxer.

But my goals are slightly different. I want to become the best player I can be, with the characters that I find the most fun. If that means that my choice of characters nets me less wins overall, its something I’m ready to accept.

In fact, I think I could make a strong argument for the idea that being forced to play around a character’s weaknesses (mid tier all suffers from at least one major weakness, while top tier has no major weaknesses and tools for every situation) makes you a better player, because you are forced to really outthink your opponent, as opposed to relying on a universal “get out of jail free” tool like the almighty DP or akuma’s teleport.

People who use mid/low tier characters decided to use high tier characters would beat the shit out of people who play high tier characters.

Unfortunatly not. Are you totally disregarding the fact that the high tier player has been training with that character for a long time? Like some random chun player could go into a match and beat Mago? Just because someone picks top tier doesn’t mean they’re bad, it means they’re using the game mechanics to their advantage. The advantage low tier users have is mind games that they NEED to use in order to win, that doesn’t mean that they’re going to suddenly be the best Ryu/Sagat etc player.

Fei Long’s not exactly high tier. Yet JWong did pretty damn good with him.

Fact of the matter here is, you picked him up and are winning. Keep on keepin on. IUf they wanna be low-tier heroes, that’s their problem. if it didnt matter, we’d all be playing random.

Play who you want. That’s it.

If other people have a problem with it they can keep bitching and lose.

don’t listen to those jokers who whine about “tiers”, S-Kill said in one of his domination articles he didn’t start playing chun because he thought she was the best (she wasn’t even close) he played her because he felt best using her. play to your strengths, tiers will ALWAYS be hotly debated, but look at the last evo, how many sagats wre in the top 8? exactly. from one sagat player to another Tiger Destruction them with no qulams!!!

Every one of the evo top 8 was using a character in the top 5 of the current jp tier list. And you only need to look at how many of the top 50 japanese players use Sagat to establish his tier (http://www.versuscity.net/2009/12/17/street-fighter-4-power-players-24/) - 40%!

This is true. I play a little bit of Ryu ( I main Gen) and I do win often as Ryu, but I do not feel as comfortable as I do when I play Gen. I beat Sagat more with Gen that I do with Ryu because of the fact.

Don’t let complainers get in the way of your progress. I personally know a fellow Gen player that flat out refuses to play against Ryu. I think that is a major disservice to himself. He let’s this mentality get in the way. He probably won’t be able to beat average Ryus since he refuses to play against that character. Let’s not even talk about how he would do against Valle.

Rest easy knowing that you won’t be that guy.

i understand what you’re saying, i’m just saying that Sagat isn’t an “instanmt win button” like people make him out to be.

I actually have kind of a hard time winning as Sagat -_-

Tier is a word that is bullshit that people need to stop shitting themselves over (sorry for the language) IMO. Just because you pick Sagat doesn’t mean that you suck, or you are a tier whore. So tell your friend to eat a dick.

Do you like playing Sagat? Do you have fun with him? If you do, then stick with him. IMO he’s not a fun character. But if you don’t, but you want to win, you need to lay off the peyote and get a character that you can enjoy. I was a Zangief player and I was a monster with him. BUT I didn’t enjoy him. That’s why I am transiting to El fuerte, because I have fun with him.

Basically, tell your friend to be quiet. Enjoy playing the game.

Right exactly. If you’re picking Sagat just to win then that’s your choice but I really don’t see the point/fun in it. Pick a character you enjoy, who suits your play style… pretty much the same point everyone’s made throughout the entire thread.

I think I will go with Sagat actually. It seems alot of people play him and he does feel right with me. I used to play shotos in 3S and HD remix, of course I got alot of hate online in HD remix for playing “no skill characters”, but hey, play who you play the best with I guess.
