Hole Cutters

So I just killed this crummy adjustable hole cutter that I bought from menards. I am having the hardest Time finding 24mm and 30 mm hole saws/cutters where have you guys found them or what do you use? Note: We are cutting steel.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t know much about steel cutting with them, but if you check Home Depot they sell hole saws in multiple sizes, and if you are just needing 24mm and 30mm holes, a 1" and 1 1/4" hole saw should cut to the size you need.

Just google “24mm hole saw” or “30mm hole saw.” I tried looking through tools sites first, but google was faster. Some sites are cheaper than sears, but if you need it soon, you might try just walking into the store.

Edit: I’m stupid, it clearly says “online only” right there.

i work with aluminum and steel at work you should be able to find some step-up bits that should do the trick for both but hole saws really only good for sheet metal aluminum. last time i was at ace harware i saw some hole saws.

Just to make a note, hole saws are good for wood too, just very annoying for very thick wood; think about the depth of your hole saw (you can get deep ones for that reason).

Ace is the place

Agreed, got my 30mm hole saw there.

I have no personal experience but I’ve read that 15/16" and 1 3/16" work best!

speaking from personal attempts at using step up bit with those standard measurements the hole sizes are not correct and it is best to go smaller and hand sand out the hole if metric sizes are not available. i found this out working with sheet metal

i dont understand where at these places you guys find exact bits.

i’ve gone to lowes/hd/ace.

only thing i have ever found there are 29mm hole saws.

no one carries 1 3/16 or exact 30mm.

i always end up having to drum sand the hole a few more mm.

i guess i’ll be using sears online

For cutting steel (or rock etc)… You might consider this seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/30mm-PRO-diamond-segment-hole-saw-core-drill-pilot-bit_W0QQitemZ170189849902QQihZ007QQcategoryZ61574QQcmdZViewItem

I haven’t bought from them personally, but I did review his feedback before considering linking you to them.

For everything else, (wood, plexi etc), I use Forstner bits, which these days, are easily obtained online in various sizes. They were recommended to me by a woodworker’s club, when I was facing the conundrum of getting matching-holes cut in the plexiglass.
