Hokuto no Ken made it possible for series like DBZ, Naruto and Bleach to exist because of the over-the-top violence and storyline; the series gets huge praise in Japan to this day, but it gets nothing here because of the lack of marketing, bad dubbing, and an ever-changing fanbase that jumps from one big thing to next, neglecting the true essence of a classic.

Another thing to my understanding if it hasn’t been discussed already: Hokuto no Ken is getting a full revival in Japan with new movies and OVAs and other properties to celebrate its 25 anniversary and to act as an introduction to new fans. Hokuto no Ken joins the likes of Astro Boy, Mazinger Z, & Cutey Honey: The pioneer of a genre. Everything else that’s come after has been either a homage, copy, or inspired work based off the ground-breaking nature of the titles mentioned above. That’s not a knock toward Naruto or Bleach because I respect those titles and their creators as well, but Go Nagai, Tetsuo Hara and Buronsen, and Osamu Tezuka are pioneers. Hell, they changed the anime industry from what it was, some of the titles they made started the anime industry.

They recently released a remastered HnK DVD set for the 80s series. Why can’t they do that in the US? Fuck the dubs; the original voice acting was fucking epic. If they released a subtitled version, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I didnt like SHNK for a few reasons. Mostly because you expect Ken to be much stronger over the years and then he cant punch through some gold bars. The main villain had a cool design but overall was pretty mediocre. I do love the last fight scene with the rising body and “atatataata.” Its prolly the most looped segment of all HnK anime that I’ve watched

I haven’t been following HnK lately.
I’m not really sure what the new movies are suppose to be about. Are they just a retelling of the story crammed into OVAs with better drawings or something?
And are they being released in the US? Or do I have to download them?
Anyways… HnK is one of the best animes of all time… Grew up with this stuff.
Pretty much, but the story focuses on a specific character during its various arcs. It introduces new pov’s and new characters too. The order of the OAV’s are:
Raoh Gaiden (Shuu/Souther)
Yuria Densetsu (Shin, duh/Last Nanto Warrior/Rei)
Raoh Gaiden 2
The Toki arc looks like it’s gonna come out soon and the last one is the one and only Kenshiro.
The soundtrack really is awesome on these movies (yet to see Raoh 2 though) especially Shuu and Yuria’s theme: does anyone know where I can get the chapter tracks off the official website?
Looking forward to the complete boxset, should go nicely with my HnK collection :woot:
