I’m currently writing an article for www.disposablemedia.co.uk (SHAMELESS PLUG) on street fighter and the culture surrounding it.
Few things I’d like to ask for your help with.
What gameplay innovations has the SF series made, even if by mistake (e.g. the combo which was originally a glitch)?
How much play time do you put in every week you stay at the top of your game?
And just how much do you think you spend on it in a year (roughly of course)?
Erm, Anything that you should feel that I should touch upon, but remember, this article has to be “fighter-virgin” friendly afterall
In return I will be putting in some publicity for SRK along with the UK Ranking Battle scene seen as most of our readership is either English or American
Some general innovations that Street Fighter has brought would be the Super Meter (Super Street Fighter II Turbo), Custom Combo (Street Fighter Alpha 2/3), Parrying (Street Fighter III).
A least 2 hours a day worth of practicing for me, probably around 15 hours a week if I have time. In 3S, I use about an hour a day just practicing my parrying.
Over 800 hours a year worth of playing.
Some things you can add are big tournaments such as EVO, SBO, etc.
The first question really should be refined. There have been a ton of innovations in SF covering a broad amount of games (RC in CvS2, Fast Fly/Unfly, various Infinites in MvC2, the rethinking of how mindgames work due to parries, etc…)
Personally I barely play on my own. If I have friends over we can play for 2 - 8 hours without even thinking about it, nevermind things like tournaments which can take days to complete.
Money spent on SF is broad as well. If you go to monthly tournaments you’re probably spending $20 in games, another $10 in food, $$$ in gas and other expenditures. Me personally, I probably spend an average of $50 every month in tournaments alone. Hit at least one major a year for an extra $200 or so and then random shit. Probably $800 - $1000 a year.
If this if “fighter virgin” then I would place an emphasis on the fact that players really need to put in A LOT of time to be “good” at the games they play, nevermind great or top level. I would also enlighten them to the tournament scene and how it drives players to be better.

It varies wildly. The pickin’s in my area are so slim that practice is really unnecessary at this point. If I’m having trouble with an opponent in an arcade, I just adapt on the spot, rather than going to the trouble of devising new tactics in my free time. If I play at home, it’s basically for shits and giggles, or to dick around with characters that I’d never actually use in a real match.
You can quote me on that last part.
Anywhere from about $50 to $60 a year, in quarters. I don’t enter tournaments since they’re a rarity in this area, and their occurence rarely coincides with me having enough spare cash to hit the road and enter.
I’m not even going to bring console game purchases into this since the last one I bought was CvS2 for the 'Cube… and that was a long-ass time ago.
Tell the kids to go outside and play instead of wasting their lives on the crap they call videogames these days. The little fatasses need exercise anyway.
Uh, you can quote me on that part too.
If you really wanted to do something for us in return, you’d put in some girly pictures.
