That’s not hypocritical. The gem system is forced into main gameplay while this is a side mode. Admittedly, we don’t really have enough info on the gem system to pass full judgement, but this feels like a much better way to implement a system like this. It also just seems more fun.
this reminds me of Subspace Emissary, except in actual outer space. lol. if it has a story angle to it, it’ll be a lot of fun, especially since now you can parry.
Why would anybody be concerned about anything in this mode? It’s completely optional.
Hoping SFxT’s Gem Mode will be an option, too. I recall requesting more options in fighting games and people hated it. Well it looks good now, does it? (reply to nobody in particular, but you know who you are lol)

Not only this but it’s already been revealed that some of the Gems, part of the core balance of SFxT, are going to be paid DLC. There’s even a set of 9 gems only available through the special edition. We don’t know enough about the system itself to comment on it, but forcing players to dump money in order to stay competitive is horseshit.

It is kind of interesting how the UMVC3 board opinion of this is a total 180 compare to SxTK uproar over gem. Then again, seem like SXTK got the raw end of stick so far this NYCC in general. Granted, we know for a fact this is just a side mode, and, a fun looking one of that! That trailer totally sold me once I seen Iron Fist go straight up “Fuck yo Beam!” mode. It’s going to be real cool to take a breather with it when the inevitable regular mode salt finally kicks in. >>
I’m complaining because in the development period resources were spent developing Koryu edition, instead of on the game itself. Had this been in development post release I wouldn’t give a damn.
Systems, modes, and art designers are not the same as character and balance designers. Few resources if any are being diverted from the core game, the people working in this bonus mode would have just been sitting on their thumbs otherwise.

Mode looks extremely fun, hopefully it can last long, kind of like Smash’s Subspace Emissary mode.
I hadn’t realized the developers of Heroes and Heralds were unaffiliated with UMvC3 and worked for free.
I honestly love this mode simply because its free DLC, it gives you things to do with characters, you get a collection mechanic in, and itll be great for just messing around with friends. Not part of the main game but completly awesome and free=Heroes and Heralds. Part of the core gameplay that also has Pandora mode that nobody is liking at all=Gem System
But even then Melee is 100 times more entertaining to watch than Brawl with items.

Hmmm, too bad the system isn’t 3 cards per character, and with some restrictions based on character (like no teleport cards for characters that can teleport).
Seeing as this is an extra mode though, doesn’t really matter but still.
We shall enjoy our x-factor 3, berserker rage wolverine with speed up, super armor and teleport cards!
The team of one may be that you get no assists though. If you see the video, both times during they showed Zero he did not have any assists available. It seems to be the same zero so even if you Team Hyper you would only have that one character doing the special.
Also they’d all be doing maximum anyway in the exact same pattern at surely the same speed.
'Sides they’d all be fighting the same but he’d have no assists.
So in the end, not that scary.
It would be totally awesome if the cards had effects like this.

Juggernaut- Super armour on certain moves (heavier hitting, slower moves).
Jin- Random clothing explosion of awesome! (acts as a mega crush, aesthetic effect is permanent).
Roll- Clean up (removes all traps from field).
Gambit- Random effect card (a random effect will be chosen from a list at the start of the match which can range from a very powerful buff or nerf depending on luck).
Dimitri- Midnight blisses opponent for at start of the match for a short period of time (opponent’s damage in state is slightly reduced as well as damage resistance).
Dan- Taunting with player character restores meter, character costume turns pink, Otoko Michi super granted (750k damage level 3 raging demon style grab that will drain almost all the player characters life on hit).
Servbot- Player character’s size decreases (character’s attack range is still the same).
Nova- Player Character will never stop yelling, slight increase to attack power.
Mango Sentinel- Commentator changed to Yipes (IT’S MAHVEL BAYBEE!!!).
The Thing driving the Bat-mobile- Commentator changed to Stan Lee (EXCELSIOR!!!).
Ken- All player characters dragon punch motion moves gain extra invincibility (even more extra invincibility if move is actually a dragon punch).
Sagat- All player characters projectiles are 150% faster.
Ryu- Player character only speaks gibberish, may cause stun state on opponent after combos.
Akuma- Akuma will randomly appear and in the background and blow the crap out of something causing debris to fly everywhere, for no reason other than he felt like it, debris can hits your opponents for good damage.
Shuma Gorath- censored
