Help with Keio Saturn to PS1 Adapter

I built my own adapter, but I can’t seem to get it to change controller layouts through button presses as the page says. Does anyone have this problem? It’s stuck on mode B, where L is Select.

I am not familiar with this kind of controller adapter, at first I though you need a firmware update.
But I do not see how to do so with there stock Saturn to PSX adapter. Do your DIY adapter might have some way to connect to a PC?

Did you LOOK On the Keio page to see if there were FAQ’s or a firmware revision you needed to download???

Hello? => http://keio.dk/retroadapter.html

Why don’t you look and see if your problem is covered on that webpage OR if you made a mistake assembling the adapter.

Most of us DO NOT own these adapters… The majority of the converters were sold probably 3-4 years ago. Probably not a huge market for them, either, seeing as there were commercially available converters sold throughout Asia for years before the Keio’s and most of the people who wanted those things already bought them. Many converters never had a microprocessor to handle button layouts and it was up to the player to open up and redistribute disconnect wires OR reprogram their button assignment in-game for the button layout they wanted in-game.
That’s how I handled button assignments with my PSX/PSX2->Saturn converter. Only six 30mm buttons were supported and I had to redistribute wiring for six and reassign buttons in-program there, too. It was all wiring; no PCB rerouting that I could see.
I remember seeing the Keio developer’s thread about these things. You might also want to look for the Keio thread on SRK and see if you can find the information you need to solve your problem, too.
I have my doubts about whether he’s still making these things. Third parties seem to come and go on the boards and many of these guys really don’t say when they discontinue support/stop making a product and few of them ever come back after they’re done. Products often live on without much comment from the developers. Toodles, for instance, still has production of the Cthulu PCB’s and their secondary PCB supports, but you rarely if ever see him online this past year. What’s available is what’s available… You will probably never see anything out-of-stock come back again.

Only other thing is that if it’s PS1 and NOT the PS3 that the converter supports, I don’t know how much help you’re going to get here RIGHT NOW. Retro-support goes through very brief periodic cycles… most of the people here are playing on the latest systems – PS3/PS4, XBox 360/One – and not a 20-year-old console.

People are generally concerned about the PS1 games themselves and NOT the system… The system’s been emulated to death and been supported through 2 successive generations of console with backwards compatibility for the game discs themselves and not necessarily the PS1 controllers although the pads and joysticks at least seemed to work on both the PS2 and PS3 (with USB adapter).

Paul is not making any more. He’s been out of it for a while. He stopped due to arthritis, which is a really shitty reason that makes me sad.

Spacemonkeyfromthefuture does them now. I do not believe it is the same mod. I have not bought one of these from him, but I do have his PC Engine mod and I will attest to the quality of his work. He was very friendly when we spoke. He could probably get you something that matches your needs if you can’t get where you are trying to be.

Toodles is apparently on a hiatus due to a bad breakup. Not fun either. James aka jdm714 is working on school. It sucks to see all of these cool people fall off.

FYI,

If you think I was being snarky, I was trying hard NOT to be…

I know what it’s like to own an old console and see little to no technical support for it. Whether it’s the controllers or the system itself.
The manufacturers NEVER expected any of these systems to last 20 years and frankly thought there would not be enough of a userbase left after new consoles were introduced to keep support up… and they’ve been right for the most part.
It still leaves people up the creek when they have favorite games that don’t make the leap to new generations of consoles. There are still fighting games from the PS1/Saturn era that have never been ported to the newer systems that are excellent. Unless you have a working PC emulator that supports these games OR an ancient working console, you can’t play these games any other way.
My favorite console happens to be the Sega Saturn which LOST to the PS1. I owned both at the same time but guess which one I ultimately kept?

PS owners are in a more fortunate position. Your consoles have been the most consistently popular for close to twenty years now and the support is generally a LOT better than most other systems including the XBox’s which are next closest to popularity of the PS systems.

I DO own several PS2’s and one PS3. I am experiencing possible laser lens issues with at least one PS2 right now. Since I have two back-ups, I’m in no particular rush to get it fixed straightaway… BUT that system is no longer made and there’s a limited supply of spares for it. I’d hate to buy a used PS system (always the worst thing to do at any rate; Sony and MS used systems are a dicey proposition at best) when the laser lens replacement is still within reasonable buy price for me. I also have a laser lens issue with a Dreamcast that’s been that way for years now. I pretty much figured out that’s what it was since the motor still works on the CD drive and onscreen messages say the disc isn’t recognized or is not a valid game disc – same thing the one PS2 is displaying, too!
