Hi!
I’m an old school SF2 player. Played it non-stop in the arcades for years in high school and college.
About 10 years ago, many years after I stopped playing in the arcades, I hired someone over the internet to build me some arcade sticks for use with MAME. I tried my best to research what type of sticks I liked when playing in the arcades but it was difficult to describe and guess. I knew that I preferred sticks where I could FEEL the corners, and not sticks that felt smooth all the way around (I hated when I played on a machine with those). At the time the guy that built my sticks recommended, I believe, Happ sticks and I think that’s what I got.
Well, I liked the controls in general but pretty much hated the sticks. They feel, to me, smooth all the way around so I have a hard time finding the corners. I’d like to do something about that because I have a reignited interest in setting up a good MAME system here.
After some research I THINK I want something with an octagonal gate. I wonder if I might have played on a square gate, but since I am from the US it seems octagonal is more likely. I’d know it if I felt and played it, but that’s hard for me to do.
From what I can tell I cannot install a gate on my Happ sticks. Does that seem correct? If not, I’d like to replace my sticks with something I would prefer.
Anyone have any recommendations on sticks/gates? Recommended vendors to buy from?
