Help countering Trish

OK… I have finally figured out my one and main weakness in this game.

Seriously, it’s like Trish was made to completely counter me.

OK wait I’ll breathe for a bit before starting to type, I’m still mad salty from earlier.

OK. So earlier I went to the custom cab arcade near my school that has UMvC3 in it. This fortunately means that there’s a decent amount of competitors in there. This means that it’s an offline setting, so yeah.

There are 2 players there that seem to demolish me the most. One is running a Trish(Y)/Viper(Hammer)/Dormammu(Dark Hole), the other one is a Trish(Y)/Viper(Hammer)/Doom(Missiles).

I’m not salty about the Weskers, Spencers, Vergils (salt-inducing status arguable) and Zeros… in fact I can handle them all pretty well now. My problem is that glaring Trish, who seems to be the perfect counter to everything I have about this game.

First up, my teams are:
-Felicia(B)/Strider(Y)/Amaterasu(B)
-Nova(B)/Felicia(A)/Amaterasu(B)
-Felicia(B)/Amaterasu(B)/Doom(A)
-Amaterasu(B)/Strider(Y)/Doom(A)

Contrary to popular belief, Vajra isn’t exactly a foolproof way to scare Trish. Placing both traps and hiding under them seriously thwarts anything that comes near her, and Vajra is no exception. My best characters would be Felicia and Amaterasu, where Trish actually counters both pretty well.

As such I’m pretty much forced to take a risk and find loopholes in the Trish plays… this has been going on for more than a month and I still can’t figure out how to get through this. Trish’s zoning and air capabilities completely shut down Felicia, while dive kick + its ability to be canceled into a special and then dive kick again nullified Ammy’s game. Amaterasu and Felicia also has insanely wide horizontal hitboxes, making dive kick, ground trap, and Low Voltages even more potent.

All people tell me are “YOU HAVE VAJRA USE IT” and I for the love of god keep telling them that “IT DOES NOT FUCKING WORK” especially that Missile backup also knocks Strider out of the air as well, while Dark Hole shuts down my point character and allows Trish to hide in her traps, therefore disallowing Vajra to actually even hit.

I fact I got TRIPLE PERFECTED before I left earlier, leaving me mad salty. Of course because of the matchups, it’s actually a ToD-fest as almost everyone on the field have <900k health. But it’s the fact that I can’t even get a freaking hit on Trish. When I do, I just X-factor out of frustration and kill her IMMEDIATELY, SHE’S JUST THAT MUCH OF A PROBLEM… and then the Viper players come in with their insane throw potential costing me the match because of the X-Factor not being used to take out Viper too (usually ends up being a 1v1 with me losing due to lack of XF). I can regularly take out Viper though, so I’m OK with that.

It’s just… god damn it, Trish. I was on the verge of punching glass earlier but fortunately I’m level headed enough to not do that. Plus it was an offline setting, I don’t want to embarrass myself in public (duh).

Anyway this is becoming my major problem. I’m also attending my first tourney coming in 2 weeks, and I’m expecting all kinds of matchups there. I’ve already solved my problems with Hulk, Ghost Rider, and Captain America (though they’re still giving me quite some problems, but not as much as Trish does), and a lot of teams utilizing so much other stuff, and for the life of me I’ve already lost so much hair trying to counter Trish.

I’m also working on countering a Nemesis-Wolverine-Akuma team too as that’s just orz, but I think I’m getting the hang of it and seeing where the holes in that team lie, and hit it there…

…sorry for the long post, but I am SERIOUSLY still salty right now. I am asking with as much politeness as I can right now for help.

EDIT: I just saw Trolling with Trish. Lesser known facts right now and I CAN’T COUNT HOW MANY TIMES I’VE SEEN THE SHENANIGANS HERE APPLIED TO ME.

EDIT2: I’ve also read somewhere where the guy said “It’s like when people go up against Trish, they just forget how to block.” I can’t understand why this is becoming true. Trish has so much offensive options, she’s seriously an underrated character that needs to at least merit top 10 I swear.

I main Trish and most of my wins are OCVs with Trish. Not going to lie, she’s very good and can be very difficult to catch. Here’s what I recommend against her:

  1. You have to be super patient. When Trish is above you, don’t blindly attack. Chances are you’re going to run into traps, dive kicks, or fireballs and these can quickly add up. Wait for her to come down before you engage and use your Strider assist to keep her out of the air.

  2. Respect the traps, especially hopscotch. Peekabo is easy to destroy but hopscotch isn’t going anywhere and will interrupt your combos if you ignore it.

  3. Make your one hit count. She’s low health so one combo should kill her.

  4. Do not block dive kick. She has too much frame advantage after it and you will be in a mixup situation. Dodge it and whiff punish.

  5. Remember, she can’t block after her air super.

  6. Okami shuffle punishes pretty much anything Trish does in the air.

  7. Ammy’s melee counter is very good against Trish who just abuse dive kick at close range.

  8. Ammy and Felicia both have way better throw range than Trish.

Yeah, I’ve been playing with Trishes for a while and found that defensive play with Amaterasu actually is the way to go; in the air she can just lay traps and fire crap at me, and if I stay on the ground I don’t really care. Distancing and trying to stay in her un-comfort zones seems to be the only way to go, stalling out until she makes a mistake/whiffs something. I’m more daring to throw out that random Okami Shuffles and wait with a beam assist ready.

She’s still pretty hard to take out, but at least I can manage. Her disgustingly huge damage output still bothers me though… or maybe it’s because I play Ammy too much  lol

Ammy vs Trish is weird, you just need to be really patient. Vajra DOES shut down trish’ zoning game, because it makes her have to respect that she can’t just super jump and throw traps, vajra will catch her out of the air for doing it. Doom missiles can counter vajra depending on timing, but that just means you need to play youre assists smarter. If he’s about to call doom, wait until the missiles are up to call vajra. Block the missiles, use the hitstun/blockstun from the vajra to get in a little bit, i suppose.

though what everyone else has said is ultimately true, if you force trish to whiff a divekick its over. a good trish will try to not let that happen but everyone makes mistakes, you just gotta look out for it. Otherwise, I’ve played against ammy players who just sit there with the projectile counter up to force me to come to them, and then abuse the fact that one of my best offensive options can be blocked high or low. Obv. trish can cancel the divekick into a special to try and blow you up for it though, so thats probably not the best idea.

She’s probably one of the most well rounded chars in the game IMO, she has every tool anyone would ever need in this game and she can play any matchup however she wants (Save for a few characters… deadpool/hawkeye) you just need to play against her patiently and wait for her to make a mistake.

Also, okami shuffle.

I don’t personally think Ammy v Trish is as bad for ammy as people say it is, but I could just have been playing the matchup wrong. Which is very possible, there isnt a lot of ammy around where I play

Hey, my main team is Akuma/Dorm/Dante or Ammy. I fought a Trish today and lost 10-0. Is there any hope for my team or should I start counter-picking? If so, what would be the counter-pick closest to my primary team?

Dorm/Dante are already great matchups against Trish. If you really wanted to counterpick, take out Akuma and use Strider (vajra). You’re team is already fine as is, what did they do that gave you so much trouble.

Well, Trish sat at the top of the screen throwing projectiles, and would occasionally throw out a random dive kick into a combo/mixup. Before she jumped, she always called Plasma Beam or Missiles, so I didn’t get a good chance to even throw out a Purification tower. I may run Dante/Dorm/Strider as my anti-Trish, though. Biggest issue with me versus Trish is that Akuma can’t get anything going against her, so Dorm comes in at a disadvantage.

Trish is such a pain in the ass for me. I can even deal with a Zero or Captain America of similar skill, but Trish is so hard to hit for Akuma.

For Dante, if they are using plasma beam, then Trish has no cover when throwing traps/fireballs. Anticipate her throwing one of them, teleport, j.S. If timed right, she can’t block it and must xf to save herself. This is if you are at the far end of the screen diagonal to her. You can also dash in to the range where her fireballs wont hit you (but also not so close that you get hit by her ground trap). From there, get ready to jam session any dive kicks. If they are using missiles, that could protect her in the air, however you can use Dorm in that case. Pillars will mess her up at super jump height. You shouldn’t be losing to her shooting fireballs at you. If the matchup is played properly, Trish needs to rush dorm down to prevent being kept away by pillars. To counter her divekick, throw out a carpet and stay near it. She dives into that, its a free combo for you.

I don’t play Akuma, so not much I can say. I think if you HAD to use Akuma to fight Trish, you have to be patient (don’t run into fireballs and traps all day) since she can keep away better than Akuma can catch her. If you block a divekick, go for a throw. If you chicken block a divekick, fall with a few L’s. Use that palm move in the air to alter your trajectory and hit her out of something into a ground bounce. Don’t forget air grab, if you frighten a Trish closeup and you know they are going to superjumpp away to build distance, chase after them with a grab. If they try any fireball or trap during the jump the grab will come out faster all they can do is tech it.

Both dorm and dante can just anti air Trish players who randomly dive kick without an assist covering them or canceling into a special with s.M. It’d be a bit harder for dante since his normals got a tad slower but it’s still possible.

Unless Trish puts a peekaboo trap at the top of the screen with her (or has an assist such as missiles), Dante can teleport on her for free and punish anything she throws out up there and die from said punish.

Dorm by himself can handle Trish. Dorm with doom missiles or Vajira assist is easily one of Trish’s worst nightmares. She has to rush dorm down either way but if dorm gets started, Trish pretty much will die from taking too many risks, or chip.

For akuma, you can literally just do super jump air Tatsu if she’s camping at the top right of the screen. Unless she supers, Akuma’s tatsu eats all versions of low voltage (they have shitty durability and the M/H versions take too long to come out.) IIRC his tatsu also eats peekaboo durability and still has some left to smack trish. It’s not nearly as 1 sided like Dorm and Dante, but Akuma makes it so you can take a bit more risk for a random hit>super or to show that she has to respect akuma to some extent.
