Hello community, I'm new and I have questions

It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally found a fighter I feel I can invest some effort in to. Every other fighter just felt ridiculously intimidating because of big factors, like roster size or learning curve. SG feels kind enough to get in to yet deep enough to get crazy over, which is great! The tutorial mode helped out a LOT too, I finally understand mixups!

So, hi everyone! I’m The Last Milletian, I’m casually experienced in Tekken (Xiaoyu/Asuka/Jun), Melty Blood(Kohaku/Koha+Hisui/i played everyone at least once), and to a (much) smaller extent Guilty Gear (Jam), BlazBlue (Litchi/Noel/Kazama), and SSF4 (Ibuki). Nice to meet you all, and I hope we get along!

I would post this in the newbie section but these questions are more focused on SG so I figured it’d be more appropriate to drop them here.

I’ve picked up Filia mostly because I played her extensively in the demo and I can’t play grapplers. Is Filia a basic character to start off with before I try out everyone else? Are any of the other characters basic too?

To that extent, I’m kind of worried with my team. Right now, I play Filia alone mostly because I’m still learning her and using multiple characters confuse me. I keep reading that not-solo teams are the way to go, but learning another character seems very confusing. Should I work on getting a second character eventually or is solo Filia viable?
I considered splashing an assist for the sake of having an assist and hopefully never using her (like how I roll my Kohaku+Hisui in MB), but I figured the boosted ratio for soloing would be better than having an assist for a character I’ll struggle using once Filia gets taken out.

Try learning basic Cerebella stuff(not hard, you can do it, I believe in you), then using Cerecopter assist with Filia. Also welcome   :D!!!OMFG ILY<3 SUPA KAWAII :3

i personally think Filia is a great character to learn. She’s a solid character, but then everyone in this game is a solid character cus RL tried to balance the hell out of the cast. Anyways, if you like fast rushdown, then Filia is up your ally with the fastest instant air dash in the game.

Filia is one of the simpler characters to learn so she’s definitely a good start. Ms. Fortune is pretty simple on the most basic level (she gets pretty complex if you throw in the head games).

The Cerebella suggestion is another good one. Mike went out of his way to make sure that the grappler doesn’t have stupid technique barriers for beginner level players so you can really jump right into her.

How in the world do you do 360 motions, anyway? I mean, yeah, duh, you do a full circle, but you’re pressing 7/8/9, which means you jump. How do you stay on the ground for that stuff?

Also I’ll look at Ms. Fortune. I like her as a character mostly because I love cat(girl)s. -w- I’m hoping I can play her!

That’s one of the stupid technique barriers that Mike removed, actually! In this game if you start your circle at a horizontal position the game will detect that you are attempting to do a 360 and take away your ability to jump while you are doing the motion. This allows you to do the 360 as slowly as you need.

This isn’t the case in other games but hopefully it’ll become an FG standard.

I need to try this. Right now.

Edit: Holy crap that is AWESOME
although might take some getting used to

I think starting off with solo to learn the character is a good option, you can do that with the next one you want to include on the team till you’re comfortable trying a duo or you can just jump in with both.

The easiest way to do a 360 I found is to treat it like a half circle that you continue to the up position (3/4 circle), you don’t need to go full circle.

if you don’t know what to do with Bella use QCB+throw lol =]
Do not forget that ALL throw damage is recoverable (leaves red life) so if your opponent have spare character he will restore it eventually… That’s the moment where you want to use outtake MWA-HA-HA!!! >=]

In other games, characters have a thing called “Pre-jump” frames, which is the initial animation of your jump that can be cancelled by a special at any time. In SFIV, Zangief has 6 pre-jump frames. This is more than most characters. This means you have 6 frames to activate a special after you hit 7, 8 or 9 before you jump. Despite still being grounded for the purposes of specials, you’re still considered airborn for the purposes of avoiding throws and junk.

In Skullgirls, everyone has the same pre-jump frames, but Mike Z stuck in that 360 standing dealie-doo to offset it for you.

I would make a team of 2 to start with so you can get used to calling assists as well as DHC. Try Peacock/Filia or Valentine/Filia.

What’s DHC?

Delayed Hyper Combo. It’s where you do your first character’s super and then during the animation for that you do the input for your next character’s super. This will tag in your next character, who will start up using her super. With the right synergy they will combo into each other (most supers will do this but there are always exceptions), allowing for a safe tag in.
