Hell On Wheels

I think that series of events could have played out differently or even be tweaked a bit.

Spoiler

Regarding the German Butcher:
[]An extra scene where Bohannon was seen leaving the butcher’s shop (after telling the butcher to leave town) by the McGinnes Bros prior to them “meat-ing” out justice would have been interesting, I think.
[
]Bohannon could have escorted the butcher to the train for his departure as the McGinnes Bros were going over to mete out justice, which probably would have been less interesting compared to the slaughter event.
What’s done is done though.
Maybe the incident affects the brothers’ relationship later on down the line in a future episode?

It’s all about The Swede starting shit and getting up in everyone else’s business, lol.

Just started watching this. Watched a bit of season 2 with my bro, and I was like damn, this is some good shit. Surprised this show is still relatively unknown considering how well it delivers

I was hoping for zombies…but finding it was a straight semi-historical drama…meh. I’m sure it’s great for what it is, but coming off The Walking Dead…I just couldn’t get into it.

I know. Basically I went into it with the wrong expectations. Also, zombies.

I agree. As stark and depressing as it is, the show actually is quite good and reminds you that the past sucks!
[]Hawkins and his group are planning a heist for the payroll at town. Reports of Bohannon being alive somewhat shocks the group, especially Doc. As the group prepares to ride into town, Doc wishes to tag along but Hawkins tells him to stay back at camp and not to interfere.
[
]The railroad workers continue to work at the gorge site and are successful in raising some support structures.
[]Lily is with Durant and discussing their future plans after the railroad reaches the Pacific. Durant tells her that he’ll probably return to his home in New York but Lily is uncertain about her future after the railroad.
[
]The Swede is working on helping to sober up Cole who pines for a drink even while chained up.
[]Hawkins’ group rides into town and takes their positions according to their plan. At the bar, one of the group harasses Elam with a racial remark as he stops by for a drink. As the two men go back-and-forth with their verbal jabs, Elam notices the sidearm of the Southerner. Hawkins appears and diffuses the situation by leaving with his man and Elam also leaves the bar afterwards.
[
]Elam informs Durant about his observations from earlier (the Southerner’s gun, which was apparently Bohannon’s sidearm(?), and the ‘awkwardness’ of the racial situation) and notes that the arrival of the payroll coincides with their sudden appearance alerts the two men to the possibility of a robbery. Durant arms himself with a pistol and orders Elam to arm whomever is left in town, though Elam tells him only shopkeepers and sick men are present at the time and to send word to Bohannon who is at the gorge site.
[]Elam recruits Sean and Mickey for the task but the two brothers are reluctant to get involved and say that they’re businessmen and not riflemen. He also visits Psalms who is bedridden due to sickness. Psalms apparently doesn’t want to get involved but Elam coaxes him into being a lookout and gives him a rifle.
[
]Hawkins and two of his men enter the railroad office and threaten Durant and Lily at gunpoint and demand the safe with the payroll be opened. Durant draws his gun and shoots one of the men but gets shot in the gut in the process. Hawkins then orders Lily to open the safe or Durant will be finished off.
[]Elsewhere, Elam goes off to arm the Irish brothers and they go to the rifle storehouse but discover that the rifles are missing and tells the Irish to get some firearms at the bar. At another location, Elam and another man overhear the gunshots and he tells the man to send word, via telegraph, to a fort. The man is then shot dead by one of Hawkins’ men who is atop a boxcar and opens fire on Elam who engages him in a firefight. Bohannon is seen riding into town and also gets involved in the gunfight. After dispatching some of Hawkins’ men and rescuing Elam from his predicament, the two men group up to take down the rest.
[
]Amidst the gunfight, The Swede appears to be delighted in joy and tells Cole what is going on and how the situation refers to a ‘prophecy’ of sorts that the men believe in as of late.
[]Lily manages to get the safe open and it is emptied by Hawkins and the men accompanying him. She then goes to Durant’s side as the men leave the office. They engage in a firefight with Bohannon and Elam and one of the men takes off with the payroll in tow and as the rider tries to flee town, Psalms shoots him dead in front of the whorehouse before succumbing to weakness from the sickness and falls down in the street. Money is scattered on the ground as the rider falls off his horse and one of the whores tries to retrieves some of the money but another whore attempts to restrain her and another of Hawkins’ men, who was nearby, shoots one of the whores. The action enrages Sean and Mickey, who open fire on the man and kill him in a barrage of bullets.
[
]Hawkins retreats into the office for a moment to avoid gunfire and Lily who is at Durant’s side, picks up his pistol and shoots Hawkins, which wounds him and sends him outside into the street and struggling to reload. Bohannon fires a shot at Hawkins and also manages to wound him and begins to walk him down. At the moment in which he makes his way over to Hawkins, Lily appears from within the office and says that Durant has been shot. Bohannon pressures Hawkins to reveal Doc’s location to him and after gaining the information he orders Elam to lock up Hawkins in the baxcar/cell.
[]At the boxcar, Hawkins begs for some water. Elam offers some water but spits into the ladle before giving it to the wounded man who reluctantly drinks it after he is locked up.
[
]Bohannon rides out to Hawkins’ camp and finds Doc there, who is somewhat confused in seeing the man that has shown up. He tells Doc that all the men but Hawkins are dead and that someone in town needs medical attention and the two men ride back toward town. Upon returning, Doc begins to work on removing the bullet from Durant and Lily wonders who the man is but Bohannon tells her that all she needs to know is that he (Doc) is a doctor.
[]Outside of the office, Lily wonders about Durant’s condition and Bohannon appears to join her. She then talks about ‘what if’ scenario if Durant had died and Bohannon would be free. Doc then appears and tells the pair that Durant’s condition is dire and beyond his expertise and though Lily suggests that he be treated in Chicago, Doc says that the train ride might kill him. Bohannon pulls Doc off to the side and the two men have some words about how the last ‘job’ and the fact that there wasn’t really a plan to go to Mexico after all and walks off. Doc then goes back into the office and as Durant wakes up, he informs him of the specifics of his injury. Lily then appears inside and Doc recommends the trip to Chicago for treatment after noting Durant’s constitution/will to live.
[
]Bohannon meets Elam outside the boxcar/cell and Elam returns Bohannon’s sidearm to him. The two men retrieve Hawkins and lead him through town, where he is jeered at by the town’s citizens, before arriving at the cemetery in front of an open grave. Bohannon asks Hawkins if he has any last words and he replies saying that Bohannon is a coward who has betrayed his country. Hawkins makes a racial remark toward Bohannon that offends Elam, who in turn shoots Hawkins dead and leaves and afterwards Bohannon kicks the dead man into the open grave.
[]Elsewhere, The Swede cleans up Cole by helping to shave of his beard. Cole wonders why The Swede is helping him out and the Nordic man, who appears quite giddy, leads Cole to a wagon full of rifles and goes into a spiel about God providing divine instruments for the purposes.
[
]At the bar, which is full of townsfolk, Mickey raises a toast to Nell (the whore who saved the other whore), the fallen whore. As Elam walks into the bar, Mr. Toole raises his glass and toasts Bohannon. The barkeep tells Elam to drink somewhere else tonight, who tells him that he’ll be drinking here as usual. However, the barkeep stands up to Elam, saying that he was hiding instead of fighting during the gunfight, to which Elam objects, and manages to get his point across and along with the backing of the other white-folk, Elam leaves the bar.
[]Elam goes to the Negro camp where Psalms is regaling the others with his part in helping to stop the robbery. Psalms initially isn’t warm to Elam’s appearance but after Elam offers a gift of liquor, Psalms distributes it to his group and says that he and Elam will drink the ‘rotgut’ instead. The subject of a future without Durant if he had died comes up and Psalms says that he’d probably go back to Georgia and tells Elam he’d be just a ‘black man in the white man’s world’ if Durant was no longer ‘protecting’ him. Elam notes that the ‘rotgut’ is a bit harsh and Psalms agitates his sickness for a bit after ingesting a cup of the liquid.
[
]Somewhere else, Bohannon is drinking by himself and Lily appears to join him and shows him a telegraph correspondence. Bohannon reads it and says that Hawkins and his men are dead but Lily goes on to say that all of the group will be punished, including Doc, who Bohannon defends saying that his part was minimal. The episode ends with Bohannon dropping the correspondence and appearing disgusted and angry at the news.

I’m up to episode 6 of the first season and the question that is in my head, WHY ISN’T THIS SHOW MORE WELL KNOWN?
This is some grade A+++ material, holy fuck

I’m sad big titty prostitute died, she was the only one I noticed.

I really hope Doc doesn’t have to die, one of the few men on the show with a genuine good heart.

I guess westerns are out and zombies are in.

[]The Swede and Reverend Cole are riding a horse-drawn cart into a grove when all of a sudden they are surrounded by a group of Indians. One of the Indians comes forward and presents The Swede with a wolf pelt and Cole makes a remark of him being the ‘White Spirit’. The Swede then recalls some events after he had been run out of town by the Irish boys and had encountered Yellow Dog (the Indian who presented the wolf pelt) and his group who had saved him. The pair then presents the Indian group with the rifles they had taken and as Cole hands them out, The Swede has an approving grin on his face.
[
]Durant is bedridden and has a vision of himself walking alongside a train track with a small boy who disappears shortly afterwards. Lily informs Durant that his wife will meet him in Chicago. He then begs her to stay and go to Chicago with him but she replies that someone has to watch the railroad.
[]Later, Lily finds Bohannon readying a horse and says that he’s going to find Doc. She thinks that he is going to find him before the train departs for Chicago but Bohannon says that he is isn’t going to let Doc go. Lily reminds Bohannon that Durant had saved him and Bohannon makes a remark about her not needing to sleep in his bed anymore if he dies. Lily goes to slap Bohannon but he restrains her and tells her to calm down and afterwards she storms off.
[
]Bohannon shows Doc the telegram and informs him about the situation regarding the soldiers coming to arrest him. Doc hands Bohannon his firearm and tells him that he is working on atoning for his past and that he’ll accompany his patient to Chicago. Bohannon respects Doc’s decision and tells him to get off the train before it reaches Chicago and Doc agrees to it. Realizing that they may be parting ways for good, Bohannon extends his hand for a handshake and Doc gives his fellow Southerner a hug before departing.
[]Eva goes off to the train that bound for Chicago. Elam tries to stop her but Eva says she’s going along at the request of Durant. Elam then asks when she’ll be coming back but Eva teases about staying in Chicago and dodges answering his repeated query.
[
]Joseph meets with Ruth and informs her of a bible opened up to a particular passage that he found at his beside that morning and the pair wonder about the whereabouts of Cole.
[]As the special train envoy makes it’s way to Chicago, Eva tends to Durant when she suddenly winces in pain. Doc notices that she is pregnant. The train track up ahead of the train is destroyed by and explosion and suddenly comes to a halt. Yellow Dog’s group move in to take the train’s passengers captive and Cole makes his entrance into Durant’s train car wielding a saber and speaking scripture. Cole demands Durant to wire his ‘manifesto’ to New York and appear in a major publication to which Durant refuses but reverses his initial decision due to Eva being threated by Cole.
[
]Back in town, Lily shows Bohannon some telegrams from Durant’s train that contain some peculiar written content. Bohannon recognizes it as the work of a ‘John Brown’ and leaves the railroad office.
[]Bohannon and Elam ride out to the stopped train and see the Indians wielding ‘their’ rifles. He the calls out to the train and Cole answers and asks to talk with him and check on things. After making his way into the train car, Bohannon tries to talk Cole out of doing this but Cole is pretty adamant about seeing this through. As Bohannon departs from the train car, Cole appears with one of the engineers and proclaims “Blood is God.” before running the man through with a saber.
[
]A passenger car is brought up the track and serves as a base for Bohannon’s group. Lily has also come along and with Bohannon and Elam they discuss the situation. Bohannon plans to raid the train car which Lily doesn’t agree with and thinks they can reason with Cole.
[]That evening, while the passengers are captive, Cole and Durant are talking when the subject of being a father comes up. Durant tells Cole about his life: a wife that resents him and a son that died due to cholera. Also, the subject of ideal and legacy is talked about with Durant telling Cole that John Wilkes Booth believed in his cause as does Cole with his and Durant his own as well and the legacies that both men intend to leave behind: the railroad (Durant) and the manifesto (Cole).
[
]Outside of the train, Bohannon and Elam stage a raid. The two men open fire with Cole avoiding a gunshot and the Indians taking gunfire. One Indian who was watching over the captives is shot and wounded and Doc moves to subdue him and is successful with Eva’s help. Cole then goes into the connecting rail car to survey the situation and sees the aftermath of the dead Indian on the floor with Doc. As Bohannon and Elam make their way to the train cars, Cole appears outside threatening Doc with a gun and tells the two men to stand down, to which they comply and back off. Cole returns inside and is angered by the sudden turn of events when Durant reveals that he had lied to him about telegraphing his manifesto to New York, and says that Cole’s fate was sealed when he stepped through the door. Cole then points the gun toward Eva but Doc talks him out of shooting her because she is with child, which causes him to put down his gun and makes him think of wanting to see his own children, Ruth and Joseph.
[]The next day, Bohannon and Elam discuss the turn of events after last night. Bohannon wants to save Doc and Elam wants to save Eva who is carrying his child and the two men talk about Elam’s situation for a bit and about his possibility of becoming a father.
[
]Lily has returned to town to retrieve Ruth and Joseph and informs them of the situation. Though Joseph pleads with Ruth to help her father, Ruth says that he despises her and is reluctant to go along but Lily talks her into going. Once the trio returns to the stopped train, Bohannon announces to Cole about their revival and they are sent in. While Bohannon, Elam, and Lily are waiting outside, a group of Union soldiers ride up to the site shortly afterwards. Bohannon says the situation is under control but their leader says that they are their for Doc, as per The Swedes tip and being a good citizen. Bohannon is angered by The Swede’s involvement and makes a move toward him but he is stopped by the Union soldiers, He tells the ‘interloper’ that “This isn’t over.”
[]In the train car, Cole tells Ruth that he was a bad father to her and commends her on her strength and asks for her forgiveness. Father and daughter share a heartfelt embrace. Joseph then talks to his Cole and asks him to stop his actions but Cole has a different change in demeanor. They seemingly come to terms though and also share an embrace… until Joseph stabs Cole with a knife. Cole falls to the ground, initially clutching at his wound, but then extends his bloody hands upward saying, “This is your legacy.” in his final breath to Joseph who stands over him with a bloodied knife in hand. Ruth rushes to her father’s side crying. Joseph leaves the train car, looks out at the group of people waiting outside, and meets up with Bohannon and presents him with ‘his’ knife before riding off. Doc exits the train car and is greeted by Union soldiers who seize him as Bohannon can only look on.
[
]While the tracks are being fixed and the dead bodies being taken out of the train, Eva and Elam are talking for a bit. Eva tells him that she will still go to Chicago and Elam says that they should talk about things when she gets back.
[]Later on, Bohannon is talking with Doc in the passenger car while under the watchful eye of a Union soldier. Doc talks about his role as a country doctor which involves seeing off people when they ‘go’ and he wants Bohannon to do him this honor. Bohannon tells his fellow Southerner that they can still escape and whatever but Doc has resigned himself to his fate.
[
]Bohannon and Doc then walk up a hill with Union soldiers at their back a short distance away. Doc tells Bohannon a bit about his past and that his sons died in the war and afterwards says that he’s ready. After kneeling down on the ground, and facing away from Bohannon, Bohannon’s resolve is shaken but Doc tells him to be strong. The episode ends with Bohannon shooting Doc and killing him.
[]The Swede undergoes a transformation and becomes the ‘White Spirit’ - He shaves his head and covers his body in white mud/clay and appears before some Sioux Indians who acknowledge him as such.
[
]Lily does her best to assure that Mr. Toole and the other railroad workers that they will be paid despite the condition of Durant, who is currently in Chicago for medical treatment. As the crowd becomes rowdy, Bohannon speaks up and gets the men to go back to the bridge site. Before he leaves, Lily offers her condolences for the loss of his friend, Doc.
[]Bohannon passes by the church tent and goes in to find that Ruth is the only person inside along with Reverend Cole’s body in a casket. Ruth thanks Bohannon for coming to pay his respects. Though he admits some fault in regard to how the situation unfolded, Ruth doesn’t really blame Bohannon for the deaths of Cole and Doc and instead says that those men ‘chose their deaths’ and that some people are beyond redemption.
[
]As Mr. Toole prepares to leave for the bridge site, Elam confronts him and asks the whereabouts of Eva and the situation concerning her baby. It is an uneasy situation between the two men.
[]Sean wants to do something for Ruth regarding the rent situation of the church but Mickey doesn’t agree with it. Elam stops by and note that the Irish boys want to buy the saloon from Carl, the barkeep. He offers his assistance to the brothers and though Seah is reluctant to accept, Mickey accepts without hesitation. Elam doesn’t want much from the deal, save for a percentage of the buyout and a plot of land for himself.
[
]At the bridge site, Psalms regales the other Negros with a tale before Bohannon interrupts and tells them to get back on watch for the Sioux. Psalms defends his actions and even Mr. Toole speaks up for the men but Bohannon has none of it and orders them all back to work regardless.
[]Lily enlists the help of The Swede to make sense of the books in order to be able to pay the workers on time. Bohannon stops by the office and notices that The Swede is there at Lily’s request and he doesn’t like it. As Bohannon goes to leave, The Swede notes a rifle that he has picked up and Bohannon points out that The Swede may have had something to do with the Sioux having access to the firearms they used for Cole’s seizure of the train. Though The Swede attempts to get the last word in, Bohannon’s ‘action’ of hitting the man upside the head with the rifle butt silences him much to the dismay of Lily.
[
]Inside the jail car, The Swede is chained up and Bohannon tries to get the man to admit his involvement in giving the Sioux group the rifles, along with the situation of involving Cole in the whole mess. He even guilt-trips Bohannon with the deaths of Harper and Doc by his own hand and Bohannon almost puts his knife to The Swede as a response but he regains his composure and says he’ll get The Swede to confess to his wrongdoings.
[]Ruth finds the church tent being taken down and Sean informs her that it will be moved to the center of town. He also gives her a land deed to the church property as well.
[
]Elam recruits Psalms for something and at night the two men make their way to the stopped train at a rest point and destroy the shipment of whiskey intended for Carl but not before they partake in some of it for themselves.
[]Bohannon is at the saloon drinking by himself when The Swede joins him with a new bottle of liquor and tells him about his time at Andersonville - and how as a result of that experience he has come to ‘hate’ Bohannon. Bohannon tells The Swede that he is going to leave town and departs with the gift bottle of liquor. As he saddles up his horse, Lily approaches Bohannon and asks why he is leaving. Bohannon, while drunk, tries to flip the situation on Lily who says that he is running away from everything.
[
]The next morning, Carl finds his shipment of whiskey destroyed. Lily goes off to find Elam, who is with the Negros, and informs him about the situation but Elam challenges her statement and position. Elam then tells her that he quits his job.
[]Bohannon, now sobered up, confronts Lily about last night and tells her that he was indeed planning to ‘run away’ again. Lily is happy that Bohannon is still in town and has not left.
[
]Bohannon goes off and visits Elam who is starting to clear his plot of land. Though Bohannon offers him a job should he need one (along with some house building advice), Elam says that there is no place for him after the railroad and if he were to help against the Sioux if need be. Bohannon reminds him that if the Sioux were to organize, it wouldn’t matter if he was with the railroad or not.
[]Sean and Mickey visit Carl for ‘business’ after the incident. Carl appears defensive but Mickey somewhat provokes him and highlights the ‘incident’ involving the butcher and says that his whiskey shipments will continue to be destroyed if he doesn’t sell the saloon. Sean doesn’t really get a word in at the time. Later on at night, Carl reluctantly signs over the saloon to the McGinnes Brothers.
[
]Bohannon is about to turn in for the night when Lily visits him at his boxcar residence. They share a romantic moment together and give in to their feelings for each other. The next morning, Bohannon tries to quietly leave but Lily awakens before he is able to. Bohannon then departs for the bridge site for work.

Swede = best character

you think he looked in Ms. Lily Bell’s chamber pot when he was on turd detail?
think he sniffed it a bit?

It’s in his nature.
The Swede likes to get up in everyone else’s business.

Who knows what other activities he likes to engage in?
Reverend Cole might know, considering he spent some time in the company of The Swede.
Won’t be hearing from him anytime soon though.

I am not one for tv/movie romances, but man that was done soooooo well. All that yearning mixed with relenting denial for nearly 2 seasons, all culminating into one somber, yet passionate moment. It doesn’t help that Lily Bell has such a hauntingly beautiful visage and elegance.

…But back to the story. Swede unfortunately has reached that depressing “too bad to die” status I loathe. He’s too engaging of a character not keep, but he NEEDS TO DIE… SLOW! Oh well, maybe the season finale might surprise me.

Swede was always gdlk

[]While Bohannon and Mr. Toole are fixing up a steam engine at the bridge site, the expectant father tells Bohannon about the situation that involves himself and Elam concerning Eva’s unborn son. Lily visits Bohannon and informs him about Durant’s expected return to town. After she departs, Bohannon continues working on the steam engine with Toole.
[
]After the train pulls into town, Eva is helping Durant with his appearance before he departs from the train. He thanks her for her help and gives her some money and says that he needs to walk into town under his own power.
[]Lily enters the railroad office and sees The Swede working on some ledgers while sitting in Durant’s chair. When she asks him about what he is doing, The Swede replies that it’s due to a direct order. The order is from Hannah Durant (Durant’s wife) who is initially obstructed from view when Lily first enters the inner room.
[
]Durant slowly makes his way off the train platform, aided by a walking cane. He has a sort of ‘vision’ - he first sees a casket and afterwards sees a white horse gallop past it. As Sean goes up to greet Durant, Durant asks him about the magic lantern show and Sean replies that he’s busy running the saloon and the ‘pleasure house’. He then tells Sean that he took in a show while in Chicago - a tale about two men who found a tiger under a barrel, who then met their end by it. As he makes is way to the railroad office, he sees his wife Hannah, along with Lily, and The Swede inside and as the ladies depart from within the office to outside, Durant hides around the side of the building and overhears Hannah inviting Lily to dinner later that evening.
[]Elam is working on his house and starting to build a fireplace. Psalms stops by and offers his advice in home construction and his help. Later on, Elam talks about the situation concerning his unborn son with saying that he might not be fit for a fatherly role but Psalms says otherwise and reassures Elam that he’d be the only person that could relate to the mixed-race baby in this world. Elam finds some comfort in hearing Psalms’ words.
[
]Eva is reunited with her husband Mr. Toole and as they are enjoying a meal together, she brings up the sights of Chicago, which include tall buildings, and Toole says that the building in New York are double their size. She asks Toole if he would bring her to New York and he replies that it would depend on the baby, and Eva thinks it’s about the condition to travel but instead it’s about his possible race. Though he is past the issue, Toole says that his brother isn’t if he were to introduce Eva to his family with a non-white baby. Eva says that they should go elsewhere, to which Toole says that the world is a big place.
[]Sean meets with Ruth at the church and speaks to her in private. He presents her with a Claddagh ring and asks her to wear it a certain way. Ruth realizes that he is making a ‘proposal’ of sorts and she tells him that she acknowledges his feelings and she’ll hold onto the ring though it’s too small for her. She seems to question this sudden advance by Sean and thinks it’s part of a ‘condition’ when she was given a land deed to the new church site.
[
]Bohannon enters town and Durant stops him asking about the bridge’s progress, which is still a work in progress. Durant invites Bohannon to dinner and tells him that Lily will attend as his escort. Later on that evening, a ‘presentable’ Bohannon meets up with Lily and the two make their way to Durant’s rail car. They are greeted by Hannah and Durant and are seated at the dining table. As the dinner begins, Hannah asks Bohannon about his background and the Southerner says he’s from Meridian, Mississippi and Hannah goes off on a tangent about railroad stuff in that region while talking with Durant. The name Leo Tate comes up and Bohannon is asked if he is an acquaintance by Hannah, Bohannon’s ‘appearance’ suddenly changes - He started the dinner, hunched over and utilizing his fork in his right hand, but later moves the fork to his left hand and uses a knife in his right. He also straightens up his posture and speaks ‘proper’. Over the course of the dinner, it turns out that Bohannon has something in common with Durant along the lines of railroad stuffs. When Hannah asks about his future plans, Bohannon says it’s out west. Lily also says something along the same lines before excusing herself. Hannah makes a remark about Lily’s current standing with the future concerning the railroad. Bohannon offers to escort Lily back to her rail car but she declines and departs, however Hannah accepts Bohannon’s offer. As they leave and are walking together, Hannah apparently notices Bohannon’s ‘upbringing’ and says that there are plans for him in the future of the railroad and that there will also be some changes. Bohannon defends Lily’s position to Hannah despite her statement.
[]During the dinner, The Swede is at the bridge site and apparently tinkering with the steam engine.
[
]The next day, Bohannon meets with Durant and Hannah at the office and they talk about meeting a deadline about the bridge building, however Lily is excluded from the discussion. Bohannon says two weeks while Durant say one week, in regard to the bridge’s completion. At the bridge site, Bohannon is overseeing the raising of a support structure as Toole is working the steam engine, but also notices that The Swede is present off in the distance. Suddenly, the steam engine loses power and is no longer able to control the lines holding up the support structure, which then drops and some workers are injured in the event. Bohannon escapes injury and sees The Swede ride off.
[]Upon returning to town with the injured, Bohannon tells Mr. Toole to take apart the steam engine and find out what’s wrong. He then goes to the office to inform Durant about the event where the two men have a disagreement about some things and as Bohannon brings up the topic about a mileage shortfall, Hannah appears and interrupts the convo, then ushers Durant back inside and tells Bohannon to fix things. Eva checks on Toole and is relieved to find him safe. Elam happens to see Eva embracing her husband and walks off. Later on, Bohannon goes to check on Toole’s who tells him that something wrong with the pressure valve. Upon closer inspection, Bohannon extracts a ore coin from within - a Norwegian penny. The two men note that it was the handiwork of The Swede, who apparently wanted them to know it was him.
[
]Ruth is outside of the church when Joseph stops by and is wearing Indian garb instead of his normal clothes. He informs her that he’s been on a sort of personal journey which made him realize some things - like he will always be a Cheyenne Indian and that the town is a bad place. Joseph apparently still cares for Ruth as he presents her with some provisions from his hunt. He also tells her to leave but she says that she can’t due to the new church and says that she’ll die if she remains in town. Mickey spies on the two from the saloon.
[]A short while later, Sean confronts his brother Mickey at the saloon and requests his share of money from him. Mickey initially refuses but gives him some money but then also goes into a rant about some things, which include: Elam’s land deed and Ruth’s ‘relations’ with Joseph. The part about Ruth infuriates Sean who then starts a fight with Mickey that falls out into the street. The fight is broken up and Mickey informs Sean that Ruth has been seen with Joseph, which leaves Sean in disbelief.
[
]Lily meets with Durant and tries to convince him about her importance to the railroad operation. However, Durant thinks otherwise of her and brings up the information about the railroad mileage shortfall that Bohannon supposedly knows about. He then asks Lily if she had slept with him and the statement surprises her.
[]Durant is having a meeting with Elam who says that he is no longer working for the railroad and has a plot of land for himself. He shows the document to Durant who promptly tears it into pieces. Durant informs Elam about his situation but Elam stands up to him saying that he isn’t afraid of work and that he just wants some respect. As Elam starts to walk off, Durant asks him to sit down and seemingly wants to talk with him.
[
]Hannah finds Lily in ‘her’ rail car and informs her about her having some words with her husband. She then informs her that due to her husband’s condition that they are going to sleep in separate beds, and in so many words Hannah asks Lily to vacate the rail car. Lily says that she has nowhere to go but Hannah says that she’ll figure something out. Later, Lily asks Bohannon if she can stay at his place and he says yes though he will find other accommodations for the time being. Lily says that he can also stay but Bohannon declines, telling her to not ‘test a man’ before kissing her and departing.
[]Ruth returns to the church and a drunken Sean surprises her and asks about her ‘relations’ with Joseph. She somewhat dodges the question as Sean rants but he leaves afterwards when Ruth tells him off.

]Bohannon and Mr. Toole are keeping a night watch at the bridge site and talking to each other about their situations in regards to their women. They notice that they aren’t really alone out there and hear the cries of some Sioux Indians off in the distance.
[]The next day, Lily is about to make her way out to the bridge site when Hannah stops her. Hannah offers Lily a ticket to New York an an introduction to a family that is in need of a governess - a future for her away from the railroad. After Hannah has closed the inner office room and left Lily to mull over the offer, she makes her way into the room and takes the ledger from within the safe. As Lily leaves the office with the ledger, Elam greets her and the two have a small exchange of words. Lily seems wary of Elam after his appearance.
[
]At the bridge site, Bohannon drives a locomotive across the completed bridge. Though the workers celebrate the achievement, Durant seems to have his attention elsewhere when he talks to Bohannon and the subject of the mileage shortfall comes up. He then pulls Bohannon off to the side to talk to him about something as Mr. Toole and the other men resume work. Durant offers Bohannon partnership in the railroad in order to have backup when the railroad board visits. Though he tries to persuade Bohannon with wealth and his ‘debts’ being squared, Bohannon brings up Doc’s death as the tipping point in his already made up decision.

They notice a rider coming in, which happens to be Lily. She tells Bohannon about their possible future together in regard to the railroad and tells/shows him the ledger that will change things. Bohannon throws the ledger into the fire and tells Lily that Durant is likely to have her killed because of her actions. A Sioux Indian appears by the tracks and as Bohannon fires at the figure and goes to investigate, Lily pulls the ledger from the fire. Bohannon notes that he had nicked the Indian due to some blood found at the site. He tells Lily to burn the ledger.
[

Mr. Toole interrupts the pair, who apparently had been looking for his wife. He draws his gun on Elam and rants about how Eva had made her choice though Eva protests that she intends to stay with her husband. Mr. Toole apparently reaches his breaking point and turns the gun on himself and kills himself before Eva and Elam. Later, a service is held for Mr. Gregory Toole and Mickey says some words about the man’s life.
[

[
]The next day, a horse bearing the body of The Swede (covered in white paint) makes it’s way into town and it appears that the man is injured. The Swede tells Hannah in the hospital tent that he wasn’t accepted by the Sioux as the ‘White Spirit’ and was punished - his chest exposed to flame from small fires built upon it. Though he is glad to see Mrs. Durant, he tells her to leave town or else she will perish. After Bohannon appears and puts The Swede at gunpoint, he says that the Sioux will attack on the night of the ‘Blood Moon’. Though Hannah protests his actions, Bohannon tells her that The Swede will hang for his sabotaging of the railroad and orders a guard to stand watch over him.
[]Lily visits Durant, who is somewhat surprised that she is still alive, and tells him that the ledger was sent out Though Durant says that he had offered Lily safe passage from the town, he then insults her calling her a whore. Lily retorts that when the railroad is no longer within his grasp, a ‘whore’ will have been it’s downfall. Durant is worried by her words. He visits The Swede and asks him how damning the ledger is and the man replies that he is glad to see Durant suffer.
[
]Bohannon visits Elam at his house and thanks Elam for not killing Lily. Elam says that Lily had pulled a gun on him and the two men laugh about it, then Bohannon tells him to mount up to help out with preparations against the Sioux. Bohannon is angered after finding out about Durant’s intention to kill Lily but she stops him from going through with punishing Durant.
[]Union soldiers arrive and are greeted by Elam and Psalms. The two negro men survey the ‘help’ - five soldiers, a cannon, and a gatling gun. As some townsfolk prepare to evacuate, Elam spots Eva who didn’t leave with the other townsfolk for Council Bluffs. She says that she’ll stay at Elam’s place during the ordeal. Sean appears ready to leave as well and urges Ruth to go along with him but she says that she is staying as well.
[
]The Swede breaks free from his bonds and kills the man outside who was standing guard.
[]At night, the Sioux commence their attack and Bohannon, along with a group of men, fights them off at the bridge. However the Sioux begin to break through their position and make their way to town. The town comes under attack from the Sioux: Durant fends some Indians from killing Hannah at the office and the two of them make their escape afterwards. Elam and Lily fight off some Sioux. The action even reaches Eva at Elam’s house and Elam manages to save her from harm.
[
]The Swede prances/dances through the carnage of the burning town, relishing in it’s destruction.
[]The next day reveals the extent of the damage - The town is burned down and many dead people are among the wreckage.
[
]Lily makes her way to Bohannon’s rail car and finds that The Swede is waiting for her. Though she begs for her life and says that Bohannon will kill him, The Swede ends up killing Lily by strangulation and tips a candle over on a nearby table before he leaves the rail car. Flash forward to Bohannon being asked about protecting the bridge versus the town and he says that strategic points are more valuable and that the town and people are replacable. Bohannon finds Lily in the ruins of his rail car. He walks through the town carrying Lily’s body as some of the town looks on: Durant and Hannah, Elam and Eva, Sean and Mickey. Bohannon finally arrives at Ruth’s Church and lays her body down on a bench.
[]Later, Bohannon and The Swede are seen making their way to the railroad bridge. As Bohannon binds the hands and slips a noose around the neck of Lily’s killer, The Swede remarks on the situation that apparently has brought the two men together. When Bohannon goes to secure the lines for the hanging, The Swede bids Bohannon a ‘good-bye’ and jumps from the bridge into the river gorge below. Bohannon is taken aback by the action of The Swede, who appears to have died as a result.
[
]Fast-forward to present time, the railroad representative asks Bohannon if he will entertain the notion of continuing to build the railroad, at the behest of the president of the United States. In the final scene of the episode, Bohannon places a railroad marker at the bridge and walks off.
Crazy two-hour finale.

Three character deaths in the S2 Finale:

Mr. Toole was kinda unexpected, like Reverend Cole, but it strangely fit the situation at the time.

Lily…

The Swede… This guy defies Bohannon till the very end.
The character was enjoyable and shall be missed (if he actually died).

Had a random thought in regard to the appearance of The Swede at the start of the second hour.
I had hoped that he would make his entrance into the town as the ‘White Spirit’, but not like that.
Needed something a bit more - grand. Like, rolling up in town backed by a group of Sioux or after the Sioux had raided the town, while in the ‘White Spirit’ persona.
His ‘moment’ of making his way through the carnage in town was pretty entertaining though.

What will happen next season?
