It is never too late! A lot of catching up as Saitsu said, unless you put down tons of money. However it is a lot of fun, you should at least give it a try.
I played the beta and played MTG for about 10 years. Iām not looking to spend any money on the game. What deck is best to start with?
Mageā¦because you wonāt have much choice in the matter.
Muster for battle + Quartermaster is now my new favorite combo along with the knife jugglers.
After you beat the tutorial, look into Warlock Zoo or Hunter rush, both are the cheapest to get going with. However, with the recent expansion, no clue how the meta will settle, so its hard to give a good answer. But both of those are cheap to craft
Oh, just need to say that Unstable Portal is stuuuuuupid.
Unstable Portal is such a dumb card. It very rarely whiffs by getting a 1 drop, and has a super high chance of getting you a crazy amount of tempo the following turn.
Its good for values, but not for synergy based decks; but it makes for interesting games : )
I got a flame imp from Portal once. Lol.

Wow arenas have been going really shitty today. Like⦠barely getting to 3.
Yeah i went on my worst run in arena in 10 months where i didnāt get over 10 wins once and had a lot of 2-3 win runs over the last week, i feel like the game is way less stable now. More random cards, less certainty if a play is optimal, and itās harder to draft a consistent deck.
Like i thought i was due for my first 12 win run, but lost to madder bomber(well preceded by fire elemental on 3 consecutive turns), but i also stole games with enhanco mechano and unstable portal where i was able to generate an unfair amount of tempo for basically nothing.
I think itāll be much harder to be infinite now just because arena just has way more variance and even marginal cards can have huge swings and sometimes you just have to draft them.
I feel like the arena tiers have shifted a bit. I think warlock is way better now itās just because your commons are way way more impactful, and i feel with how the game is now more games come down to topdecking because everyone wants to trade because racing is terrifying when there are way more crazy cards that basically say āyou win the game 30% of the timeā.
I hope as new sets are released they start phasing sets out of arena as other CCGs do in draft formats because I think if this trend keeps up arena will basically just be a crapshoot.

I just finished a mage mirror in which it gave my opponent a wisp and me a blood imp on consecutive turns.
I also had it draw me a 4-mana Antonidas. And considering Iām running a spare parts mage deck, well, letās just say I won that game handily.
Random observation: donāt be surprised if handlocks start running Ogre Brute along with, or instead of, watcher. 1 more mana, 1 less health, but can always attack, and its effect can be beneficial a lot of times since it can go around taunts and hit stealthed minions. Lotta utility and doesnāt always need a second card to activate it.

Yeah but it also leaves them even more at the mercy of Lightbomb.
Also itās one more mana, and Handlock really likes to make use of efficient hand and mana plays which Ogre Brute may throw off.
Hereās my updated secrets mage deck that i made during naxx

Took out 1-2 earthern far seers, 2x ethereal and 1x kiron tor for 2 unstable portals, 2x illuminators, and 1x Kezan and somewhere i snuck in a faceless.
So far the new cards solved a fair amount of problems in my deck. Which was healing, lack of early game, and likely being hard countered by certain cards.
ā¢2x unstable portal is retarded on turn 2, enough said. If the card gets me a good legendary itās worth tossing out a counter spell/duplicate to cover it. The first game i played it at turn 9 and got me Alex in a mirror and Malganis in the same game.
ā¢Illuminator in the same game saved my ass from being burned down by fireballs with so much healing + duplicate/counter spell if needed. Exactly what i needed for this deck. If left alone itāll heal me from low health all the way back to full. With a slow deck like this that relies on annoying board control, this is a god send.
ā¢1x Kezan helps so much in mirror matches ANNNND⦠hilariously enough its great for those trying to counter the deck with Kezan. Triggering duplicate on Kezan on a mirror match can be pretty much gg as well.
ā¢Faceless for kethuzad, cairne, sylvanas or other big legendaries that i want to duplicate if they came from my opponentās side.
Lastly again, Kelthuzad works great when you have a endless supply of belchers, water elementals, sunwalkers, cairnes and all that. Also great when youāre covering him with duplicates and counter spell if needed. I might make another deck thatās built less around Kelthuzad and sneak in rag.
One problem i suppose is dealing with massive amounts of minions in early game. Illuminator does take some setup and these mech decks get individually huge so fast.
edit mech deck absolutely shits on this. Too slow.

With Zoo you can pretty much do whatever you want. Hunter is also cheap to make.
Oh man, I laughed for a good minute straight when this happened.

Played Sneedās Old Shredder on an empty board against a aladin. He responds with the aldor/kodo combo. And for his 8 mana, he gotā¦KelāThuzad, which brings the shredder back. I played a Tinkertown Technician, used hero power and traded with the cards on the board to empty it, and ended turn. He played equality and consecration to clear the board, and my Sneedās Old Shredder gave meā¦Sneedās Old Shredder. He conceded immediately, with 24 health left.
Snowchugger alone makes Warrior piss in fear.
