Hearthstone - That other, other, other Blizzard game

Yeah, I’ve had a fair amount of success with getting a Cairne/Sylvanas/Nerubian Egg/Fire Elemental (in descending priority) to stick, and then the following turn play Baron + Reincarnate + as many Ancestral Spirits as I have to fill the board with stupid shit. I haven’t tried the play Baron, and then next turn Leeroy + Ancestral Spirit + Reincarnate burst finish variation yet, though.

So I downloaded this earlier today and yeah… I’ve never used my iPad this much before. Good stuff.

Having something to play early game isn’t as important as something strong to close out the game

In most of my decks, I bring enough early game to just survive against rush. Drawing into 1 and 2 drops feels pretty bad when you’re staring down an opposing 5-6 drop.

Which is why a lot of the lower drops need to have some impact. Pyromancer, for instance, is a 2 drop that can make a difference end game. Or a lot of lower drops were played that replaced themselves (novice engineer, loot hoarder), or could be used late game and still be useful (Abusive Sargent), or were just all around solid (Farseer, Golems, Deathlord)

That’s why ramp druid is so good right now. Keep dropping all those taunts until zoo runs out of gas then you start pounding them with bigger creatures

It also helps that zoo has gotten slower with the addition of Nerubian Egg and Void Terror, and Keeper of the Grove counters both of the cards pretty hard.

Okay so I tried to play this game online, and I constantly get bodied. So since I am a complete beginner (started yesterday). What should I do to get some better cards? Right now I am going through training with all the classes (just finished mage and am doing warlock now). But it seems like the cards i have are so basically that I am struggling to build a decent deck. So any beginner advice would be great.

Buying 40 packs and/or the first wing in Naxx is a pretty good way to get going quickly, I did this personally after a while during the beta. Either way it’s important to do your daily quests and get some gold from winning games in casual or ranked (10g per 3 wins), you’ll get an average of 50g per day with the possibility of 100g more from playing. I recommend that you use the gold you gain in the arena (150g), you’ll have the chance to acquire cards more efficiently than buying packs straight from the store while improving along the way.

There’s several decks you can make with cheap craftable + the basic cards you have that are great for starting. Also know that there are a fair amount of basic cards that are very strong, even used in a lot of top level decks.

Chillwind Yeti, Senjin Shieldmasta, boulder fist ogres are notable examples. Especially the former 2.

What class do you want to play? That would be a big help.

There are essentially three styles of Hearthstone. Aggro, where you attack as much as possible, Control, where you fight for the board and have superior minions, and Combo, where you combine cards to produce huge damage.

You can make a cheap, effective deck from the Warlock pool that would take you to Legendary if you had the skill without spending anything.

Hunter is also a great class for getting to legendary without spending cash money.

Recent Funny&Lucky moments:

The Rivendare dream @2:47. At least one of them. D:
Would love stuff like that in an actual match, Amaz used Rivendare etc. recently in his Shaman deck, too.

Since he hasn’t leveled all the classes to get all the basic cards I suggest he does that first, just to get a feel for the game. Then start playing arena to familiarize yourself with whatever cards are available in hearthstone

Also a great class to play while intoxicated.

Yeah, if you just want to be competitive, run a zoolock or that naxx hunter deck I posted a few pages back. You will need to unlock some wings (wing 2 has the webspinner, but that can easily be replaced with a free alternative) and craft 2x savannah highmane, but otherwise the deck runs on commons and basics. And it can literally get you to legend, if you learn to play it well.

One thing I’ve noticed as I get better, is it’s not just about making the best play for your deck, its about making the best play for the deck you are facing. You really need to stop and think about what the opponent has in their deck, feel their gameplay style, and make sure you take the optimal choices.

For instance, should I use hunters mark on that turn 4 senjin? Or do I need to save it for a turn 8 rag? Maybe I burn my kill commando on senjin instead, or maybe I need kill command later for face damage. Those answers are more dependant on the deck you’re facing rather than the deck you built. But I like playing at that level.

I hate it when you’re rank 20 though because who knows what goes on in those decks, lol. It’s like playing somebody online in SF4 who wake up DPS everytime, no matter how much you punish it. And you think, “He’s learned now, I can use a meaty to get some pressure on” and nope, another DP comes out

Greatest thing about the midrange hunter: Good matchups against Handlock/Zoolock.
The amount of bots playing zoo is so damn high, I really hope for Blizz to do something against that. :expressionless:
Hunter should be the cheapest yet effective deck, even 3 rares are enough (Flare/Kodo/2 Scar) ~600 dust in the end.

Still didn’t play ladder so far, bought yesterday after a few beers over my limit 20 packs.
No gold for Naxx. But hey, gained 1300 dust… yay.

There are bots?

Yeah there are a lot actually, some try to mimic a real player but there are some key tells so it’s pretty easy to pick up on it.
The most common decks they play are Zoo and midrange Shaman afaik. I’ve even played Shaman bots at around rank 5 and 4.

Apparently the average of running into a bot at high ranks is about 1 in 5/1 in 6.

Also there was evidence of the number of players that made legend within the first week of this season increased by around 3-5x more than any other season have to find the thread again. These bots aren’t like the AIs in naxx where they make absolutely stupid mistakes like missing lethal, but still make some questionable decisions here and there.

Anyways pretty much the whole idea for these bots is to

  1. if they have a 51% win rate at the higher ranks, then they’ll slowly grind to legend. As a note, the ones that reached legend the first week, you can consider the “lucky” ones. So there’s a LOT of bots out there.

  2. grinding for gold

Scary thing is that they are capable of beating top level players.

Blizzard is known to do massive periodic ban waves randomly so they’ll stick around until then. It’s a more recent issue, like around the start of this season.
