Were you looking specifically at earphones or headphones?
Well if you’re going to stick with Bluetooth, you should at least try the official Sony one. From experience, it’s got very good voice quality and I’ve even heard some other people say that they prefer it over some more expensive sets from Plantronics, etc.
Skullcandys are for made for scenesters and posers who don’t know jack about real audio quality.
Personally, I prefer Sennheisers.
this is what im using for my ps3 and pc right now for voice chatting and general music listening (wearing them now as we speak lol)
its wireless has a usb doogle but its plug and play works fine with my ps3 no configuring same with pc. I have a smallish house and can roam just about anywhere with no problems.
Also the usb cable to charge the headset is the same as ur ps3 cable soo u get an extra cable now
While what you say is true, the same can be said of Sennheiser. Despite it actually being quality, people who don’t know anything about audio quality buy them because thats what they hear are “audiophile” equipment.
Don’t knock it 'til you try it. While Skullcandy’s are mostly crap, there are some very good hidden gems. The Skullcandy Titans are actually very good for the price (should be around $25-30 bucks).
Sennheisers also fall under this rule, except most Senny’s are pretty good. Just don’t rely on the brand name and judge for yourself. Abuse in-store demos!
All the Senny’s I’ve bought (one headset and two in-ear) have turned out to be quality. I actually decided on the brand after hearing from my brother (who works as a DeeJay at a local radio station) that they use Sennheiser’s.
so what kind of cans do you guys use for gaming, music, movies?
For portable music, I usually use a decent pair of earphones (anywhere between the $30-$100) to get a relatively good sound without having to worry about damaging the earphones themselves. If I’m at home or indoors, I may bump up to a nicer pair of earphones, or alternatively seek the use of circumaural headphones (esp. when I’m sitting down doing musical analysis for something I may play in a life performance).
For gaming and movies, I tend to seek out a pair of earphones that, at least advertised, will be slightly heavier on the bass. Some companies like Ultimate Ears will, at least advertise their product to, offer a heavier bass by making minor modifications to their mainstream variant (eg. SuperFi 5eb vs. the regular SuperFi 5s)
I consider myself the budget audiophile. While I’d love to shell out money for the higher end stuff, it just isn’t feasible. With that said…
Music, closed-ear
Sennheiser HD201
Music, open-ear
Koss PortaPro
Music, monitoring
Koss Pro4AA
Gaming
SteelSound 3H
I would actually recommend either the SteelSound 5H or the Fatal1ty Creatve Headset (don’t know the exact model, roommate has it and it’s nice).
Earbuds
Sony MDR-EX70/71SL
Skullcandy Titan
As you can see, none of these are even over $50, with the exception of the Koss Pro4AA and even then, that thing’s a steal. Any Koss headset comes with no-questions-asked lifetime warranty. I’m not saying these are the best at what they do but at the price, they may as well be. Besides the Grados SR60i, anything better will require an amp and about $200.
I enjoy a good set of headphones. I have Sennheiser HD-580’s at home, Denon AH-D2000’s at work (with build quality that’s kinda meh), and Etymotic ER-4P’s for travel. I use the 580’s when playing games on PC and have a usb desk microphone.
This is a pretty comprehensive list of good headphones in different styles at different price ranges (at least every pair of headphone I have is on the list):
head-fi headphone buyer’s guide
These are specifically for music, but if it’s good for music it’ll also be good for movies and games (though they wouldn’t have microphones attached).
I use Grado RS-1 at home and Grado 325i at work
The Denon’s don’t have the loose screw problem they used to have. I agree the D2000’s feel fragile, but they are pretty solid. That being said, why would you not take extra care with $300 headphones.
The head-fi list is a good resource. Head-fi in general is a pretty solid resource, but it will try to kill your wallet. Of course as with any message board, take what people there say with a grain of salt. On some days it feels like a snake oil factory.
Oh. That’s nice that they don’t have the loose screw problem anymore. Mine just developed it out of nowhere, and I’ve taken good care of it. I ended up patching it up myself and it works well and sounds great.
You’re right about the head-fi warning. If you’re not careful, head-fi can lead you to spend way too much money for increasingly minuscule differences. Once you get past the $200 mark for headphones, get a decent amp for power, and maybe better than stock cables, diminishing returns starts happening really fast and you have to be really into it to make spending more worthwhile (IMO).
I probably should have put such a disclaimer with that list.
Have you tried the JMoney pads with your Denons? I’ve been wondering how much more comfortable they could actually be.
Sorry to bump this thread so much, but I was thinking of making a thread for Xbox Headsets…
I’ve been looking for a much better pair than the official ones, that also wont cost me the same as a decent arcade stick.
people quoting those audiophile forums as god’s truth are insane, the average level of intelligence and technical understanding is basically zero.
audiphiles are basically clueless hyperconsumers. You are not allowed to discuss double blind testing except for one place on headfi and many of the most respected, top members recommend shit like, well, see for yourself:

people quoting those audiophile forums as god’s truth are insane - Agreed. I only ever listen to people who have had actual experience of things that they’re talking about. Everything else is just theory and not based on anything real. This goes for both sides of any argument/discussion, either supporting or dismissing it. I often look at the number of opinions I have about things I know nothing about and laugh at myself.
audiphiles are basically clueless hyperconsumers - don’t agree with that at all I’m afraid. I’d say that the definition of a real audiophile is someone who is on a quest for excellent sound reproduction not someone who is driven to spending loads of money on expensive and/or pointless equipment. Admitedly there’s a lot of snake oil out there and some people are susceptable for falling for it.
I’ve gone through quite a lot of headphones and I’d recommend Plantronics. The one that I’m using right now has been through so much that i’ve used tape to hold it up, just so i don’t have to replace it
I finally got my portapro’s a month ago. They’re absolutely awesome. I’ve only heard a store demo before having my own set. I can tell you, for 30 bucks, with the lifetime warranty and great sound quality, these are good headphones.
Still, I don’t think most people could tell the difference between the earbuds they got at the dollar store and a decent set of headphones. I myself would never spend more than 30 on headphones for any reason. Those $500 audio technica’s? That extra $470 could go to feed a starving family for half a year. Yeah, I dig for diamonds in the rough.
Sennheiser CX-300 in-ear phones are pretty good for music.
Too bad I keep losing mine.
