(I’m posting this in the HDR strategy forum since I think HDR players will be interested in the replies, but if the rules say that it should actually be posted one of the tournament forums - I apologize!)
So, I want to attend five or six HDR tournaments in 2010. I can travel to anywhere in the US. Which events would you recommend?
I’ve looked through the tournaments forum and put together this provisional list (in chronological order):
Final Round, GA, Mar
Midwest Championships, IL, Jun
Evo, NV, Jul
Seasons Beatings, OH, Oct
Norcal Regionals, CA, Nov
Northeast Championships, PA, Dec
Since I live in Atlanta, Final Round is a no-brainer. Impact Clash is in Atlanta in Nov too.
Any recommendations people can give me would be much appreciated… thanks!
I haven’t been to all of them before, but judging from what I have attended and have watched and heard about I’d say Evo, Final, SB, and Midwest are the biggest for ST/HDR.
It all depends though, it’s going to get pushed to the side even more this year with SSFIV coming out.
I was thinking about what motivates people to attend a venue. Some will ask, how many people are entering… while others will ask who’s going?
What takes more precedence?
a.) Number of entrants
b.) Number of quality players (consistent players)
c.) overall average of a and b?
I’m still curious to see how many people enter HDR tournies. Major events in norcal: NCR was 40 entrants and Fuddruckers was 32. How many did EVO have…was it 280+?
There’s also the aspect of meeting and talking to people face-to-face who like the same game that you do. With online play and the forums, everything is virtual and rather impersonal. It’s interesting and fun to put faces to names.
They used to have Evo regional tournaments. There’s a threadabout it, but no word from SRK staff or anybody whether that’s coming back or not for 2010. It would be nice. Anybody know when the last Evo regionals were held? I can’t remember, but I’m thinking 2006.
Also, there are the random tournaments like Gamestop and whatnot.
I was actually going by last year’s numbers, which also used HDR. Nice to see the numbers seem to be on the rise although we’ll have to see who actually shows up.
MWC (Midwest Championships) has traditionally been the tourney that major midwest players show up to (and at 1 point, folks from both coasts), it normally has Evo qualifiers, and I’m pretty sure it’s the oldest annual video game tournament still running in the world (starting from 1994, even earlier than QuakeCon).
blitz: Evo regional tourneys were only held in 2006. ECC became Evo East. FR became part of Evo South. MWC became/and still is Evo North. Evo West was yet another one-time WC major. GameStop never held an official HDR tourney.
It’s a tourney where they actually enjoy SF2 instead of treating it like the old grandpa who shows up to dinner uninvited but you can’t say no to out of respect for his age.
Also it has arcade ST plus HDR both as official games, HDR will net you a seed at Evo (well it did last year) and the best part is the amount of top players there. Yes at any major it has a couple but at MWC I saw that it especially had the killers for SF2, think of a pool of 50+ people where 30 of them are all potentials to win. Hell the AZ crew even shows up to it.
Just as a point of ‘hey guys we exist’. We’re having a tournament in Indianapolis on January 30th. It’s not huge but I know the organizers would love to have some extra people. Personally there’s enough MW love for HDR that I think we can make HDR the most popular game at the tournament and show all those SF4 players what real SF looks like. SO if you’re not doing anything on January 30th consider coming down to the Crossroads of America, Indianapolis for Naptown Clash 3! I am happy to say I’ll be there, Vega (XBL Immortalbmw) will be there. Ghaleon will be there. Alex6x6x6 is hopefully going to come so if some MW people show up we can make it a pretty successful day.
