HD Remix: The good, the bad and the ugly

What follows Just are some personal observations - please chip in with yours after digesting:

Good:

Guiles RH Flashkick, I love using it as an anti crossup reversal, the angle it hits from sometimes is ourageous

Blanka. He feels super balanced now, the pressure you can lay down with his sped-up rainbow rolls is excellent. I actually use his hop now too - favorite usage is to hop through an opponent just as they get up to really mess up their timing, especially charge characters. Can lead to a whiffed reversal, punished by a cheeky chow down Smiley

Ken feels hyper-agressive now, just as he should be. Using his quick hurricanes to catch up with a blocked fireball is great. I also can perform the so-called 'juice kick' much easier in Remix (air hurricane kick with top spin, done immidiately as you leave the ground, such that is quickly puts you near the opponent). This may just be my excecution getting better, but I pull it off with far more success these days (can anyone confirm if it's different?) A sweet moment came he other day when I launched the juice kick from right up in Gief's face and it hit him like four times, on the way up, and down too - I think in that senario it may be possible to combo off the back of it, I'd love to hear the specifics if anyone knows.

Cammy. She's my main girl now, which is great considering I never touched her before (why would you, except for that 'jumping Strong versus Dhalsim' quirk?) Low Forward sums most of it up, but I just find her really fun - guessing games versus fireball characters are great, them not knowing if you'll go through them, or over with a Hooligan Throw. Jump Strong is also an invaluable tool in some matchups - I was able to beat a decent Honda using pretty much just that last night. Standing forward is great versus Gief, the list goes on, she has these character specific tricks that really spice up the game.

note - Those are my 4 main guys, I'll happily come back with more observations when I expand my knowledge on the rest of the cast, I'm sure there are many other positive quirks that have appeared in this game.

Bad:

Akuma. Come on man, just because I failed to block one crossup air fireball, it shouldn’t mean you get free Crouch Forward xx Hurricane, juggle SRK every time…even worse, cross up air fireball (or many other things) in to Raging Demon. Gah. My reaction is to sweep when I see it coming, which I know is my fault rather than the games’, but I just feel he’s imbalanced generally. So he’s really my only ‘bad’ in a gameplay sense, thing about this game.

Ugly:

Cammy’s sprite. shudder Damn, that’s ugly. Just look at her eyes on any other colour than default. She looks like a bad flash animation. At least she plays like a dream.

Akuma’s sprite. All over the place, the muscles just look plain wrong. And he’s overpowered, so that just adds insult to injury.

The characters in the backround, on Dee J and Vega’s stage especially. They also have a low quality flash game vibe to them. Just dry and devoid of personality.

Lastly, in my opinion, all the new music is ugly.

Nick

I don’t nitpick about the drawing because, well, this game is old as hell and they rebooted it after many, many years. We’re looking at 15 years now, aren’t we? It’s a blessing albeit there may be some “flaws”.

Game plays excellent. There are characters I wouldnt even touch back in ST which now have regular rotation solely due to feeling more balanced and easier to use. Cammy, Fei Long, Zangief…especially Zangief; he’s a monster.

I think low and low mid tier should have gotten more jumps in balance. T-Hawk may have gotten better, but he’s still low imo. Maybe I am not using him right, but that means everyone else is in the same position since I rarely see anyone use T-Hawk online.

Speaking of online, it’s the bad/ugly part of the game. It’s been stated many times over in various FG threads, but most of the time, I hate it. I can play around 15 matches before shit starts fucking up. At one point, I can’t even log onto the network. A real dealbreaker for me.

When it works, it’s great, but when it stops working, I rage out. I rage out a lot now.

Don’t forget the USSR music shudders.

Is that the Minibosses? It certainly sounds like their brand of sloppy playing, shitty tone and shitty arrangements.

know what you mean about that track man - Jesus why couldn’t they have had the bass line solo looping at the start, like on the original.

I make electronic music (breaks + dnb), and that track would have been my first choice if I’d have known about the project at the time. The bassline screams electro.

Damn, I woulda pumped it up some!

Can’t do much on Akuma, he’s easy to win with easy to play with.

Good:

  • Udon Comics
  • OC Remix

Bad:

  • Akuma

Ugly:

  • Net Code
  • Bugs
  • Glitches
  • Backbone

have you played online on both 360 and PS3? I’m wondering if the rumours that it runs better on 360 are true. I’ve only played 360. HDR isn’t even out on PS3 in the UK yet…would be extremely harsh to have to wait all this extra time, only to get a worse online experience.

Scrub.

This thread will most likely get closed with the quickness if anyone mentions akuma again it’s really fucking annoying everyone bitching about him just because they suck at the game. You have 2 options go find ways to beat him in the how to beat akuma thread or don’t play the damn game.

Oh yeah and remix is A MILLION times better on 360 online then ps3 that is a fact anyone who tells you otherwise is an idiot. Both have their fair share of bugs but the bottom line is psn matches in general are noticeably more laggy and glitchy then xbl matches.

I’ve got over 1,000 matches easily on both consoles.

The bugs are rampant in both versions no matter which you play. Lifebar glitches, start colors causing disconnects, choosing Claw can cause glitches or disconnects, and the rollback system is extremely broken.

But, the PS3 version suffers from major online and offline issues. The PS3 version lags before the start of each round often for no reason. The PS3 version also will reset your button configuration depending on what controller is set to controller #1 so each time you play you need to check your button configuration. And while the PS3 version disconnects slightly more than the 360 version, the PS3 crashes from errors that have nothing to do with lag way more often, and when the game disconnects from the other player it loses your entire connection to the PSN as well. The PS3 version also can crash the entire PS3 meaning you have to hard reset. And the menus are slow and laggy on the PS3.

I stick with the 360 version almost exclusively now because ST:HDR on the PS3 is painfully annoying with all its issues.

If you are really, really into ST, I’d recommend a 360. And this is coming from a huge Sony fanboy…

@orochizoolander

Yeah well I’d much appreciate my thread not getting closed, the body of my original post is not focused on that (it’s becoming a bit like the play Macbeth, this issue ‘don’t mention it, it’s bad luck’)

@VirtuaFighterFour

that sounds like a pretty difinative summary of the 2 experiences, thanks.

After playing tons of matches on PS3 I recently downloaded the 360 version as well because i’m getting a stick for 360 (and possibly modding it later). For ps3 i’d have to restart the game every 20-30 mins or so because I get chain lagged out… if i drop out of a game it drops me out of every game after that no matter what. This happens more often then I would like. In addition I’ve noticed that the ps3 version has a period of lag just when the match starts very often. On 360, I did drop a few matches, but nowhere near the chain drops that I run into on PS3. I haven’t received that start of match lag yet in games that are running smoothly either.

That being said, I don’t like the quick match option on 360… it just puts you into a room. On ps3 you get into a 1v1 match automatically so you can play more matches instead of watching others play and waiting… this might be the reason for the drops on ps3 version though so who knows. Otherwise both versions are great and neither would really be a wrong choice. If you intend to play online exclusively you might want to look into 360 just because of that chain drop out problem though.

You’re dumb.

I’ve played some akumas, but the Gief has taken him out for the most part. SPD really rapes Akuma.

lol until you get into the corner as gief.

vegas remixed theme is fucking AWESOME.
