A HD monitor with zero input lag is “yuck” ? Why?
4:3 actually looks better than 16:9 from a technical standpoint. You get the sprites in the resolution they were intended and drawn for (yes, it’s still high res). There aren’t any fuzzy lines from everything being upscaled as is the case with 16:9.
I respect folks enjoying larger looking sprites but please keep your subjective “looking better” away from hampering the game with a huge chunk of the screen bobbing up and down anytime an aerial move is made.
We played at Westcoast warzone in 16:9 with no problems, and on the same Asus monitor.
This is the game’s default. Good chance many players are already use to it (At least the ones who actually play HDR on a regular basis and not only during Tournaments).
Well that explains things. It’s a shame. I now seen the poll which Megaman did and more prefer 16:9.
Hopefully next time EVO goes with the majority and play on 16:9 next time.
Regardless, I apologize for going off topic!
i hope y’all enjoy amateur play…

gief (me) vs a random ranked match akuma
I hope you don’t mind a critique of your play. I felt the need to type this because I see a lot of potential in that video.
First, I just gotta say that you did a whole lot better when you weren’t talking and otherwise psyching yourself out of the matchup. Even so, you won and you did fairly well. That should boost your confidence. The only three things that stick out to me are…
-
Always punish a whiffed Hurricane Kick. The first time Akuma flew over your head, you did nothing. Zangief has one of the easiest moves to use in that situation: Punch or Kick Lariat. Since it hits on the first frame and is invincible, it’s very easy to hit anything flying over a crouching Zangief. (That means jumping attacks, too.) The second time I noticed him whiffing, you used crouching strong. Another excellent choice…along with the universal HK counter of crouching fierce. (Just about every character can take out a HK with crouching fierce.) Just note that he was still in front of you when you hit with it, though. You can’t use that move while he’s overhead, as Zangief’s head sticks up when he starts those two punches.
-
Tick with standing short, too. After you landed your SPDs and knocked him down with other things, your meaty attack of choice was standing forward. While it does have reach and can be used to bait reversal DPs, that move doesn’t give you an advantage if it connects. Standing short, however, requires you to be a little closer, making it more likely to bait a reversal DP, and will also give you frame advantage. So…on block, you could tick into the SPD, while on hit, you can…tick into SPD again…or link to crouching roundhouse and reset the situation more easily. The whole purpose is to corner him, so do what you have to do.

CROSSUP SPLASH (Crossup jumping :D:+:HP:)!!! I didn’t see this once! You must add this to your repertoire. I saw your opponent do one reversal DP the entire match. You absolutely have to make your opponent convince you that they can reversal consistently before you abandon this very important tactic. If you land a crossup splash, you can end the match very quickly by following that up with cr.:lp:(x2-4), cr.:hk:/SPD…for one example of a combo that will dizzy, the latter option resulting in over 50% damage (and Akuma takes more damage than that!) and a dizzy opponent. Touch of Death, anyone?
Like I said, you must add that tactic to your knockdown games.
For more ways to increase the offensive potential of your Zangief, I humbly suggest reading a phrase that I’ve been trying not to type lately but it just keeps coming back…
READ MY FAQ!!!
Go to GameFAQs.com and read my HDR Cross-up, Link, and Combo FAQ. Add cross-ups to your repertoire and annoying Akumas will not bother you when you give them a ride on the SPD train. Also make sure you’re reading the Zangief thread. Tons of useful stuff in there.
No one can pimp a FAQ out like OJ, you better watch out. Soon you’ll be reading about Cammy’s ToD and asking yourself, why don’t I play Cammy? Then you’ll suck…
And second, I prefer 4:3… because its my only option.
Only if you can’t start that ToD with crossup :hp:! Just kidding. Thanks for the compliment, though.
i always appreciate advice. i think the hardest part about taking advice is actually applying it.
but for number 1, that’s more “i do it if i expect it”. i mean, picking akuma against me anyway is intimidating since any akuma worth his salt means game over for me. but if it was ken, you would have seen more punishes. i generally use c fierce to punish, but i guess i should lariat. i really need to use that move as more than “FIREBALL IMMUNITY” because i didn’t know it beat psycho crusher until evoannon told me.
number 2, it wasn’t till recent where i actually started trying to apply tick throwing into my game (i didn’t bother to practice it, i generally whiffed the spd due to doing it early). but 20 minutes of training mode, and you know, actually trying, i think i got it down. also is it practical to do for tick lk into super? i mean, i can do it about…15% of the time i attempt it, but even then if i fuck up properly, i might still get an spd out of it. (you know, i guess it’s in your FAQ)
and 3, dragon punches suck (i tend to play more defensive against shotos because of it). hard for me to mentally get down when it’s ok to go for a crossup. actually yeah, i get dped out of like every crossup attempt, that’s why i don’t do them.
anywho, constructive criticism will only help my game improve so i appreciate all i can get.
I would love for someone to record themselves playing against me, and post a video of it. I could use some critiquing of my style. Any volunteers?
Cr Fierce against Tatsus is my first choice. I never Lariat against them, but I sometimes use cr Jab if I want to recover faster and then tick SPD them when they land. I’ve never been hit out of cr Fierce by a Tatsu. But yeah, OJ is right, vs crossups, the Lariat is your best weapon.
I use close st Short into Super. This match of is a great example of this technique. Be aware that you can be reversal thrown on wakeup tho, since you have to be so close to the opponent for the st Short.
Coth records videos from time to time, you could ask him.
i generally do this against tatsu, i tried lariat, and i don’t know if it was me but sometimes the tatsu hits me out of it. i think cr fierce is just the safest option for that situation. ill have to take the lariat on crossup in consideration, i generally just try to block them.
keeping this on topic, me being an idiot headbutting into flashkicks. YEAH!

don’t think i have it recorded, but i never knew guile could air throw you out of a butt slam.
as for sanford v damdai. i fucking wish i had execution like that. though, ive been playing sf2 since hdremix came out, can’t worry too much, im quite new to the genre.
Skeelo, next time I get on HDR we should get a third person to fight. Me and you tend to have wonky lag, so if you know someone from the usuals that you don’t have bad lag with, we can get 3v3 going and I can just record you and them fighting.
K, sounds good Coth_X. I wish I had a decent video camera so I could record myself some nights. I’d love to post my videos on Youtube, and show the world some of the beatdowns I deliver to some poor souls
I enjoy watching DSP’s videos on Youtube. He’s pretty funny. I don’t know if I’m quite that funny, but my matches may be entertaining to watch, if you can stand all my swearing haha.

This might be why the new castle hdr matches (a small tourney including damdai, wong, n thelo) haven’t been uploaded but just in case it’s not send seb a message requesting them!
thank you for posting the same exact thing in multiple threads.
and im the one with red rep LOL.
These are ST videos (blasphemy!) but they are so high level I had to link them here: http://www.youtube.com/user/supersf2turbo
This guy is upping an insane amount of japanese tourney footage. A lot of the strategies you see here can usually be applied in HDR, taking into account your main’s new strengths or weaknesses.
Thanks for that studtrooper. *Damn *that’s a lot of videos.
New EVO 2009 videos (21-32):
Thanks for doing that sir. You are excellent. :china:
All the HDR matches are there except for Lord BBH (Dictator) vs. Alex Valle (Ryu). Do you not have that one? :clapdos:
Edit: Youtube’d them and found it:
