Having a hard time adapting to a stick

Don’t know if this is really the place to ask but I recently decided I would put down my other games and try to get serious about street fighter. My friend gave me a brand new stick to get me started and the first thing i noticed was the gate was square… and it is almost impossible for me to play anything but charge characters… i don’t know why but i have an incredibly difficult time doing even hadoukens (and non-sf4 dp’s) is there anyway i can 1) change it to a circular gate (or anything else really…) or am i just doing it wrong? I have a hard time believing i just suck because I put a lot of time into games that i play (WCG For starcraft and so on) I just think i may be doing it wrong and some of you might be able to help :frowning:

a lot of peoplea re going to talk shit because this question gets asked all the time.
just practice. it takes more than 1 day to be consistent. expect months.

That’s the thing… ive been playing nonstop for the last few weeks just trying to get the motions down and stuff but it seems like the square gate is just throwing me off. Ill rephrase my post then, Is there any other sort of gate that I could get instead of this box?? I seem to play exponentially better with characters like guile, boxer, but I play exponentially better with shotos and such with a pad or even on an xbox 360 controller.

Going through the same thing, guy. Trust me. I play so much better on a pad, and everytime I get crushed I want to run back to it.

Just stick with it. It’s like starting out all over again, but the results are well worth it.

Keep practicing. This shit comes up every couple weeks and that’s the only thing that will fix it is practice.

so i assume there are nothing but square gates?? i really think a more circular gate would help… but i guess i could just keep on practicing with the square one and just deal with it

There are octagon gates out there, but you would need to spend money and modify your current stick or buy a brand new one. The cheapest thing for you to do would be to stick with what you have. When you are trying to perform a hadouken just keep in mind your directions. Dont get the stick stuck in corners and just try to practice doing smooth rounded motions. This is what training mode is for :karate:

i don’t recommend octagon or circular gates and i went through this same exact thing 4 years ago. you will just encounter other problems if you switch gates. the best thing for you to do is stick with the one you have now and you will slowly adapt and learn to take advantage of the square gate.

I don’t recommend octo gates neither.
Either keep practicing with the square gate or simply get an American stick with an IL Euro stick/old Happ comp.

if you are too old you will never be able to adapt to using stick. fact.

I’ve never used a stick until SFIV came out and I got my madcatz SE. Trust me it’s frustrating at first but practice. That’s all there is to it. Stick to the standards like square gates, sanwa buttons because a lot of people have TE sticks now so if someone’s nice enough to let you use it, you’ll adapt easily.

Keep racking up hours in training mode doing motions over and over. I still want to go back to pad sometimes after getting beat up in Melty.

Ya, its just takes lots of practice, don’t worry it will pay off.

RE: Square gates. Try not to ‘ride the gate’ - aka push the stick shaft all the way to the edge - especially for QC/HC motions. The more you play on Jp parts, the more you should realize that you can input your motions with minimal movement.

Also, try experimenting with your grip - very few players will hold their stick one way for every single motion, and generally a loose hold is best for shifting your hand around.

change the gates to a octagonal/circle version depending on what stick you have.

i personally hate square gates and have changed all my sticks to either an octagonal or circle gate.

Yeah all the top players play Starcraft thast why there so good on a stick Daigo comes to mind he does not even play SF4 or PRACTICE it just Strarcraft but thats why he’s soooo good. Cause of Starcraft it all makes sense glad this thread came up again.

If all else fails remember just start another "I’m a retard"Thread.

and here we go the expected “i don’t even beat my friends from school” moron. Trolls are so 3 years ago.

thanks everyone else I’m just going to stick with the square gate and i think my problem is i push it all the way to the edge and as someone else said, probably shouldn’t do that.

So is starting your own thread to ask a question that has been answered several hundred times. Look I have never uttered a word about hate on the 09ers cuz I am fairly new myself but come on brah Wiz even included a google search feature so you could research issues just like this. I’m very glad to hear you are getting into the sticks so just keep at it or better yet go hang at the arcade for a while and watch some of the vets there and try challenging a few, you’d be suprised how much your game will improve over a few months

“Practice more” x N.

yea, every few weeks i go down to san jose state and play, ive played a bunch vs ricky ortiz and some of the other good players that hang out there sometimes… the thing is they have a circular gate there. I did search on google about a circular gate, first few things that came up said there was no such thing, some said there was, others said you needed a certain setup to get a circular gate, figured id give it a try.

As for an “09’er” I’ve been playing street fighter in arcades for years… since i was a little munchkin… but the arcade i’ve always gone to has a circular gate, and generally the only reason i come on this site is to find some new videos to check out and such, never had a need to post until now.
