capcom has no glory anymore. oh well.
I wish.
Capcom knows everything. They know about Evo, they know about SBO, they know about SRK, everything. Seth works for Capcom, Sirlin works with Capcom, Ray Jimenez from Capcom got interviewed by Bunkei, the guys at the BBS talk about fighting games all the time, and they are a company for gods sake. Of course they do their research.
Now, the Marvel license is probably costing a lot right now. And I mean a lot!
From a casual gamers perspective, 3S and ST are pieces of junk when compared to Resident Evil or whatever. There are characters from 1P games that have more moves than the ones at that game. SF games are very limited in what you can do from the start, and the boring ugly moves are hard to perform for the average gamer.
From a hardcore gamers perspective, every little tweak they do will make so many people hate the game is not even funny. When they change the smallest ST hitbox, everybody go crazy in hate. Imagine doing a SF4. Any change will be hated by the old schoolers, and the only way to make the game halfway decent for casuals is to add a lot of stuff. Maybe not but Capcom would have to make a bet here, a bet that they already lost with CFJ, when they tried to go simple and STish or whatever.
I admire how Sirlin, Ray Jimenez, Seth Killian and a bunch of people in or close to Capcom like to throw bones to the fighting game scene. However, in my honest opinion, making SF4 or MvC3 would be to throw a lot of money into the trash.
And Arcana Heart may be all fine and dandy for hardcore gamers, anime fans and pedophiles, but make no mistake. AH and its friends are no Resident Evil.
I wish I could believe in a thriving scene with lots of new and really popular games, but I dont. We can either have our niche scene with 3S, MvC2 and niche GG-like games, or simply give up. It makes me sad but thats how I see it.
If only you had any idea how wrong you were about this. Fighting games are so niche, that even a huge one in the states (which is still small in Japan and elsewhere) wouldn’t make the slightest impact on Capcom’s sales, when they have “modern and next gen” games selling in the millions right now. They’d dump millions of dollars into making MvC3, and all of the hardcore players would buy it immediately… and they’d still probably barely break even. Financially speaking, MvC2 was a flop, and so was 3S if I recall correctly. Just because a lot of people play it in “our world” doesn’t mean it can compete with the sales of the braindead masses buying Dead Rising because it’s got zombies in it. The only reason Capcom’s taking a chance with Sengoku Basara X is because it’s got a huge fanbase in Japan. The fanbase on the game will be pulling in a lot of non-fighting game fans… which is the only way to market fighting games, now.
As a sales demographic, we are completely dead.
How was MvC2 a flop? Every copy that was made was sold.
Because they didn’t make very many copies, despite the fact they sold them all.
If the Marvel license costs so much, try DC. They’re probably going to be cheaper given their difficulties right now- they aren’t printing money, and it’s untapped. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Sinestro, or Green Arrow rip Chun a new one?
They could have made more MvC2 copies, they just weren’t allowed to at a reasonable price by Marvel.
What I think the future realistically is- is 3d fighters with online play- such as DOA if we’re unlucky, and VF/Tekken/SC if we are lucky. Those games still sell well, and the online play gives it enough legs for casuals who won’t go to tournies.
I think the dojin/anime stuff will survive in niche- but even SNK sees that they are going to have to go 3d at some point. I’m sure they don’t want to- but bankruptcy sucks.
If Marvel license cost so much, Capcom could make a Capcom vs Capcom. They own so many cool characters that it could result in a excellent game. The idea of Capcom Fighting All-Stars is excellent (the game weren’t).
Either CVS2 or MVC Style for Capcom vs Capcom (both styles would be nice) can satisfy some hunger for a new Fighting Game, without the risk of some OG/Purists roar about hitboxes, parry, new outfit/hair, Sirlin’s Castle in the background or whatever.
While playing to win, you must use everything you have in your hands, each instrument in the very diligent way. Capcom has its characters, besides a strong name and our fanatic loyalty (you bought CFJ, right? I did!), and EVO.
So, use all weapons is the way to go, instead of complaining that MVC2 numbers could be better (if they had produced more…), sit and cry will not help. Move to revive the FG scene, 4.6% of units sold for genre can turn to 8% very quickly. Oh yeah, I’m optimist.
Yup I agree with all that.
DC comics aren’t doing Marvel numbers sales wise but they are under the Time Warner umbrella and add into the weight of the Batman and Superman properties, a DC fighting game could be just as expensive if not more so.
As far as Capcom practices go, I honestly think they try different things and depending on what sticks, they might continue or they might drop it. Probably the best bet for another 2D fighting game would be if everyone and their momma bought Basara X. Other than that, who knows when Capcom will get an inclination to make another fighting game. With rising development costs along with the money need to promote, it really is a gamble to put out a game for a niche market that expects as much as we fighting game fans do.
Why the hell do you need a super hero license for a good fighting game anyway?
You don’t. It’s the hope that the license would help push sales.
If the goal is to push sales by using super heroes and famous stuff just go for the Famous People vs Capcom like: Beyonc vs Chunli, J-Lo vs Ryu or George Clooney vs Blanka
HELL YEAH!
put 2pac and biggie in mvc3 to add to the marvel wc vs ec drama.
Samuel L. Jackson is top tier.
yeah it is kinda cheap= =
$1000? it’s a pretty small amount for a big company like Capcom to give out
but it’s good at least they gave something~
They probably would’ve made a good amount of money if they went through with Sammy vs. Capcom, but rumor mill has it that they didn’t like what Sammy/ASW was going to do with their characters so the project was axed.
