Gyah Kita Ki (My demon brethren): The Firebrand teams and assists thread

Since Tatsu’s so useful, might I recommend Dr. Doom for a 3rd member?

Reasons why? Both Akuma and Firebrand benefit from missles handidly, Both DHC into Dark Fire fairly well. And Bon Voyage as a combo starter for either character works wonders: Dr Doom tag in if they aren’t in a corner and leads to a full Doom corner loop, or if you use air Bon Voyage instead. If they are dragged to the corner, Akuma is fast enough to tag in and combo from the spin if he enters from the corner. Dante is also acceptable in lieu of Doom. Infact, several characters can be fit in for Doom, but the scaling and the fact most OTGs use a groundbounce restrict combo potential. C.Viper would probably work well here, but I lack the skills to make her work, and Felicia too but I hate her on a personal level.

Obvious one is Viper, who can S after hard-tag on bon voyage. I used to run the two together, but I kept asking myself why I needed Firebrand at all. Viper is strong enough without him, and better off with other assists.

I haven’t had the chance to try it in matches yet but I’ve been playing with Firebrand/Frank/Haggar. Firebrand might be able to solve all of Haggar’s problems getting in because bon voyage puts the opponent in three positions they never want to be in: close to haggar, in the corner with haggar, and primed for a reset (hoodlum M) from haggar. When haggar tags in you can, with the right timing, buffer the motion just before they tech so that Haggar auto-corrects and catches them when they roll behind him (so the single input for hoodlum M catches back, forward, and neutral techs). I can’t see why you couldn’t do something similar with she-hulk etc.

Heh, I remember Chrisis talking about how Firebrand lacked good “panic buttons” or something similar. So the synergy could be bi-directional: FB gets a good invincible assist and a way to do damage, and Haggar gets in much more easily. A good 3rd character could be anybody with a delayed projectile (for Haggar’s approach and FB unblockables), or Dormammu (see Zak Bennett for FB/Dorm & Eddie Lee for Dorm/Haggar).

Yeah that’s the way I see it - they could compliment eachother very nicely, so long as this reset works as well in matches as it does in the training room.

Frank’s cart is a solid but not ideal assist for the both of them. He’s there because I like him, and because Haggar can level him up really easy. If he can’t pull his weight I might try learning RR for that godly spitfire assist, or pick up sentinel drones again.

This is an interesting team composition. I also run FB and Skrull, and up until recently I had Frank as my secondary character. However, I’ve been looking to replace him with someone a little more reliable. I wish I was better with Trish because I do like her as a character and she seems like she might be a good teammate to FB.

I’m currently considering Ammy or Dormammu to fill the third spot with one of the following setups:
FB (Missile M)/Skrull (Grudge)/Ammy (Cold Star)
or
FB (Spitfire)/Dorm (Dark Hole)/Skrull (Tenderizer)

Any other suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

hey guys, I’ve been messing around here or there with FB since ultimate came out and since I’m getting back into it now I want to run FB on one of my teams. I’ve been using him with dorm/akuma with some success, but I play a variety of characters (some very well, some just decent) so who do you think would work well with him considering assists/ability to set up unblockables, dhcs etc
Mains: Joe, Shuma, Doom, Wesker (not playing him much anymore though), Akuma
Others: Strider, Dormammu, X23, Thor, Captain America, Frank

Of the characters you listed…

Highly recommended:
Doom is always a great teammate for everyone, and FB will benefit from either Beam or Missiles.
Akuma has Tatsu, which is phenomenal for any rushdown character, especially Firebrand.
Frank with Shopping Cart functions very similar to Tatsu, plus FB is pretty good at getting Frank leveled up.
Dormammu’s Dark Hole is an OK assist for FB, plus Stalking Flare is nice for unblockable setups.

Less recommended:
X-23 is VERY similar to Firebrand except with a more ground-focused game, so putting them on a team together seems redundant.
Thor and Firebrand don’t really seem to have much synergy between each other, so they aren’t really ideal teammates.
Cap could work, I guess, but again, I don’t really think he and Firebrand offer that much to each other.

Everyone else is OK but probably dependent on your playstyle.
Just my 2 cents.

Vajara is a godly assist for FB (hell, for anyone), and I agree with the rest of what the poster above said. I’d try pairing those two up with Doom, probably.

I think Cap would work well. Im trying to build a new team around them. Shield Slash is a unique projectile that probably sets up nasty resets. If you do firebrands assist OTG fireball and you throw a meaty jumping shield slash when they come in it gives you a good mixup opportunity. They DHC great together. They just need a good anchor. Im thinking Doom missiles?
But Cap as the Anchor would be no bueno

What do you think about Firebrand/Taskmaster/Amaterasu? I’m still searching for a good third person to go with Firebrand/Amaterasu… will Taskmaster work? And what assist should he have?

Or maybe Akuma would work better?

A lockdown + a horizontal projectile works great for FB (Hell, for most characters), and Ammy is probably the best of the former and Taskmaster one of the strongest of the latter.

Akuma would be better for combo extension (and breaking projectiles of course), but when I use Firebrand the weak damage and hit-stun decay mean that I’m not trying to squeeze out the longest combos possible. You’re more interested in getting in, staying in, and setting up mixups.

That makes sense. I assume H. shot would be better than V. shot then? The benefits of H. shot are pretty obvious, but V. shot covers more space and gets people out of the air (especially super jump height, which is always annoying). It’ll also make for a much more damaging THC if it comes down to that.

Not saying that V. shot is better, but just exploring the possibilities. What do you think?

I’m really not sure why no one is mentioning Vergil as a teammate…first of all, Vergil rapidslash assist is really good for him, it makes grounded Bon Voyage safe and allows some incoming mixups…but Vergil himself allows for a number of unblockables with Firebrand.

The obvious one is to have Vergil alive and THC against a blocking opponent, x factor cancel into unblockable…

The less obvious one is to KILL an opponent with Firebrand/Vergil THC, then the moment Firebrand recovers from his hyper, start the unblockable. Because of how Vergil’s super takes longer to finish, it always gives the PERFECT timing for Firebrand’s unblockables on an incoming char, though this setup needs to be done in the corner. Basically if you’ve killed the second character with THC and you have x factor available, you can autokill his third (unless it’s sentinel). I think this was discovered by SpinKing and used heavily in Japan, I haven’t seen any mention of it in any of these threads.

If you already have Ammy on the team, then I’d say Horizontal is a significantly better choice.

I saw someone do this on your YouTube (it might have been SpinKing but I’m not positive) and thought “Damn, that was pretty slick.” Okami Shuffle also works, just with more specialized timing, and I’m sure there are others, too. Vergil’s is probably the best one for the job, though.
The main problem with it is that it takes 2 meters to pull off. A majority of the time, that meter would be better used for Luminous Body or (more likely) DHCing to Vergil.
Still, it IS a neat trick. Totally worth doing if your opponent only has one character left, but probably less useful against a whole team.

Anyway for the second unblockable I mentioned, here is a video illustrating it:

At 1:55, Firebrand kills West with a THC, and this always sets up a perfect timing for Firebrand to do the unblockable while Vergil is still recovering from his hyper…Rocket Raccoon gets tagged with the unblockable while coming in.

I agree. Horizontal shot offers more utility, vertical shot is more niche and would probably only find much use in the corner, as an anti-air (Firebrand’s s.M and s.H are surprisingly good anti-air normals anyway), and for THCs.

Definitely makes sense. I’ll be using H. shot then, thanks!

Marvisto plays Firebrand/Task but he uses the Vertical shot and he makes it work really well as an unblockable. Call the assist, then charge, and the arrows should land, keeping them in stun before they can get away.

True, Task’s Vertical Shot can easily be used for Firebrand’s gameplan, but Marvisto also runs Arthur (daggers) to cover the horizontal.
However, Ammy’s Cold Star is a much more reliable (and IMO better) lockdown assist. So since Helvetica wanted to run a FB/Task/Ammy team, it makes a lot more sense to use Horizontal Shot instead.
