This was nuts. Best I ever did was a no-loss playthrough(that I still have the save of on my SNES) but re-playing Super Punch-Out!! Recently to see if I could still hang, I only ended up making it about 1/2 way through the second Circuit before getting GGPO’d.
The sheer knowledge and execution these guys are displaying is nuts. The dude didn’t even expect to get as far as he did in Super Punch-Out!!
Super Punchout is as repetitive as it can get for a trial & error game. The only unscripted actions are from Mad Clown’s juggling act and Nick Bruiser’s first 28 seconds and his block breaking barrage. Not trying to be that guy to rain on your parade but when it comes to Super Punchout I have extensive knowledge. Any other Punchout is very impressive.
It’s that repetitive. Every character in SPO can be (T)KO’d in under 30 seconds with trial & error. Blindfolded is a nice handicap. Might try it the next time I dust off the SNES.
Well there’s only 3 right? That I know of, I think there was an arcade one too that I tried once but never saw again.
I like the Wii one, but it’s also pattern based. At least for the first round usually, if you let them into the second round guys like SMM and Soda Popinski go nuts. The cool thing about the Wii one is there are a lot of KO opportunities with tight timing and restrictions that can look pretty cool too. I’ve never had the balls to star punch Bull out of his bull rush for the full KO though, instead I just gut punch and then star punch it.
The reactions of the dude in the back when he was up against the 3rd-last boss in the last circuit was hilarious. Dude was punching his enemy after teleports, blindfolded. The fuck?
Super Punch-Out!! Is amazingly well designed. It’s a game that will teach you openings and counters like no other, where your survival is based on whether or not you were able to adapt to enemy visual patterns(and sounds!) and react with offensive or defensive moves.
I agree SPO!! is pretty repetitive when you know the patterns. I used to time trial the game as well (remember that old SPO!! TT site setup by that French guy? Way back in the day.) That said, I think you are underestimating the importance of vision. I’ve tried to do similar blindfolded challenges in games I thought I had down to muscle memory and was… very surprised at how dependent I am on sight (an ‘eye opening’ experience, pardon the pun.) Being able to get the one hit KOs as the opponent recovers from the stun animation without seeing the screen is super impressive (as I recall the window is pretty small on those.)
Also I don’t think Nick Bruiser is random? I remember his patterns being the same regardless. Hoy Quarlow I think will have random attack patterns though.
And despite SPO!! being repetitive, it is still crazy fun.
