Their breakup was largely due to Premier wanting to branch out into other avenues like the Neptunes, Timbo, etc.
When he started working with Christina Aguilera, Guru started saying that Preem wasn’t hip hop anymore and he by himself was GangStarr. Guru even started touring with a different DJ under the name GangStarr without Preem’s consent.

…really…I hope there really is mroe to that story that the public doesn’t know…because I’m not trynna shit on Guru under these conditions, but thats kinda lame…

It’s a shame he’s gone though. I have spent a TON of time listening to Gangstarr. Love them to death.

Its not surprising. Anything you craft is very personal. A partnership stopping for a bit because somebody wanted to try other things sounds like the thing to create a grudge. Look at Metallica; bassist was kicked out because he started a side project.
Really sad to hear that his passing is mired by such drama; the most unnecessary time for it to start.
Can’t front though…That Christina album (I think it was the one in 05/06) had some dope ass beats…really good album as well.

guru kinda made the music industry his enemy over the last five years or so, but honestly, its probably solar threatening action at anybody with his name in their mouth. couldve been his motive all along. dude has always had a shady ass agenda.

Premier’s style of beats are kind of plain, don’t seem like they would fit well with R&B. Timabland on the other hand has some varied beats. Never heard of Solar until now but I remember Gangstar from the mid 90’s. Quit listening to them before the 90’s end.
