Guitar and Bassist thread

I don’t even have a board, I"m just running all these things with a daisy chain on the ground, it’s a pain whenever I have to pack it all up to take it somewhere.

I wish my hands worked like that, with guitar I’m using my right wrist and left hand fingers. With a stick I have to use my left wrist and right hand fingers so I’m still all uncoordinated.

I just really like seeing all my pedals organized and dc cable’d up to a power supply unit. lol. I dunno if this is true for everyone but for me I could actually feel when my hands started syncing up. initially I neglected working on my left hand and focused purely on my picking speed (Guthrie, Petrucci, Paul Gilbert and Al di Meola are my heroes hahaha) but when I started doing the Trills of Death™ my left got a lot stronger and faster, especially my ring and pinky fingers. it’s basically just a group of 4 notes chromatically doing trills, only hammer-ons and pull-offs with each set. so if it’s 1234, first you would do trills with 1-2, then 1-3, 1-4, 2-3, 2-4, then everyone’s favorite, 3-4 which is ring finger and pinky. each rep for 1 minute straight and stop only if your hand starts hurting. it’s hell but you can feel your left hand start to get stronger. like I was doing scales one day and all of a sudden I could feel my right hand WAITING for my fretting hand first so as to keep in sync. it’s fucking amazing.

Frustrated? Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…

I’ve been playing for about 21 years now. I need to upload some better videos of my playing sound wise though.

Haha I meant on the stick end :p. I do still need soem more practice on the coordination on guitar but I’m much further along in that regard than with a stick… I actually do the trill thing, it’s not my pinky but my ring finger that still gives me a little trouble going fast.

thats very similar to what I do. I’m naturally right handed so I feel that my picking hand needs far less practice than my fretting hand, so I do the following exercises with my left hand until I can land each note perfectly, then I sync both hands.

Another good budget option is guitarfetish.com, and they just released their bass line last week.

I’ve never heard of guitarfetish. Will check out. I’m always on the lookout for cheap shit that’s actually made well.

GFS pickups are a common recommendation for cheap but quality upgrades, and all their guitars come with them.

Learn to tap and your notes per second will sky rocket.

That’s interesting. Usually my only real gripe with little-known budget guitar companies is the quality of their pickups/wiring. I’ve bought very few guitars without instantly replacing the pickups.

I took a look at some of the GFS guitars. Their hollow bodies look damn good.

Or sweep picking.

everyone, list your top 15 or 20 favourite guitarists of all time, (only if you know a lot about guitar players). I’ll give you my list in a few minutes…

Eddie Van Halen and Frank Zappa are pretty much locked in for the top spots. Further down, it starts to get difficult.

Jimi’s obviously up there. You don’t have modern electric guitar playing without him. Same goes for Les Paul, Chuck Berry, and B.B. I love how you can listen to their music and envision the huge tree of influences that sprang up from what they did.

As far as my own development goes, Randy Rhoads, Tony Iommi, and the brothers Young (counting them as one) are all very important.

That’s nine already. There are a million billion great guitarists fighting for that 10th spot in my brain…

erch, why you make me chose?

Hmm this will be a very difficult list

Not sure if they are in a particular order or not:

1: Jeff Loomis
2. Dan Swano
3. Alex Skolnick
4. Mikael Akerfeldt
5. Tosin Abasi
6. Keith Merrow
7. Pat O’brien (he might not come off as bright in interviews, but he is a godlike guitarist, some of his pre Cannibal Corpse work is astonishing)
8. Chuck Shuldiner (somewhat obligatory)
9. Ihsahn
10. Joe Haley
11. Christopher Malmstrom
12. Klas Idlegerg
13. Emil Werstler (Really interesting style, does a lot of Gypsy Jazz style stuff and is the only death metal guitarist I know of that uses a hollow body)
14. Mike Amott (Some might not like him, but I do)
15. Devin Townsend (don’t know what he can’t do)
16. Paul Masivdal
17. Eric Peterson
18. Mille Petrozza
19. Misha Mansoor (hehe)
20. Steve Vai (guy proves that hard work does pay off, you don’t have to be Shawn Lane to reach inhuman levels of skill.

This list is so incomplete it pains me.

EDIT: List is a bit longer now and a bit more complete, could still go on but I think I got a lot of my favourites out of the way haha

Jeff loomis is sick.
Pat O’brien’s that guy who doesnt stop playing his guitar even during interviews, lol.
Jeff Loomis has said that Pat’s a a better guitarist than he is.

Even I’m struggling to pick less then 10… lets make it your top 20 favourite guitarists instead.

11 more to go. Okay.

  • Guys who can do anything: Steve Vai, Brian May
  • Guys who have the right lick/chord/note for any situation: David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson, Billy Gibbons
  • Guys with great melodic styles: John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson
  • Guys who are Stevie Ray Vaughan: Stevie Ray Vaughan

A list like this can never be complete.

EDIT: James Hetfield. Jeff Beck. 20.

this is the [i’ve lost count] time i’m posting my list because srk keeps messing up.

OK, for the obvious choices I’d pick Hendrix and Van Halen.

Then its:
3. BB King
4. Peter Green
5. Paco Lucia
6. John Mclaughlin
7. Rory Ghallager
8-9. Buckethead/gilbert
10. Carlos Santana
11. Jason Becker
12. Bireli Lagrene
13. Tommy Emmanuel
14. Robin Trower
15. Eric Clapton (Cream Era)
16. Garry More
17. Slash
18. Shawn Lane
19. Guthrie Govan
20. SRV

even this list is far from complete…

Don’t know. I tried to edit my post three times, and only the last one worked.

Got it to work after the 15th edit.
