Guile in Super Street Fighter IV (arcade version)

On a positive-ish note, this is an odd one that I’m sure others have noticed as well. Because SB builds virtually no meter, none of us are throwing EX booms outside of quick punishes and space gain. So now I end up with a super every match I play!

Less meter gain=?=more meter?! Werd

Other then that, Guile really isn’t wort the effort anymore outside of casual play. UDK only works against high level players that don’t random you out on wakeup, CH booms allow the opponent to go into combo video mode, FK seems to hit even less now (ignoring nerfed damage), U1 is useless due to lack of utility and U2 sucks due to lack of damage (U2 doesn’t hit a whiffed Claw U2 thanks to increased startup…WHAT!?!). Guiles 3rd special, airthrow, has gone from best in the game to worst in the game. This is important. Very important. Cammy’s airthrow is currenty better and Cammy neither needs an airthrow of do you ever see her use it. The damn list is endless.
The result is that even the bison match is now in his favor. Honda is still fucked by Guile :stuck_out_tongue:

To everyone that says “it isn’t that bad”, I really wish I had your competition. I’m not sure who you are playing but where I’m at, Guile is a small hurdle that one leaps over to get to the next dude in line.

Well no one who actually plays against top players is saying that. Di3 and Warahk both came here and straight up told us to quit playing him (if we want to win).

It just really sucks to basically have to throw away all that experience we gained with Guile from vanilla, and have to learn a new character that late in a game’s lifespan, just to be able to compete at high level. Not saying that this game is done after evo, but I can see it’s popularity drop a lot after SFxT launches.

I’m gonna keep playing Guile, but I’m not a top player, I don’t have the pressure to be top 3 or whatever. I really feel bad for dieminion, rebelo, everybody who put time and effort into this character, because playing Guile at high level is super hard work, and now playing guile basically means playing with a handicap. It not like he was easy mode in super neither.

What Wikum said above is basically what I been through and has caused me to no longer play properly most of the times I play and I got used to that. Which is not a good thing as it affected my play even if I used other characters. I play to irritate rather than to win nowadays.

Even so, imo the twins are not such a bad matchup for Guile if the player playing them is not a top player if you figure out the matchup. They are only unbeatable when used by really good players or those who know when and what to abuse. I still crush 90% of the twins I play. I only lose consistently against the top Yun and top Yang player where I play. Look at what I posted previously if you guys still have trouble with the twins. I had the benefit of playing them since AE was out months ago. I did warn y’all earlier but I’m not chuckling in the bottom of my heart cos I have felt the same as most of you did now.

Looking back, I never really played super consistently cos I don’t play on console, but imo super Guile was the most balanced version of Guile. If only they had buffed the rest of the cast in super… My best Guile play was back in Vanilla and now I can’t seem to play like I played in the past. The game has evolved but this evolution has actually worsened my development as a SF player.

I hope this doesn’t happen to the rest of the Guile players as I hope you guys can still find out and share new stuff about AE Guile’s matchups cos I believe the Guile community needs this more than any of the other characters since he’s nerfed to hell. Like what Dagger G and gilley discovered about using super punishes against them. Maybe someone can test this cos I have a feeling Guile can also punish a Yun divekick at waist level with lk.super.

shoutouts to Dieminion destroying at ECT3 right now

Edit: You beasting man, 2nd place representing our Guile

word.

Viper owns Guile’s soul.

still impressed he won any games

I neither play AE and nor do I want to, but major props to Dieminion.

He played the C.Viper match up as good as you can probably play it with AE Guile.

Edit: Ono-san has recently started trolling again about AE balance changes.

I think we need a thread like we had after vanilla, hopefully they read it and some of the more sensible changes get implemented.

what thread? sorry I only started playing 3 months into Super

From what I heard, Rebelo’s dropped Guile as well. Shine is still sticking with Guile though.

I don’t mind the meter nerf at all personally. It’s the overall damage nerf and the airthrow nerf that was unreasonable.

Received 2nd place @ ECT3. Have lost to Wolfkrone in the last 3 tourneys, and only to him.

His patience and footsies are incredible. Right now I don’t know what I should do to get better at the match-up, but I will figure it out soon.

I think you did a great job of being unpredictable, but I didnt notice neutral jumping to mix it up more - I have success using some nj hp and mk vs vipers, but they arent wolfkrone. How do others feel about using nj vs Viper?

You can’t get better at the match, you can only get better at Wolfkrone.

Attention: this post contains salt!

After a few more hours sunk into AE, I finally realised how screwed Guile actually is. I know it’s all been said in this forum, but damn, that’s way too many nerfs for one character. And they nerfed from all angles too: meter, damage, reliability and comeback. Individually, they aren’t that bad and you can potentially deal with them by working on other areas, but all together for one character? It’s just too much.

Anyways Congrats to Dieminion. Unfortunately I missed ECT3 coverage. Anyone got a link?

@ elipsen
I found Nj’s very useful in the viper MU - good way to avoid her ground pound (w/e that move is called) and if she burning kicks you can get a hard punch square in her jaw! Sorry, I shouldn’t really take pleasure in punching a women in the face…but this one’s an exception!

Ground Pound = Seismo

Good way to avoid her seismo, yes. But can’t she just do a seismo feint and a AA lp TK?

Ah thanks for the correction. You’re right she can feint into TK if you’re close, but when I replied I was actually thinking mid-screen nj.

Viper match feels so random I usually just guess, rely on normals and try to mix it up and be unpredictable + a lot of SHP and dashing to mess with HER ranges, since you really cant range her anyway.
