This thread has helped immensely in setting up my game recording rig. Thank you to all that have pitched in! Also, I’m looking for feedback on my current setup, mostly interested in the game audio and commentary volume mix:
Noob question: Are there any good capture devices under $100 that work for Mac? I don’t really care too much for HD recording at the moment, seeing as I don’t even own an HD television. However I would like to record my matches and matches involving the local players in some other fashion than having my MacBook propped up near the TV at an angle and capturing video with my webcam.
I was looking at the Dazzle recorder but I do not know if it has a good reputation.
Guys I need help. I have my PS3 connected to my PC using composite. I could see the video using Pinnacle, and it can record all fine.
What I want to do is, have the composite cables connected to my computer and my TV screen at the same time so I can play on my TV while I record using Pinnacle. What cables would I need to do this?
Great guide, but I’m curious as to why you have lag between input and your PC screen. I could give an alternative as to how to record:
Needed:
PS3/360 with composite (You will be playing and recording in SD format)
A capture card, any will do whether it be easycap or an internal PCI card
Debut Video Capture Software (Free to DL at http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/debutsetup.exe )
Debut is a handy little program that can record A/V from either your desktop, webcam, or capture device. It also has variable encoding functions to get the best out of the SD signal as it can. Also, FREE!
It’s pretty simple, plug in your PS3/360 to your cap card, install your drivers, fire up debut, then pic device. You can sort through the options to see what you’d like to be recorded.
Also, for the record and reasoning behind how I do this. I use my capture card to not only record, but to stream live.
Here’s a little video showing the video quality of the program.

The sound is lowered because I movie maker’d it, but debut can encode in .wmv, .avi, or .mp4 if needed.
what turns me away from this one is that my monitor does NOT have the component inputs i would need to record to my media pc while playing on a separate monitor.
current setup.
360(vga)–>Monitor
media pc—>Tv (the pc is not hooked up into anything related to my gaming. only has a hauppage mpeg2 encoder tv tuner)
setup i would like.
360–>capture device with vga passthrough–>monitor.
^I want to know if there’s a solution for that too. My monitor does have component inputs, but I don’t like the quality compared to VGA and I have a PS2/Wii that are normally hooked up to the component inputs so it would be a hassle plugging the cables in and out.
I was thinking of getting a female VGA to male component, then male component to VGA… but I doubt that it would work since the Hauppauge wouldn’t know how to read the video signal. Anyone have a solution? My brother just got a Hauppauge 1212 HD PVR. I’m probably just being nitpicky cause it’s fine as is since I’m not going to be recording all the time anyways. =p
edit: that was a stupid idea. what if I get a VGA splitter (1 input, 2 output) and have one output go to the monitor, the other, get a VGA to component and plug it into the HD PVR? would any video/sound quality be lost? It would probably look fine on the monitor, but what about on the recordings?
Thinking most in the terms of input lag, if any is caused by this device. Currently I got a Dazzle and connecting my PS3 with a split component cable to my TV and the Dazzle. Everything works like a charm capturing the game-sound and image but it feels somewhat like you get input lag so looking for a new soluton.
Beeing able to record in HD would be nice aswell so. Got np spending the $$$ for it either.
hey guys, so my current setup is: xbox 360 -> vga splitter -> one to mointor, other to vga to component converter -> component goes in hauppauge. this setup works, but I noticed a problem. It’s the same problem mr caesar had in the other page, the image shifts a bit to the right and cuts off the left side. It’s definitely the converter cause you can see it in the .
does this mean the converter box is faulty or all converter boxes are like this? hopefully it’s not too late to get a refund or exchange it. =/
360/PS3--->HDMI Switcher--->HDMI Splitter (4 outputs)
-->2 outputs to two 24" Lagless HD Monitors (for head to head matches)
-->1 ouput to HDFury which converts signal to component ----> hauppauge HD PVR (for HD recording)
-->1 output to a 50" Plasma (crowd)
That setup effectively gives me a head to head setup with HD recording capabilities (no matter what system, be it PS3, 360) and also another screen to output to the “crowd”
The recordings don’t have the image shift to the left as the HD Fury2 is downright the best device I’ve purchased in terms of digital to analog converters (should have bought this device from day one). It seems the HD Fury2 is the only device that has this capablity, looking at their site it states:
I have a question, I recently bought a Easycap USB adaptor but my “TV” for my PS3 is just an HD monitor so how do I get this to work with no composite/component ports?
What are the ports in the monitor? In the end, you will need to have a composite connection to your Easycap. To avoid lag during recording on the computer, try using a RCA audio to 35mm adapter plugged into your comp’s line-in port.
Thats not gonna work, seeing as your monitor is only HD, you’ll have to find HD recorders/converters. Other option is to find a TV with composite inputs. PS3 does not do dual video out.
I have a question for those of you that have been using the Hauppage HD PVR.
I went and picked one up today and so far it’s working nicely, except for a few things I’d like some help on.
I have this black bar on the *left *side of my screen on my recordings. nothing is cut off from the picture itself.
just like this but on the left side.
Anyone know how to get rid of this?
sidenote: there are no converters used on my setup.
360 component - hd pvr - component to tv.
Secondly, how are you guys getting the 720p HD option on youtube? I’m using Arogan’s method to capture using Graphedit Graphs and or rcTVCap to grab my records without all that extra software. Is there a resolution that I should setup on my xbox so that the PVR grabs it higher than 720x480?
edit: well, I decided that for now I’ll just record while playing on the computer monitor. The lag isn’t that bad, and I’m not recording fighting games so frankly I don’t even notice it. So now I have a 20min mpeg but I want to upload it on youtube so I need to cut it in two. I googled that I can use virtualdub to do this pretty easily, but when I tried to split it, the file went from 327MB to over 3GB AVI for HALF of the length of the original. So how do I split the file without making it unnecessarily huge?
