So, could I use something like this with the SD outs:
And use the HDMI to my TV simultaneously with my Xbox 360?

Unfortunately as far as I know there is no way to record direct feed while playing in HDMI unless your willing to shell out $600-$1000. Even if you did record HDMI you really wouldn’t be getting the best quality as when converted to a video format that’s viewable it will lose its quality and if you are gonna upload it to a website it will get even more compressed so really its not worth it. Your best option is to use RGB Component cables (Red,Green,Blue) this will give you HD quality not HDMI quality mind you but still very good. If you have a standard TV then RCA Composite cables work too (Yellow,Red,White).
I’m sure someone else could explain that a bit better but I’ve been running around a lot trying to figure out how to record direct feed and honestly the HAVA unit is really your best option in my opinion its was very easy to set up and the quality is great. You really can;t go wrong with it.
Ok I take back what I said about the hava platinum that thing is a pile. It worked fine for 2 days and then went all haywire. All my vids are choppy as hell and when I try to record it just freezes…awesome. I’ve tried everything I could think of to fix the problem. rebooting hava, rebooting the router, rebooting pc, unplugging everything and plugging back in, goat sacrifices, but nothing works. Tech support is pretty useless so I’m pretty much stuck with a new door stop.
I should have seen it coming when I notice the back cables on the hava were causing my tv screen to bleed colors. I had to tap down some of them to hold them in place to keep it from happening. It also doesn’t have a off switch, stupid thing probably over heated and it has to send information over a Ethernet/wifi so that probably one of its major problems. So really for recording games hava is no good I’d stay away from it.
I bought Happpauge HD PVR day 1 with it right now but I can already tell its way better then Hava. Directly connects to your PC, has a off switch, and the set up was even easier then HAVA. Also the quality is freaking amazing lets just hope it doesn’t break anytime soon on me.
Happauge HD PVR

I am using HAVA Platinum HD, so far its been flawless. You must have been unlucky with your unit. I recently uploaded whole bunch of videos to youtube. The only thing I don’t like about Hava is the audio input. They only support the analog stereo input, I have a home theatre setup with surround sound, don’t want to run crappy analog stereo for my system.
I am using Sony Vegas video editing software to edit and render my youtube vids. I am still experimenting with different settings.
Vegas is all you need in an editing program, imho.
My hava’s been fine so far. I know about the Happauge HD PVR, but not in detail. Would you mind explaining what kind of input it uses, what quality it records in etc. etc. I apologize that you had so much trouble with the HAVA, I’m not a Hava employee or anything but it hasn’t really caused me any problems. The Happauge seems like a better unit, unfortunately I didnt know much about it, and frankly, I wasn’t sure about it’s setup or capabilities.
If you can elaborate on the Happauge, heck, I might consider getting one myself!
I think it records in 1080? and has a pass through?
What I liked about the HAVA was it wireless, and had a pass-through, also it recorded on the PC hard drive so I had lots of storage space. I do hate the sound though also. But to record my Resistance 2 games and SFIV games it did the job just fine.
Thanks.
Im using blackmagic intensity pro, cineform with a 2 terabyte raid 0 for HD and SD capture. Its pretty damn good but…
THIS right here is the sh!t though if you want to go portable with it
Gotta sell a shit load of sixaxis PCB’s if I wanted to get the Blackmagic.
Blackmagic IS pretty good though, I just didnt have the PC or enough storage for it.
well in someways its kinda like a splitter box/amplifier were as it just loops the signal around without having to use couplers it has 3 component in and 3 component out as well as 2 audio out and 2 audio in. It also has s-video and composite ins on the front.
Basically all you do is plug your ps3/xbox into the component out row and then plug the component cables that came with the PVR into the component in and plug the other end into the tv and your done. After that just plug in the USB from the PVR into your PC and you got a perfect streaming video of course you gotta install the software. As for the quality you can have a look for yourself

Hauppauge with just changing the file name to .avi no converting needed.

Mmm… are we certain about this? My Xbox component cable (the one that came with the console, first batch) has a big “Component <-> Composite” selector, and it only outputs one way or the other… maybe I’m doing something wrong, or you guys using a third party cable? This solution would be great for recording matches in SD while playing in HD.
I’m considering buy a Hauppauge 1212, but won’t passing through it from my game system to my TV cause lag? It doesn’t seem worth buying if I’m going to have to deal with an input delay because of it.
The Hauppauge HD PVR has no lag at all so you can play your games fine. The only thing that lags is whats being displayed on your PC it lags behind by about 5 secs or so but that’s why you play your games looking at your TV and not your PC. I’ve been using Hauppauge for awhile now and its been working very well for me. I have had the recording program freeze a couple of times but I think that’s because I keep hitting the record and stop button to often to fast.
Cool, thanks a lot. I think I’m gonna order one tonight. I wish I could find one at a brick and mortar store though. I’m pretty much limited to Best Buy though and after searching their website, it doesn’t seem that they have it.
Well, after reading the whole thread, I actually went ant bought a Slingbox Solo for recording purposes. As it has probably been mentioned, it allows to stream any Component signal to any PC on your lan, at a maximum native res of 640x480. After that, I use an on-screen recorder to record the video to avi. Here’s a test on youtube.
I find the results pretty satisfying for youtube sharing.
Also a plus is the fact that if you host a tournament in a location with good internet connection, the slingbox allows you to send a live feed through the internet (too bad you need a propietary client)
I was wondering what your experience was with editing the video captured from a Hauppauge in Final Cut Pro. I imagine if I wanted to edit the video in FCP that it would take some time converting.
Does the Hauppauge record in other formats such as DV or HD?
Check out the quality test I performed with my Gamebridge. Watch it in HQ of course.

Read the info to see how I did it with a HDTV.
When you record a video with the Hauppauge HD PVR it will be a .M2TS file if you change the string at the end to .avi you don’t need to do any converting at all heres a example.
myvideo.M2TS
this is what the file will look like when you finish recording it . After this all you gotta do is just change the .M2TS to .AVI so it should look like
myvideo.avi
no converting programs are needed for this process however if you need to it be in another file format then yes you will need to convert it.
Question:
I own a Hauppauge HD PVR 1212. It works great however I would like to add commentary during the matches or at least have my videos have audience background comments/shit talking. Not really sure how to accomplish that. Any ideas?
had
Only thing I can think of is to have some outside mic record all the sounds, then just dub the audio over the video.
I don’t think this is possible, but if you could plug the mic into the LR audio on the box, maybe it could record the sound, assuming it accepts it at all.
I got a Hava Platinum HD as well but I’m having a problem exporting the movie in widescreen 16:9 in MPEG2 format in Sony Vegas 8. Every time I export the movie, it turns out to be a squished 4:3 image. This is an example of how it looks like when I export it from Sony Vegas 8:

It’s outputting at 4:3 with letterbox and if I uncheck the letterbox option I get a squished 4:3 image like this:

So what I’m getting at is how do i get my movies to come out full widescreen like yours:
What other video editing software do you use to cut your clips? I tried using FCP but it wont import the audio from a MPEG2 file. So right now I’m gonna try Premiere CS3.
