Reading War Child right now (about halfway through); between the actual story and the history lessons in Wagner’s Grendel universe, I really gotta hand it to him. I love how he’s transitioned the Grendel persona from an individual “affliction” to a civilization-level meme… a thoroughly thought provoking (and entertaining) study on human aggression.
indeed. war child blew my mind in several ways when I read it. I still think pellon cross got the short end of the stick though…
Are you reading this stuff for the first time? Let me know if you have any questions or need to know what to read next.
War Child is one of my favorites, too. The art’s so amazing. Minimal verbiage but it’s still an epic story thanks to the outstanding visuals.
I feel like I need a new copy of Devil’s Legacy. The TPB I have is like an old Comico first printing but the cover is all shot to hell.
For the unbelievers:
yeah dark horse released a newer tpb of devil’s legacy…not certain if it was of the recoloured re-issues though
Well, I’m pretty much going off of the way this Grendel torrent package was labeled. Right now, I’m rereading Four Devils, One Hell (another amazing arc btw, love, love, love Christiansen’s art), which was the first Grendel arc I ever read. After that is Devils Hammer, Devil in Our Midst, Devils and Deaths, Homecoming, Devils Choices, the Devil May Care, The Devils Apprentice, Black White & Red, Devil’s Child, Red White and Black, Devil’s Quest, and Grendel Cycle, in that order. By all means, PLEASE let me know if that shit is not in proper sequence cause this is my first time going through the material, I’d like to experience it correctly. Danke.
grendel cycle should not be read if you have not read the original 40 issue series (War Child is basically #41-50 of that series). Devil’s Quest should be read after 4 Devils 1 Hell and right before Batman/Grendel II. Devil’s Child should not be read before reading Devil by the Deed and Devil’s Legacy.
The Grendel Tales can be read in any order except that Devil’s Choices is the sequel to Devils and Deaths.
