I don’t buy that at all. On a purely practical level, Clark Kent enables Superman to find out about trouble more easily than just flying around all day, and on a more personal level, it enables him to have a personal connection with people that he couldn’t have otherwise. The timid demeanor of Clark Kent has nothing to do with him perceiving humanity as weak, and everything to do with the necessity of distancing Clark as far as possible from Superman. People don’t recognize him, not because of the glasses, but because Clark is a total milquetoast and Superman is a confident, heroic figure. That’s the disguise.
I suggest staying away from the mainstream Superman books, then. They’ve been crap ever since John Byrne turned him into a super-powered human in tights in the first place.
