Batman wore the ring for 10 seconds and the power was too overwhelming for him to handle due to his fear. So, yeah…
EDIT - Also, Batman isn’t honest. The ring only allows someone that lacks fear and is completely honest. Batman is FAR and away from honest and he still has fear in him.
It does make sense that Batman has more willpower than Superman. Batman is just a human fighting crime. His willpower is what got him this far in the game. The will to survive and all that philosophical jazz.
It can also be argued in general that, in order to even become a costumed crimefighter in the first place–particularly one as legendary as Superman or Batman–your base level of willpower has to be utterly extraordinary anyway. Superpowers or no, it takes a lot of chutzpah. Saying that one guy should have much higher willpower than another based on whether or not he has powers is kind of irrelevant.
I can’t see how superman has a stronger willpower than batman. Cause whenever superman is backed into a corner he fucking shits himself. anytime lois is in danger. anytime he loses his powers. He is never willing do what it takes to get the job done to save the world.
If any of batmans sidekicks are in danger he rationally thinks the situation out instead of going emotionally batshit crazy. I mean ever since jason todd, batman has made sure to be careful to give his sidekicks the tools they needed so he has full trust in them. So he doesn’t need to have a fucking panic attack like superman.
when either is backed into a corner…my moneys always on batman.
Ok, to the whole thing about Batman wearing the ring…If I remember correctly, its not that he has fear inside him that doesnt allow him to wear the ring, it was just the fact that he had to let go of the painful memory of his parents dying. Hal told him to “let go” and Batman couldn’t, or I guess he chose to not give it up, because that is one of his sources of strength… So I dont know. I never took it that Batman has fear in him, the comic just made it seem like wearing the ring would make him relinquish some of the character traits that make him, well, Batman…
Yeah, but the thing is, the baggage that comes with being a hero and the fact that everyone around him has super powers goes a long way in all of that. Why do you think he relies on contingency plans all of the time? When villains started finding out heroes identities in Identity Crisis, Batman just felt that pressure. I dunno, to me it’s a mixed bag for Batman’s case. He does have his moments where he flips out(finding out he got mindwiped by Zatanna).
Funny thing is, Hal tells Bats to “let go” and yet Sinestro pulled out his past on him(Hal never knowing what his dad’s final words were before crashing) and Hal did kinda shed a tear there.
he still does, i think he’s moved wayyy beyond avenging his parents death. Now its just defending the city. I mean sure he hasn’t 100% found the killer of his parents. But i think honestly he can’t be still holding that as his 1 true guiding light of why he’s still batman.
After Infinite Crisis DC now says that the murderer of his parents, Joe Chill was arrested long ago - the same day as the murder. They used this as the excuse to chill out Batman after IC. Why he even said “Thank you” to someone in JLA. :looney:
Course this seems likes something that will depend on the writer. Dini and Morrison are not writing him as… let’s say ‘driven’ as before but if you read Outsiders it doesn’t seem like he’s changed at all…
God, I fucking hate DC. This is not Superman. They don’t even know who he is anymore.
He can and he does. Every criminal Batman punishes, he does so because he associates what they do with what happened to his parents. Everything about his life stems from what happened to his parents. It’s the central ambiguity of his character: Superman fights for truth and justice, but Batman fights out of revenge. So is Batman’s quest noble?
It actually takes more willpower to choose to keep a painful memory than it does to let everything go for a power ring that requires firmware updates. Funny how that works.
Wrong. Superman is against killing, and he always tries his damnedest to avoid violence except as a final recourse. This in no way has to stop him from taking action when action must be taken. One trait that DC slowly began to ignore after the Crisis and has now all but disappeared is that, along with his amazing powers, Superman also has the wisdom to use them or not use them as he must. Standing around indecisively with his thumb up his ass does not compute.
It’s not just the fact that he won’t kill, but the fact that Superman will ALWAYS find a way to win. Even when there’s an impossible situation, Superman is supposed to be the guy who will solve the problem.
There was this one Grant Morrison interview where he was talking about his views on Superman and he mentioned that Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow? was so flawless in terms of plotting, but what bugged him was that Alan Moore made Superman cry in the story. Morrison said that Superman doesn’t cry.
And, y’know, I think Morrison was on acid when he gave that interview. So we have to believe him.
