Well, since it was such a high angle demon flip, the sweep would have barely moved me forward, and I would have had a way better chance at getting killed for it. The EX flip on wakeup is usually unexpected, so that’s confusion, the parry can’t be countered, so there’s only a small specific window where i’m vulnerable afterwards. It seems unlikely that he’d be able to consistently respond to that window, especially when I could mess with the timing by doing K instead (which i had been doing all match)
The jabs and s.lk are all uninterruptable on block (i am 95% sure), but after anything, c.mp can be shoryuken’d whether the jabs hit or were blocked. I’ve never been interrupted with a jab though, I think that’s not possible. I don’t know, but frame data should show this pretty clearly.
The way that block strings are interruptible happen for 2 reasons. One, block stun is bit lower in this game compared to other games. And two, characters need to perform links to do combos and hit-confirm.
For example, Ryu wants to do an easy hit confirm. cr. short, cr. jab, cr. jab. WIth the same timing on hit, this all combos. The same timing on block, the cr. jab linked to cr. jab can be reversaled. If you look at frame data, cr. jab gives +5 on hit and +2 on block. Cr. jab hits on 3rd frame. So the same timing on hit, gives Ryu a combo, but even if Ryu performed the link as early as possible, on block, he has a 1 frame window to be reversaled.
Unfortunately for Gouken, these cr. jab and cr. shorts don’t link thus they have to be chained. This means really that there is no window for reversal against our strings on block until you go for something that normally wouldn’t be a combo ie s. lk -> cr. strong.
Edit: If your S.Lk hits and you perform the cr. MP as early as possible, there is only a 2 frame window to be reversaled. Fastest jabs in the game hit on 3rd frame. On block, you have 5 frames to be reversaled. Problem is though that the s.lk range pushes bacl and cr. mp has such a good angle and hit box and range. It’s really an awesome poke.
Hey Siyko good video, I would definitely like to see more of them. I think you should do ones for Blanka, Bison, and possibly Balrog (although don’t have nearly as much problem with Rog as I do with Blanka and Bison) because I find these to be Goukens hardest match-ups. I’m sure he has other hard match-ups. Gouken is like anti Ryu/Ken/Sagat as far as I’m concerned. Those matches versus Ryu/Ken/Sagat are fun to play, but the strategies involved are pretty cookie cutter/self explanatory in comparison to some of the other Gouken matchups.
I totally disagree - versus blanka + balrog, it seems liek there’s just a bunch of “how do i deal with X” - which is really just maximizing risk/reward for me.
I love shoto fights because they’re so involved on both sides - the tools remain simple and blunt, which means we both have to use them in very creative ways and get into each others’ heads.
Also, thanks Saridan for the explanation behind gouken’s pokes, that fits well with my experience.
I agree with you totally. When I said that about cookie cutter I think I meant the same thing you’re saying with this: “the tools remain simple and blunt, which means we both have to use them in very creative ways and get into each others’ heads.”
That’s all I meant is that I’m so familiar with the tools each side has that I am able to do okay and devise my own plans/counters just fine with those match-ups. They really turn into a match of mind games, which are very fun to play (I love fighting Ryus/Kens/Sagats with Gouken). So I thought that a Bison/Blanka/Balrog annotated video would be very helpful, more so than a shoto match-up just because most of us can play those mind games just fine with other shotos, but for the other types of match-ups it turns into just not knowing where to even start when it comes to mind games.
I mean both types of matches simply boil down to mind games its just that everyone is so familiar with the shotos that they know how to manipulate, bait, and set up various things. When fighting unfamiliar combatants the game is also about mind games, if you can even get to the point where you know the other character’s techniques, strategies, and moves. I think annotated Blanka/Balrog/Bison videos would be a good starting point to show off how to even initiate these mind games against those types of characters.
I would really love some strats with shotos dat dont spam hadous and FADC to get spacing to cr. mk into hadou or crossups. And yea the video is wat the noob players and veterans would be glad to see, btw the maker of this thread should edit the first post and put all these videos in the first post.
Personally, I find that bad Blanka players are much harder to deal with than bad Shoto players because bad Blanka players are still difficult to punish for mistakes. However, if you play against a good shoto you will have a much harder time finding openings.
Siyko great job on the video man, those annotations are really helpful for someone like myself. Would love if you did more (and if other people did stuff like that too).
nice vid sikyo! i’m already getting compliments on day #1 gouken thanks to that.
i’d love to see more good players annotate what they were thinking at a given moment in their vids. really adds depth and entertainment value to the whole thing.
What do you use to record your matches Siyko? I dig the annotating, didn’t even think of that - that shitty youtube feature has a purpose! I would like to do the same for Fuerte vids but I don’t have a capturing device. You just have a camcorder?
