Gouken Moveset and Attributes

i tested it last night, but hitting with a fb puts your op in a juggle state. You can combo anythign you want after it as long as it reaches, so those up fb’s can be used to start a juggle.

IF you want to change this. cr.MP wont actually combo into gohadoukens from further out.

Here are the Ultras that Gouken can counter:

Sagat
Fei Long
Cammy
Ryu (cleanly within sweep range, otherwise you still will eat one hit)
Dhalsim (you seem to always take at least one hit)
Blanka (during any of the airborne portion, grounded part seems impossible)
Guile
Rufus
Dan

You can’t counter any of the rest of the cast because they all either have armor breaking properties or are throws.

You sure you can counter sagats, I was getting armor broken in training

Yeah, there are a few others though. These videos posted by hackadon in the other thread, show some of the setups.

You can break Sagat’s every time when it’s right up on you. I haven’t tried testing it from a distance though, but I’m not sure why you would want to counter it from a distance anyway since you could just punish hard if you blocked it on the way up. The chip damage you would take blocking it from a distance would most likely be less than what you would take from countering it.

*edit - I don’t know how you could possibly be getting armor broken unless you aren’t actually doing the reverse :dp: counter and are instead doing a focus attack. I just tried it both close and far to make sure and I countered it every time.

Talking about Ultras, not supers. I listed every Ultra he can counter. That second video shows supers being countered. It’s kind of strange though watching him counter Ken’s super when Ken’s Ultra is similar but breaks armor. I’m also not suggesting we shouldn’t also know what supers he can counter, it’s just that I would assume in most cases you will have to worry about an Ultra because they will be spending their meter on EX moves more often than not.

Oh I wasn’t trying to correct you, after the first video I just assumed the second one contained Ultras.

I’m really surprised that he can counter that many Ultras though … I really hope there won’t be a patch some time in the future. I want to start maining Gouken, his move set fits my play style real well.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew any other situations where his Ultra was a sure thing besides the back throw -> Ultra set up.

Look in the combos section

eyup.

I’m trying to main Gouken after playing a lot of Gouki and Cammy but I’m having real difficulty using counters effectively. I either counter and then get hit or I counter high and get hit low (or vice versa).

Should I be trying to counter after a block, anticipating that there’ll be another hit coming? At what point during a special is it a good idea to throw a counter? Should I just practice more and learn what each character is likely to throw at me, or am I missing a trick here?

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can set it it, like c.lp x2, then counter if they are mashing. Best version is EX cause no guessing needed. High counter beats supers and special moves and jump ins. I usually try not to counter alot cause thats asking to get grabbed or delayed hit into combo. They are awesome, but don’t be predictable.

Awesome. Another quick question…

After a Hyakki Gojin I notice I can do s.lp x4 or c.lp x4 or s.hp or c.hp and they all do the same damage. Is there any reason I would want to pick one of these over the others?

Sorry for the scrub questions, but I come here to learn

stick with hp and cancel into a combo. You cant combo chained light attacks with Gouken.

here’s the real list of supers/ultras Gouken can counter. When I mean counter, I mean mash the motion when you see the freeze screen.

gen super KKK -neither, it’s an air grab

That’s pretty much how I initially tried all of them and at point blank range. Ken and Chun Li’s Ultras were not counterable period with high, low or EX point blank or at a distance. Always breaks armor. At what point exactly should it be beating these two?

Maybe I’m having a brain fart but I can’t figure out what the HK could possibly be referring to in the EX HK naming convention.

Hurricane Kick?

lol yea you’re having a brain fart for sure! no offence!

Yeah, I’ve gotten so used to calling it tatsu, I forgot what HK stood for…

For Ken, Chun, Sagat, Dan you have to have input the command before they do their super. You should see your special move starting up on the super freeze screen. It kind of defeats the purpose of “reacting” to their super freeze screen, but it is possible to counter them.

That makes more sense. I thought you were actually listing Ultras and Supers that were counterable with the actual counter move alone, not just another attack that snuffs it. When you kept putting HK down, the only thing I could think of was “heavy kick” because the Hurricane Kick isn’t the name of his actual counter move, which is what I was focused on. And yeah, I have stopped Ken’s Ultra with an EX tatsu…initially by mistake when trying an EX low counter
