Gouken Frustration Thread, Go ahead let it out!

Just beat the #3 ranked DJ on xbox live. We all know how hard DJ is vs Gouken

here’s the catch: I used cammy. I don’t even alt cammy and barely know shit.

I fucking hate this game. I’m 99% on changing mains now.

If you love options and potential, go with Akuma. If you want a thinking man’s character, try Sagat or Fei. If you want bullshit, try Cammy, Ken, Guy, Elf, Claw, Balrog, Cody, DeeJay, Yun, Yang, Rufus…lol.

This is more a cause of irritation, but I hate the Honda match-up. It’s no fun.

You throw fireballs to keep him out. Each one does 65 damage, and possibly you may be able to land a juggle - less chance of that as Capcom goes back and forth and ended up deleting the far-distance HP Palm. So you throw fireballs, hoping to keep him out. Against an equally skilled opponent, Honda will jump over a LP fireball, sooner or later. That’s at least 100 damage there alone, and he will probably combo that into hand-slaps - close to 200 damage (I don’t remember the damage Honda does), versus your 65 + possible juggle. Is this supposed to be the ideal range for Gouken, really? ***

I ignore the fireball-nonsense against some Honda players, altogether. If I get a knockdown, I can pin him down with a Flip Dive kick. That’s pretty much it.

Back in Vanilla, fireballs used to do decent damage, and the HP Palm did more damage and had better range. I appreciate all current Palms, but we should have gotten a better solution than omitting the HP Palm, even though in comparison the current Palms are more practical - but we always take half a step back after taking a small step forward, and that’s a real fucking big gripe I’ve gotten with the balancing since Vanilla.

The match-up is 6/5 to Honda’s favor, if you ask me. The killer is his Ultra 1 that goes through fireballs. Maybe it’s just in my mind, but I always look out for that when he acquires it, and it happens pretty soon, and usually twice in the same match to boot.

I can agree that it’s 5/ 5 in actuality, but hey…

I like to view Gouken as how he’s depicted in my fancy avatar, but in some match-ups he’s more like that in Climaxter’s avatar.

*** upon reading my own post, I guess the safe range is full-screen. But you won’t be able to land a juggle at that range, and, Honda can easily justjump forward and close the gap. So my claims remain :frowning: >:( >:( >:(

Lol the only thing I hate is the hur kick not hitting crouching opponent… If at least the ex version will hit any crouching opponent that will improve his game since he can fadc to safety

the dash travels so short, I wouldn’t be surprised if we still got hit by something like Honda’s EX headbutt. It seems to be in Gouken’s nature to always fall short.

You know what’s really the icing on the cake with the Tatsu? The cl. or cr. HP knock some characters so far away, and causes them to do a realistic lean backwards in pain (even though you hit them on the torso and not the head), resulting in the MK or HK Tatsus (maybe even LK and EX too on some… I forget) to whiff, as soon as their age-long start-up have finished. That’s three factors, jollyly coming together to prevent a basic combo from working. *

Gouken was about slow moves, but high damage. However, he always requires one EX to do proper damage. His physique is bigger than Akuma’s (including the hurt-box), and he has a lot less tools than Akuma, but without EX Akuma does the most damage. With EX, you still can’t connect the one move that would be primarily used for precisely the EX juggle on half of the cast.

Cl. HP is 8 long frames of start-up, so the damage should be higher than the standard 100. Cr. HP was a good anti-air, but no better than Akuma’s cr. HP (admittedly for slightly different usage), and that even got a damage nerf, because we obtained something good.

I’m really coming off as depressing, but that’s the truth, in my opinion. I’m really not satisfied with the final design, at, aaaaaaaaaaaaall.

And I wish the motherfuckers at Capcom would speak some English!

What would make tatsu good, imo:

Make hk.tatsu 11 frames, give it the same lock that ex has, make the back foot connect like ex, but don’t send them back there from the first hit. Waist up invincible and throw invincible while on ground.

Remove mk.tatsu. Move lk.tatsu to medium kick, make it 9 frames, give it the same lock that ex has, make the back foot connect like ex, but don’t send them back there from the first hit. Waist up invincible and throw invincible while on ground.

New lk.tatsu doesn’t leave the ground. 7 frames. Only swings the leg like the first hit of original lk.tatsu. Sets opponent up for juggle. Waist up invincible while on ground.

All versions hit all crouchers if at point blank range.

That’s my dream tatsu.

Actually… just like other specials gain armor breaker as a reversal, kongo should gain super armor as reversal.

Why does Gouken seem to have shit recovery on everything he does? He also seems to stay in block stun forever too.

I really wish the Palms were faster and were safe on block. In many match-ups, you have to be careful of using the fireballs. Then you have pretty much nothing, ain’t that right? Once somebody breaks past Ryu’s fireballs, he has the Shoryuken.

That bothers me too, but I was more peeved about the fact that Gouken can’t whiff much of anything and still be safe. The shotos can whiff their tatsu’s (or have them cross up!) and still be able to attack immediately. Even on block they can throw before the animation ends! And don’t get me started on Akuma’s Demon Palm whiff shenanigans! While I’m happy that Gouken got some tangible improvements, he still has to take massive risks that rarely pay off and sometimes it’s annoying to see how easy some characters have it.

If was was like Rose’s Soul Spiral, damn we would palm all day!

This is more of a SF general frustration comment, but I am at a plateau right now after some good growth in skill so instead of continuing to work on the things that were improving my game, I am reverting to old crutches to scrub out wins…like running away and blasting plasma until the screen burns up. Even as I’m doing it I’m saying to myself “cut this lame shit out!”

I’m not mega annoyed but just an overall sense of “Oh Dear”

I had a long stretch of matches against one of the best Akumas here in the UK.
I’d roughly estimate it came out about 18:6 in his favour.

So this rant will consist of:
Akuma! maaaannn why does nothing of his have recovery? Thats not to say I can’t block his shenanigans when he DF Palms behind and begins a combo or what not. I can it’s just then your left with no option than to block, block, block some more. Everything he does is to get you into his Vortex. If he hits you with anything, it’s likely linkable into a lk.Tatsu > Sweep > Vortex!

And his Vortex!, Mutha’ Trucka’!
It’s a fact, he IS going to knock you down at some point. then you have to guess block or jump. That’s ALL!
The amount of throws and Palms I took in a row for guessing wrongly, I mean this guy hardly ever mistimed. I got a lk.Tatsu off maybe 3 times when he late palmed.

Actually I think that’s it.

I’ll get to some specifics.

  • Akumas Sweep, obviously its one of his pokes of choice, it beats everything i can poke with, except maybe fireballs from out of sweep range. But that sounds stupid =P
  • Akumas far.st.HK, I HATE this move, it gets him in, cant be focused, you can’t really parry it (I did once, and felt epic for a couple of seconds) because you dont know when he’ll do it, he could sweep instead.

It’s just an overall sense of ‘I’ll never be able to consistently win against him’.
I blame it on Gouken & Akuma. Maybe I’m kidding myself but I’m blaming it on Tier! =(

Toof, you have a tough ass Gouken. Don’t doubt your own skills. I’ve come to accept that no matter how good I get, there are other characters that just simply have better “flowcharts”. You won a third of the matches and I bet he’s saying…damn, I haven’t had a Gouken give me such a hard time since I started really learning Akuma.

This is how I see the creation of Gouken as a playable character by Capcom. Yes, it is obvious that Capcom planned from the start for Gouken to be lower, I guess you could say in potential, than RyuKenKumaGat. I can understand the theory…he was the master of the Ken and Ryu and the goal of good teachers is to have their students surpass them…Akuma killed Gouken so that says all it needs to about the match up…Sagat leveled his sights on Ryu who has, as said before, already surpassed his teacher. Looking at Ryu’s design, he presumably took what he thought Gouken did poorly and made it viable (I’m looking at you, tatsu and shoryuken). It just makes sense to have Gouken struggle in this game. If he came out beasting and S tier, Street Fighter lore wouldn’t make much sense to me.

Now, what Capcom needs to do whenever they go to the next game or version is make Gouken evolve. Explain it that he was only warming up in SF4 and he has finally fully spiritually re-awakened and worked on improving his techniques…and make his divekick/fireball/zone/kongo/grab game faster and more dangerous.

Capcom vs SNK 3. Takuma vs Gouken. Let’s go.

gouken is the flashiest mofo in sf4 hands down and everyone loves watching gouken play. sadly, he has some major faults with his bad matchups so i’d recommend you get just as good with a top tier character as a second when you go to tourneys. what a damn shame capcom :tdown:
